Leonard died and was buried at FStG on 7th January 1784. He was quickly followed by Ann his widow who was buried on 12th Sep 1784. Leonards death meant that Ann had no support and the Overseers of the Poor for Fordington in their accounts dated Sep 1784 refer to paying 7 shillings for her sickness & waking - an all night vigil for the deceased prior to burial - and 16 shillings and 8d for her burial

Entry 80 John BEAVIS resident in this parish & Sarah MATTHEWS of this place were married by banns 05-Oct-1780 by me Nathaniel Templeman both their marks witnesses John Bishop and George Lester

Note:- John BEAVIS (1757-1813) From the above it is clear he was already resident in Fordington in 1780. From surviving Land Tax returns we know that between 1806 and 1814 the family were living in Mill Street in Fordington in a House with a Garden owned by Robert Summers. Sarah BEAVIS nee MATTHEWS (d.1812) was buried at St Georges Church on 3rd September 1812 and her funeral must have been paid for by her husband as there is no evidence of support by the Overseers in Fordington. John BEAVIS however soon followed her being buried at FStG Church on 22nd July 1813 when his age was given as being 56. The Overseers of the Poor Accounts for Fordington (image 831 on ancestry.com) record in the Accounts for the period 4th to 30th July 1813 that they paid 14 shillings for John BEAVECS [BEAVIS's] Coffin; 8 shillings for a Shroud ; and 7 shillings and 6 pence for his funeral expenses. These typically would have included Laying him out, making his shroud, Beer for the widow's laying him out, pall-bearers, a black cloth for the coffin, ringing the church bell and paying the Sexton to dig his grave. Looking back through the accounts he was first in receipt of relief during the week commencing the 18th April 1813 (image 825) when he was given 5 shillings. Further down the account in the same week it's clear they had the doctor in to see to a number of sick individuals for which they paid the exorbitant amount of £20. A further 3 shillings relief was paid to John BEAVIS and it's clear from later accounts that this is the amount they were paying for him to be looked after. They continued to pay him 6 shillings a week relief during April and May and an additional 3 shillings a week for his care. By July I think it was clear that he was unlikely to recover and they paid a combined amount of 8 shillings a week until he died. Children from this marriage:-

[Note:- Jonathan FUDGE (1761- 1836) was the eldest of 13 children of Jonathan FUDGE & Mary LOCK who had married at FStG on 16-Apr 1759. His name appears upon the listing of men living in Fordington on 11th January 1796, who were between the ages of 18 & 45, and therefore eligible for selection to serve in the Militia. This is particularly useful as being aged 35 we can rule out several other relatives with the same name. The listing also confirms that like his father before him he was an agrcultural labourer, he was married (i.e. to Sarah Lock in 1787) and was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had no children. We can be sure of this because the number of children were listed against other entries on the form and any man with more than a wife and one child to support was excluded from the selection pool. This was common practice as destitute wives and children would fall upon the parish for support. He was buried at FStG on 27 Apr 1836 when his age was given at 80 Years which seems to have been an approximation as he was actually 75. Sarah FUDGE nee LOCK (1760-1825) the wife of Jonathan FUDGE pre-deceased him and was buried at FStG on 8th July 1825 aged 65 years.

William and Ann had a son John HARDEN Bap at FStG on 16 Aug 1789 but he died and was buried at FStG on 11th Oct 1789. Another son also named John Harden was buried on 8th Dec 1790 so was probably a still birth as there is no baptism for him. Ann died and was buried at FStG 16th July 1791. William HARDEN then remarried to Sarah TOOP at FStG on 21 Aug 1791. ]

Susanna LUCAS gave birth to a baseborn child she had baptised as Sarah LUCAS at St Georges Church in Fordington on 6th Jan 1805. The Overseers of the Poor Accounts for Fordington (image 657 on ancestry.com) for January 1805 record having paid for "Susannah LUCKES 'Laying In and a Midwife £1. 0s. 0d '-- ALSO (image 670) for the period 3rd Nov to 1st Dec 1805 " Paid Expenses in taking up and marrying of Jacob BEAVES £8. 16s. 0d.

At the Quarter Sessions held at Sherborne on 26th April 1808 (image 83 on ancestry.com ) an appeal was heard from Stanton St Gabriels Parish against an order for the removal of Susan the wife of Jacob BEVIS [BEAVIS] a private soldier in His Majestys Fifty Third Regiment of Foot and John their son aged about 7 months out of and from the Parish of Fordington to Stanton St Gabriel. The original order was quashed so the Overseers for Fordington became liable to support Susan and her child and recover costs from Jacob's Militia Pay. I have not located any military records relating to him but it is possible that for a time the Militia was at Bridport as Susannah gave birth to their 2nd son William at Whitchurch Canonicorum in 1810.

Land Tax returns for the years 1816 to 1826 inclusive survive which show that Jacob BEAVIS was occupying a House and Garden in Mill Street in Fordington owned by Thomas LISTER on which a tax of £3.10s pa. His bride Mary HINE (1789-) was the daughter of John & Judith HYNE and had been baptised at St Georges church in Fordington on 16th Aug 1789. The witness William LUKES was the 2nd husband of Elizabeth FUDGE nee NOTLEY wife of William FUDGE (1763- 1797) whom she had married at Winterborne Monkton on 23 May 1784. Children from this marriage were:-

    (1) Mary Ann Fudge (1809 - aft 1829) bap FStG 18th Mar 1809; Probably the Mary Ann Fudge that gave birth to an illegitimate daughter Emma Anne FUDGE who was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 22nd Mar 1829. Mary's abode was given as Pease Lane in Holy Trinity and it looks like she had been working there for some time and gained settlement in the parish but returned to her mother in Fordington to give birth (as was traditional for a first child) as a removal order was granted on 1st Nov 1828 from Fordington to Holy Trinity as she was then pregnant. The reputed father was David Davis a domestic servant of John Dansey Esq of Blandford and it would have been Holy Trinity's Overseers to pursue him for her lying in costs and support for the child.

    (2) Maria Fudge (1811 - ?) bap FStG 5th Apr 1811;She married at FStG on 6th February 1831 to Joseph STROUD

He joined the Police Force as a Constable in December 1838 but after 18 years service suffered a dislocated ankle whilst living at Hooley, Coulsdon in Surrey and was found unfit for service. The 1851 Census confirms that he was born in Fordington and was married to Elizabeth who in 1851 said she had been born in Eling Hampshire circa 1815. He was discharged on 9th June 1856 and entitled to a Pension of £28 pa which he intended to draw at Southampton. His Discharge record is available to view on Ancestry.com and confirms he was born in Dorset on 10th Aug 1817 the son of James and Mary Fudge. By 1861 He and his wife were back living in Dorchester running the 'Antelope Tap' in Princess St. Some time before the next census however they moved back to Hampshire living in Millbrook. Edward Fudge died on 29th May 1893 at Portland Cottage 39 Waterloo Road Freemantle Milbrook Hants.
