Unknown: possibly at St Peters Church (or All Saints) both in Dorchester where parish registers have not survived prior to 1653.

(1) Joseph Derby (1616? - Aft 1669? ) Educated at Magdalen Hall Oxford where he matriculated on 29th March 1639 aged 17; May have gone on to Inner Temple 1648; he married Joane COOKE at Thorncombe in Dorset on 1st January 1651/2 and raised a family of six children. He was elected town clerk of Dorchester on 12th Dec 1656. On the 10th May 1660 Charles II was proclaimed at Dorchester and the Mayor John Daniell made a short speech. He was followed by Joseph Derby still Town Clerk. David Underdown in his book about Dorchester 'Fire from Heaven' on page 231 states " He looked back over the 'world of confusions' from which they had just escaped, the strange and ...unheard of government's that had wasted our treasure and much precious blood in the nation'. He then proclaimed Charles II, adding a prayer that his throne might be 'established in righteousness'. There were loud cheers, and the gathering dispersed. Joseph appears to have been alive in 1669 as a conveyance survives at the National Archives (DD/X/WA/22) regarding his part interest in a copyhold tenement in Brockhampton in the parish of Buckland Abbas [now known as Buckland Newton] Dorset called Bewley Wood where his father William Derby with others had purchased the "fee simple" which presumably descended to him on the death of his father in 1649.

(2) Mary Derby (1617 - 1618) baptised at Holy Trinity church Dorchester on 30th Dec 1617 and buried there on 24th April 1618

(3) Elizabeth Derby (1620 - ? ) baptised at Holy Trinity Church on 28th June 1620

(4) Mary Derby (c1622? - ?) according to the 1634 Visitation of Hampshire she married John WHITE (1615-1659/60) the son of Rev. Josias White BD (c.1573 - 1622/3) the brother of Rev John WHITE (1575-1648) . On pages 391/392 of The Rev White's Biography by Rose Troup she states that " John WHITE, second son of Josias, a "merchant adventurer" in Dorchester, married before 1634, Mary, daughter of William DERBY, and removed to London. I have already speculated that Mary's marriage may in fact have been after 1634 as I think Rose Troup, not unreasonably, relied on the date of the Visitation. Regarding her husband Rose Troup refers to "He brought an action against Robert and John Whetcombe, the former having been a member of the Dorchester Company, for goods supplied while he was a merchant adventurer in Dorchester ". I have not located this case but it presumably confirms that they now live in London.

[Note:- William MELLEDGE (bur.1654) died in St Peters Parish Dorchester and was buried at the church on 04 Dec 1654. He left a Will dated 28th Nov 1654 which was proved by his widow, relict and executrix Elizabeth MELLEDGE on 14 Aug 1655. His widow Elizabeth was also buried at St Peters on 22nd May 1687 and also left a Will dated 16th May 1687 which was proved by her Son-in-law John BARTLETT on 21st June 1687. Children:-

(1) Sarah MELLEDGE (1639-1670) born circa 1630 : Sarah married to Richard CHENEY circa 1656 and was buried at St Peters on 30th Oct 1670. Elizabeth in her Will refers to her grandchildren by Richard CHENEY as William and Richard:-

(2) Richard Cheney born on 11th April he was baptised at St Peters Church on 14th Apr 1661

(2) Martha MELLEDGE (1632-aft1687) born circa 1632 : Martha married John BARTLETT at St Peters Church on 14th Feb 1655 just over 2 months after her father died. Follow link for more information.

(3) Mary MELLEDGE (1636-aft 1687) born circa 1636 : Mary married Unknown BROWNE before 1687

(4) Elizabeth MELLEDGE (1638-1694) born circa 1638 : Elizabeth remained a spinster and was the main beneficiary under her mothers Will in 1687. She was buried at St Peters Church on 9th April 1694. ]

[RICHARD CHURCHILL (abt 1602-1672) Note:-according to William Whiteway's Diary Richard Churchill married Edith Blatchford in Dorchester (probably St Peters) on 14th Sep 1630. Edith Blachford (c1613-1670/1) was the 8th child from the marriage of Richard Blatchford to Frances Combes of Ashmore c1597 whose pedigree and this union with Richard Churchill is recorded in the Visitation of London taken in 1633 (follow link to Edith for image). Richard was the third eldest son of John CHURCHILL (1568-1621) Esq by his wife Eleanor MELLER [MILLER](c1571-1641). Richard received a bequest from his mother in 1641 of £10. Also that year, described as a woollen draper of Dorchester, he was granted administration of the estate of John HARDY of Beaminster as he owed him money. He was elected Bailiff of Dorchester in 1662/3 and again in 1668/9 and Alderman on 13th Dec 1667. Edith was buried at St Peters on 10th March 1670/1 folowed by her husband Richard on 17th April 1672. Richard left a will in which his bequests were to their 4 surviving children Sarah, Richard, John and Willian Churchill.

(3) John Churchill (c1635-1695) His will is dated 17th Feb 1691/2 and was read to him again before witnesses on 14 Nov 1695 shortly before he died. He was buried at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 23 Dec 1695 and the will proved 8th Apr 1697.

[Note:-* 'Dorset Registers Marriages Volume 2 edited by WP Philimore & Edmund Nevill' confirms his name as 'Henry EDWARDS' but it is not very clear on Ancestry's image. His Christian name is the last word on the first line of their marriage entry after the word 'Married' but his Surname is written above the line, more or less in line with the year '1631'. Magdalen LAMBERT (1606-Aft 1633) was baptised on 13th Dec 1606 at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester the second of eight children of Robert LAMBERT, which makes her about 25 years old, the average age at which women married in Dorchester. They had a son Robert Edwards baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester ]

[Note:- Abbotsbury lies abt 10 miles ssw of Dorchester, it's nearest market town. There are no surviving marriages in Dorchester until the 19th century for a Richard Churchill (but see date 14th Sep 1630 above) there are however baptisms there in the 17c. Records are poor because of the civil war 1642-1651 only a few bishops transcripts for Fordington survive prior to 1664 for the period 1577 to 1639. Those for 1629, 1632, 1634, 1636 are also missing. No records survive for All Saints or St Peters only Holy Trinity covering this period so it is not possibly to trace a consistent line back through this time. There are 4 unaccounted for baptisms however, 2 in Fordington and 2 in Dorchester HT, which record children none of the four being the children of Richard & Edith marriage in 1630.

The year 1651 is significant for two reasons. First it marks the official end of the devastating Civil War in Britain which lasted from 1642 to 1651. With many Soldiers settling down or returning home to raise families 1650/1651 saw many marriages of which Adam SMITH's was perhaps typical. Secondly the most likely place they would have married was St Peters in Dorchester where the parish registers were all destroyed during the war, as were those for All Saints church further down High East Street. All we know for sure is that they did not marry in his parish of Holy Trinity (which lies only 4 buildings away from St Peters) on High West Street or St Georges Church in nearby Fordington where records still survive.

Adam SMITH (bur.1708) & Elizabeth SMITH nee Unknown (bur.1701) What we do know is that they raised a family of 5 children on Dorchester's High West Street as listed below. We also know that Elizabeth recorded in the burial register as the wife of Adam SMITH was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 2nd Oct 1701 followed by Adam on 17th Oct 1708. :-

(1) John SMITH (1652- ?) baptised at Holy Trinity Church on 11th Aug 1652, he later married Elizabeth LINDSFIELD at Winterborne St Martin in Dorset on 24th June 1685. Follow link for more information about his family

(2) Anne SMITH (1654-1655) baptised at St Peters Church on 14th March 1654/5 aged 9 days old and buried there 24th April 1655

(3) Stephen [Stephanus] SMITH (1656- aft 1717?) baptised St Peters Church 4th May 1656 aged 3 weeks. May be the Stephanus SMITH of Dorchester a Brazier by trade who is mentioned in the Dorset Quarter Sessions Records Plea Books at the quarter sessions held at Blandford 14th Jan 1717

(4) Adam SMITH (1657-1659) baptised at Holy Trinity Church on 14th February 1657/8 aged 3 weeks and buried St Peters Church Dorchester 2nd Jan 1659/60

(5) Elizabeth SMITH baptised at Holy Trinity Church 22nd Aug 1664.

William CHURCHILL (1628-1706) and Elizabeth nee AWNSHAM (1630-1714) After marriage William & Elizabeth lived in Dorchester where he traded as a bookseller and raised the family shown below:- [Link to transcription of his Monumental Inscription in St Peters Church Dorchester and original latin inscription by John Hutchins].William Churchill was buried at St Peters Church on 23 Jul 1706. His wife Elizabeth nee Awnsham the daughter of Nicholas Awnsham od Isleworth in Middlesex died 20th June 1714 aged 84.

(1) Elizabeth Churchill bap St Peters Church in Dorchester 15 May 1657, described as of Henbury

(2) Awnsham Churchill (1658-1728) of 'Henbury' was born 2nd May 1658 and bap St Peters Church in Dorchester on 9th same month. See Dict Nat Biography pages 307/8 remained a bachelor, bookseller in partnership with his brother John at the Black Swan London from 1665; Was stationer to the king and the leading bookseller of his day. He amassed a considerable fortune and was able to purchase in 1704 the Manor of Higher Henrbury, and that of West Riding in 1723; He was made a Freeman of Dorchester on 07 May 1704 and donated 10 guineas to the corporation. MP for Dorchester 1705-10. Died unmarried on 24th April 1728 and his brother John succeeded to his estate. Link to Biography History of Parliament Site. Left a long Will, described as being of Henbury (Manor) in the parish of Sturminster Marshall in Dorset with many bequests mainly to nephews and nieces and left his estates to his brother John

(3) Mary Churchill (1659-1713) born 21st Dec 1659 and bap St Peters Church in Dorchester 8th Jan 1659/60 and buried there 11 Aug 1713. A letter of administration was granted 02 Oct 1713 to her brother Awnsham Churchill, Elizabeth CHURCHILL, mother, renouncing

(4) William Churchill (1661-1737) born 10th Aug 1661 and bap St Peters Church in Dorchester 11th Aug 1661, bookseller, bookbinder and stationer to the crown;  he married Rose, the daughter of John Sayer of Woodbridge, Suffolk.-- later of Dalingho, Suffolk; left £100 in his brother Awnsham's will in 1728

(5) John Churchill born 22nd Apr and bap St Peters Church in Dorchester 19th May 1663 - of London Bookseller with his brother Awnsham see above - inherited his brother Awsham's estates at Henrbury 1728 etc. his wife Mary left an annuity by Awnsham.

(6) Joshua Churchill (1664-1720) bap St Peters Church in Dorchester 03 Mar 1664/5 described as of Gussage (All Saints) See will dated 22nd Dec 1720 (proved 27 Feb 1720 PROB 11/578) in which he asks to be buried at Sturminster Marshall if his brother Awnsham has provided a family vault there or at Gussage All Saints. He is in fact interred at Sturminster on 6th Jan 1720. He also leaves £50 each to brothers Awnsham and William and sisters Sarah Peach and Susannah Castle. £200 to his niece Susannah Castle and nephew John Peach £200; £20 each to all other nephews and nieces;To John Clark of of New Sarum Wilts and Joseph Damer of Dorchester £20 each; To Anne Hunt housekeeper £10; John Tibbs servant £10; To rest of my servants half a years wages extra; Rest to Nephew and Godson Joshua CHURCHILL now an infant; if he died to nephew Awnsham Churchill now an infant; if he dies to nephew William Churchill of St Margaret's Westminster; or if want of issue to my own right heirs; Brothers Awnsham and William with John Clarke and Joseph Damer appointed joint executors

(7) Jane Churchill (1666-aft 1728) bap St Peters Church in Dorchester 20 Oct 1666 - Described as being of St Martins Ludgate London she married Alexander Geeky of the parish of St Bridget London on 28 Nov 1689 at Saint Benedict Fink Church London (where her parents married) - bequests of £100 each to her six children in her brother Awnsham's will in 1728

(?) Sarah Churchill (c.1668- aft 1728) reference is on the memorial and brother Joshua Churchill's will of 1720 where referred to as his sister Sarah PEACH ?

(8) Susannah Churchill (1670-aft 1728) bap St Peters Church in Dorchester 11 Sep 1670 - She married Edward Castle on 24th Dec 1695 at Saint Benedict Fink Church London -- left £500 in her brother Awnsham's will in 1728 + an annuity with more bequest to her children

(9) Richard Churchill (1674-1675) bap St Peters Church in Dorchester 27 Sep 1674 - died in infancy being buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 23rd Sep 1675.

[Note:- As far as I can tell John and Deans married some time before the restoration but had settled in Dorchester All Saints Parish to live by August 1663. The absence of any children named after themselves probably indicates they had other children before coming to Dorchester which is reinforced by the death of Thomas their son buried at All Saints in 1664 as he would have been born before their arrival and before the birth of Sara in 1663.

John BARTLETT (bur.1678) was buried at All Saints on 8th May 1678 14 years after the birth of the last of these children. Deans BARTLETT (bur.1706/7) is recorded as a widow at her burial at All Saints on 19th Jan 1706/7. We known of the four children listed below. So far I have not located any further information about the fate of their 3 surviving children.

(1) Thomas BARTLET born prior to 1662, buried at All Saints Church Dorchester recorded as' Thomas the sonne of John BARTLET buried the 18 of September 1664'

(2) Sara BARLET baptised All Saints Church Dorchester 30th Aug 1663

(3) Parsival [Percival?] BARTLET bap All Saints 5th Nov 1664 recorded as 'Parsivall the sonn of John BARTLET & Deans his wife' (possible twins)

(4) Robert BARTLET bap All Saints 5th Nov 1664 recorded as 'Robert the sonn of John BARTLET & Deans his wife'

John TORRINGTON is the son of John & Barbara TORRINGTON and was baptised at St Georges Church in Fordington on 23rd March 1635. His wife Jane died and was buried at St Peters Church Dorchester on 05 Dec 1690. Children from this marriage were :- (1) Elizabeth bap Holy Trinity church Dorchester 29th June 1622 (2) Mary bap St Peters Dorchester (StP) 18th Aug 1664 (3) Barbary [i.e. Barbara] bap StP 10th Feb 1665/6 (4) John bap StP 25th June 1668 may have died and been buried at Holy Trinity church Dorchester as John TORRING on 29 Aug 1670 (5) Stephen bap 27 June 1670 (6) Edward bap 10th July 1673 (7) Samuel bap 22 Mar 1676/7

[Note:- I believe this to be the second marriage of William BARTLETT the Elder (c1609-1687/9) although I cannot locate the marriage itself. It seems likely that his first wife died circa 1651-1653 and his 2 children by her were both buried at All Saints Church in 1663. The following year we have 5 more children born to a William & Edith Bartlett between 1664-1675. Edeth BARTLETT (bur.1687) was buried at All Saints on 31st May 1687 and only 8 months later William was also buried at All Saints recorded as 'William BARTLETT ye Elder' on 29th Jan 1687/8  :-

(1) Robert BARTLETT (1664-1703) bap at All Saints Recorded as 'Robert the sonn of William BARTLET and Edeth his wife was baptised the 30th Oct 1664'. I have not located a suitable marriage but a child Mary the daughter of a Robert BARTLETT was baptised at All Saints Church on 9th Jan 1702/3 and Robert BARTLETT was buried at All Saints Church on 28th Dec 1703.

(2) Margaret BARTLETT (1667-1728) bap All Saints recorded as 'Margaret the daughter of William & Edeth ---- [Surname illegible but would be BARTLETT as middle child and no other Wm & Edeth] was baptised 3rd Nov 1667' - After an extensive search did not locate a burial and only one marriage which is for a 'Margaret Bartlett who married Francis BULY at Upwey on 20th Dec 1694'. Seems quite likely as just over 4 miles away; the average age for marriage at this time was about 26 which given her baptism in Nov 1663 is right on the average; There are no baptisms in Upwey for anybody with the surname Bartlett prior to 1727. Francis BULY and Margaret settled in Upwey and raised a family of 7 children between 1696 and 1709. Margret BULY was buried in Woollen at Upwey July 6th 1728

(3) Ann BARTLETT (bur.1668) no baptism found , may have died at or soon after Birth?, but buried at All Saints recorded as 'Ann the daughter of William BARTLETT buryed 23rd July 1668'

(4) William BARTLETT (1671-1741/2 ) bap All Saints recorded as 'William the sonn of William & Edeth BARTLET was baptised 11th June 1671' He married a Mary (Unknown Surname) circa 1709 and raised a family in All Saints Parish of at least 5 children. Follow link form more information

(5) Elizabeth BARTLETT (bur.1675) no baptism located but buried at All Saints Church recorded as 'Eliyabeth [Elizabeth] the daughter of William BARTLET was buried 16th May 1675 '

[Note:- Peter STANDISH was an victualler by trade and was buried at All Saints on 9th Dec 1680 - being pre decesed by his wife Margaret on 15th Oct 1673. He died intestate the court naming his sister Alice administrator of his estate and trustee of his surviving children Peter, James and Sarah STANDISH administration granted on 16th March 1681. Children :- (1) Sarah bap All Saints church Dorchester 3rd April 1666. (2) John bap All Saints 25 Mar 1668 & buried 24 Mar 1675/6 (3) Peter bap All Saints 30th Jan 1669/70, Married Sarah had at least 7 children before being buried at All Saints 17th March 1731/2 (4) James bap All Saints 1st July 1672]

Thomas BARTLETT the Elder (bur.1723) was buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 24th May 1723. Rebecca BARTLETT (bur1726/7) appears to have been buried at All Saints on 1st Jan 1726/7 recorded simply as "The wife of Thomas BARTLETT". Known Children from this marriage :-

(1) Christopher Bartlett (1671-1677) bap All Saints Church Dorchester on 1st Oct 1671 recorded as the son of Thomas & Rebecca Bartlett. and buried there on 29th Apr 1677 recorded as the son of Thomas Bartlett

(2) Thomas Bartlett Senior (1673-aft.1716) bap All Saints 9th Nov 1673 recorded as the son of Thomas & Rebecca Bartlett. Married Elizabeth KNIGHT at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 15th Jan 1714/5

(3) Rebecca Bartlett (1680-1687) bap All Saints 16th May 1680 and recorded there as the daughter of Thomas Bartlett. She was buried there recorded as 'Rebecka ye daughter of Thomas Bartlett was buried on 26th May 1687'

(4) John Bartlett (1683-1716) bap All Saints 3rd Jun 1683 recorded as the son of Thomas & Rebecca Bartlett. John married on 19th Oct 1712 at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester to Elizabeth CRIMBLE (bur.1716/7) Follow link for more information

(5) William Bartlett (1686/7- ) bap All Saints 20th Mar 1686/7 recorded as the son of Thomas & Rebecca Bartlett [Note:- Not so far located any other information ave age of marriage 27 = 1714 quite a few marriages in Dorset around this date but they either say from a different parish of make no comment on origin]

MARRIAGE:- "1674" - - The 25 of August was married Thomas POWNSIE of Dorchester & Jane THURMAN being in his parish

[NOTE:- John GLOVER (1653-1711) was the son of Henry GLOVER MA BD (1625-1668) by his wife Lucy and baptised at Saint Basil's church at Toller Fratrum in Dorset on 6th April 1653. His actual baptism record states "Anno Domini 1653: John the sonne of Henry GLOVER Minister of Winford Eagle baptized April 6^th ".The small church of St Lawrence at Wynford Eagle was at that date a chapelry of St Basils Church at Toller Fratrum and his father would probably then have been a curate as he went on to become Rector of Iwerne Courtney (alias Shroton) on 30th Aug 1660.

As an aside there is a nice entry in the Iwerne Courtney Parish Register (image 40 of 183 on Ancestry.com) recording Henry's induction to the church. This is actually quite useful as offical church records about him have generally not survived. He has also signed the parish register at the foot of each page until his own death is recorded there (image 42 of 183) on September 11th 1668 and burial at Toller Fratrum the following day.

Also there is an entry in the Municiple Records of Dorchester (page 607) which States " 1656, Apr 18 "It is ordered that there bee a Conference held with Mr. Glover, of Wynford, either by Mr. Savage or Mr. Whiteway or both of them, concerning his coming hither to bee a Lecturer, whether or no hee will be perswaded to remove to this Towne for 80li, per ann. and a house, or 9[0]/. and a house rather than fayle {fail}."

John GLOVER married about 1675 to a Susanna, but I have not been able to locate their marriage. They settled in St Peters Parish Dorchester where John Glover worked as an Attorney at law. His name also appears among the list of over 300 people in Dorchester who signed the Corporation's address to King Charles II dated 31st August 1681. They later moved to Holy Trinity Parish which had the same rector. John GLOVER died intestate being buried at Holy Trinity Church on 7th May 1711 with administration of his estate being passed to Lucy their daughter on 21st July 1711. His widow Susanna Glover was also buried at Holy Trinity, on 25th Oct 1716. Known Children:-

(1) Lucy Glover (1675-1713) bap at St Peters Church Dorchester 10th Mar 1675/6 (Note:- Surname wrongly entered in the parish register as Gloser). When her father died her mother renounced administration of his estate passing it to Lucy as their eldest daughter. She was later buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 25th Sep 1713.

(2) Susanna Glover (1677- ? ) (probably a twin with Margaret below) bap with Margaret at St Peters Church Dorchester 4th Dec 1677. No further trace, but there is another burial for a Margaret Glover buried at Upway on 24th March 1705 (Link to entry below). As they were most likely twins it makes me wonder whether there was some confusion which one was buried where.


(3) Margaret Glover (1677-1705/6) bap St Peters Church Dorchester 4th Dec 1677 buried at Holy Trinity Church on 22nd Jan 1705/6

(1) Rev. Henry CHURCHILL MA (1683- 1751) bap St Peters Church Dorchester on 14th Feb 1683/4 attended the 'Free School' in Dorchester in preparation for university and was admitted at Trinity College Oxford aged 18 on 24th March 1701/2; scholar 1704; BA 1705-6; MA 1709. Ordained a deacon at Wells Cathedral on 21st Sep 1707 and a priest at the Chapel Bishops Palace in Fulham London on 20th March 1708/9; About this time he married to a Jane but I have not been able to locate their marriage. Their first child Elizabeth was baptised in his parents parish of St Peters in Dorchester in April 1709.

It is not recorded where he served his curacy but I supect this was at the church of St Paul's in the parish of Hammoon in Dorset where the parish registers show that he and Jane were having their children baptised there from as early as Sep 1710. The very first entry in 1710 was for his 2nd daughter Jane and after the registration in a different hand, the word 'Rector' had been added. There is also a side line entry written virtically "'(First Entry of Revd Hen. [Henry] CHURCHILL (1709 became Rector see Parish Poor Books---) so he probably arrived in 1709 after being appointed a priest. The previous rector John Wilkins died and was buried there 27th March 1707/8 and there is a seperate side line entry "He continued Rector until 1719 see Parish Poor Books when he was succeeded by Revd John Crabb".


1. Elizabeth Churchill recorded as the daughter of Revd Henry CHURCHILL baptised St Peters Church Dorchester 2nd April 1709.
2. Jane Churchill recorded as daughter of Henry & Jane Churchill born August 23rd was baptised ye 21st of September 1710 [Rector]. She married Nicholas Gay at Morchard Bishop on 6th Dec 1738.
3. Henry CHURCHILL Junior (1711-1732) born November 4th and bap Hammoon 4th Dec 1711; admitted pens aged 19 at St John's College Oxford 7th April 1731. B. at Hammoon School Sherborne. Died in College buried at All Saints Parish Church, Cambridge on 26th July 1732 (CLDS Film 1818374).
4. Elizabeth Churchill baptised Hammoon 24th Aug 1713 and buried there 13th Oct 1713
5. Ann Churchill baptised Hammoon 08 Feb 1714
6. William Churchill baptised Hammoon 7 Feb 1715
7. Revd John Churchill baptised Hammoon 7 May 1716, (of Eggesford? see brother Christophers will)
8. Revd. Christopher CHURCHILL MA (1720-1800) baptised Morchard Bishop Devon 5th April 1720. He matriculated at Balliol College on 21st Mar 1737/8 aged 18 and was awarded his BA in 1741 and MA in 1744. he was jointly bound with two others for the correct administration of the estate of John Nelson Clerk of Dorchester in a letter of Administration dated 24th Sep 1750 when described as being of Morchard Bishop. He married the same day to Mary NELSON at All Saints Church in Dorchester and had issue. He was instutited as a prebendary of Exeter Cathedral on 29th Aug 1795. He died leaving a will [PROB 11/1338] which was proved on 11th March 1800 when he was described as of the parish of St Thomas the Apostle, Exeter, Devon His sons John and Peter as executors were granted administration of his estate..

In 1719 he was appointed rector of St Marys Morchard Bishop in Devon where their 8th and final child was born. According to the Calendar of Wills and Administrations relating to Devon and Cornwall and proved in the Court of Principal Register of the Bishop of Exeter; Henry Churchill Cleric of Monchard Bishop died in 1751. (I do not currently have access to these records)

(2) William CHURCHILL (1686-aft 1723?) bap St Peters Church Dorchester on 4th Aug 1686 attended the 'Free School' in Dorchester in preparation for university and was admitted at Balliol College 20th March 1702/3 aged 16; BA 1706/7; Main beneficiary under kinsman Charles CHURCHILL of Fordington's will in 1723. [Note:-William JACOB (d.1724) the Elder of Dorchester was a clothier by trade and a record of him indenturing an apprentice survives in Corporation records dated 19th Sep 1720 when he took on Francis the son of Francis BEATON of Over Compton. . He wrote his will on 19th June 1723 and was buried at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 10th February 1724/5 in which he leaves his Messuage situated in Holy Trinity Parish, on the North side of High West Street, in trust with Baruth NOWELL the Minister of the Protestant Dissenters Church in Pease Lane for his wife Elizabeth, and after her death to his son John for life - subject to a payment of 40 shillings a year to both his son William, and daughter Elizabeth, described as the wife of Thomas EAMES. His Will was proved 21st Sep 1725.

Elizabeth JACOB nee MARTIN (d.1733) wrote her will on 27th Aug 1729 and was buried at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 6th Apr 1733. In her will she leaves the benefit of £100 of her money to her son John for life and after his death to his 4 sons John, Thomas, William and Samuel. Children from this marriage

(1) William JACOB (1684-aft 1729) baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 3rd Aug 1684. He married Elizabeth ANTRIM from Statton at St Peters Church in the parish of Winterborne Came in Dorset on 11th March 1711/12. He was left £150 in his fathers Will in 1724 and a bequest of £50 each to his children William and Elizabeth Jacob when they reach the age of 21. He was the main beneficiary under his mother's will in 1729 and joint executor with his daughter referred to as Elizabeth AMEY.

(2) John JACOB The Elder (1686-1759) bap Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 27th June 1686. He married on 17th Oct 1721 to Sarah COAD at All Saints Church in the parish of Poyntington in Dorset which lies 2 miles north of Sherborne. John was left £300 in his fathers will in 1724 and residual legatee on the family home when his mother died in 1733 subject to paying 40 shillings a year each to his 2 siblings for life. His mother's will leaves him the bed she lies on and the benefit of £100 of her money for life, and after his death to his 4 sons whom she names as John, Thomas, William and Samuel JACOB. (3) Elizabeth JACOB (1688/9-aft1729) bap Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 24th Feb 1688/9 referred to in her fathers will as the wife of Thomas EAMES (d.1745) whom she married at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 28th Jan 1718/19. Her father left her £150 in 1724 and a bequest of £50 each.

Note:- Henry ALDER (bur. 1741/2) was the 1st child from the marriage of Jeremiah ALDER to Avisse {Avis] COXE {COX] at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 25th Nov 1662. He was a witness to the nuncupative Will of John Milborne on 30th June 1696. The will of their son William written 21st Jan 1731 leaves his parents £10 to buy mourning rings so still living at that date. Henry Alder was buried at HT Church on 14th Jan 1741/2Children from this marriage:-

MARRIAGE in the Parish Church at Frampton Dorset under the heading "1699" Lawrence SHEPPARD of Dorchester and Elizabeth ENSOR of Melcombe [Regis] were married July 18

[Note:- Lawrence was the eldest child of Lawrence & Elizabeth SHEPPARD of Dorchester and baptised at Holy Trinity Church 1st Nov 1649. He married but his 1st wife died and was buried at All Saints Church Dorchester on 8th April 1699 (probably with his parents who were both buried at All Saints). Three months later at the age of 50 he marries at Frampton to Elizabeth ENSOR who gave birth to a daughter Elizabeth on 8th April 1700 but she died and was buried at All Saints the following day. Unfortunately Elizabeth appears to had problems with the birth of her next child as well. Ann was baptised on the 5th Sep 1702 the same day that Elizabeth was buried there. Lawrence was a beneficiary under his fathers will dated 24th Dec 1689 proved 30th April 1690 see Wills index for transcription]

[Note:- After marriage they settled in Holy Trinity Parish Dorchester where the following children were baptised. Mary recorded as the wife of John Rogers is probably one of the burials at HT on 10th July 1715 or 6th Oct 1718?

[Note:- Hannah BANGER was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester as the daughter of Richard BANGER on 28th Oct 1677. Unfortunately Parish Baptism registers for Wareham do not appear to have survived prior to 1762.
Thomas and Hannah had a son born on 21st Feb 1703/4 who was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester as Thomas the son of Thomas PAIN on 20th March 1703/4. An Inventory survives in the Dorset Archdeaconry available on ancestry.com - Image 197 of 319 which states :- "An Inventory of ye goods chattels & C {Credits} of Thomas PAINE Junior late of Wareham in ye County of Dorset deceased on 23rd of September last Appraised by us whose names are hereunto subscribed this 13th day of October 1704". From the inventory he was clearly a well established adult in Wareham and his death is the reason they only had one child. His widow Hannah PAIN re-married at Stinsford on 13th Sep 1716 to Thomas Armstrong.

Their son Thomas PAIN appears to have enlisted into the 3rd Regiment of Foot circa 1727 and served a total of 21 years before being medically discharged on 10th Feb 1748/9 as he was virtually blind.

Joseph GIGER Senior (1681-1718) shown above was the 2nd of 4 children by Joseph Giger the elder by his wife Joan nee Devenish of Charminster and baptised at All Saints church in Dorchester on 8th December 1681 so was 23 years old when they married. They had the following children the first as was traditional was in her home parish. All 4 survived and are mentioned in his will dated 16th August 1718 Elizabeth nee Chaldecut pre-deceased him being buried at All Saints Church on 16th Oct 1716 followed by Joseph 18th Sep 1718.:-

(1) Joseph Gigger (Junior) (1704-1740) Bap Hilton 25th Nov 1704 . Remained a bachelor being buried at All Saints church Dorchester 20th Jan 1740/1 . Churchwarden of St Peters 1734 see inscription on 1st of St Peters 8 bells. A letter of administration was granted for his estate to his spinster sister Elizabeth 15th Apr 1741.

[Note:- William WINZAR (1681/2-1738) was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 26 Jan 1681/2 the 2nd child from the marriage of John WINSER (1655-1743) and Mary GREENE who married at All Saints Church in Dorchester in January 1679/80. I have been unable to locate William's marriage but we can be sure he married as six of his children are beneficiaries under his younger brother Samuel WINDSAR's Will dated in 1760. These children are among those listed below. William was a witness to the Will of George GOUD a glover of Dorchester which was written on 4th July 1721. William WINZER was buried at All Saints Church on 15th July 1738. His widow Sarah WINZAR was also buried at All Saints church on 14th Jan 1754.

(1) William WINZAR (1706-1771) bap Holy Trinity Church Dorchester 1st July 1706; William married Eleanor ANTHONY at Puddletown on 17th Sep 1734 follow link for more information about his family. He was a beneficiary of £3 under brother Samuel WINZAR's Will dated 1st Nov 1760 and died at All Saints in 1771;

[Note:- Jane GRINDHAM (1665- ) had been baptised at All Saints church on 14th July 1665 the daughter of Nathaniel & Jane GRINDHAM. [Not located any baptisms in Dorset following marriage?]

[Note:- Samuel WINZAR (1683-1761) was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 4 Feb 1682/3 the 3rd child from the marriage of John WINSER (1656-1743) to Mary GREENE at All Saints Church in Dorchester in January 1679/80. The average age of marriage for women was 25 and parish registers for Winterborne Came only survive from 1696. It is possible that Elizabeth also came from Dorchester and they just chose to marry at nearby Winterborne Came ( 2.3 miles away) as many others did. If this was the case there is a baptism at St Peters Church in Dorchester for an Elizabeth the daughter of John HILLARD [HELLARD] in 1676. I have not however managed to clearly establish her background. As far as I can ascertain they had no children. Elizabeth was later buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 21st Apr 1743 recorded as Elizabeth the wife of Samuel WINZAR.

(1) Frances Lock (1708-1726) baptised at All St's Church Dorchester 9 Apr 1708, she married at All St's Church to William HAYDON on 5 Sep 1725; she was buried All St's 1 year later on 10 Aug 1726 so probably died from complications associated with childbirth. There was no issue.].
(2) George Lock (1709-1758) bap All St's 22nd Nov 1709 he married Elizabeth THORNE at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 30th Dec 1739 see their marriage for more information. George was buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 27th Jan 1758.
(3) Mary Lock (1711) bap All St's 30th Jan 1711/12 she married John SCORE at St Peters Church in Dorchester in Oct 1736.
(4) William Lock (1713-1716) bap All St's 6th Jan 1713/14 and buried there 16th Sep 1716 only 5 days after his younger sister Ann

(2) William Bartlett (1711/12-1772 ) bap All Saints 3rd Jan 1711/12 . William married Susannah WHITE at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 13th July 1735 when he would have received any inheritance or support from his father, hence the 1 shilling left in his fathers Will in 1741/2. (3) Edeth Bartlett (1713-1786) named after William's mother, bap All Saints 17th Sep 1713, She married to William STYLE at St Georges Church in Fordington on 29th July 1741. Follow link for info about their 6 children. Edith STYLE nee BARTLETT (1713-1786) was buried at FStG on 21st Sep 1786

(4) Ruben Bartlett (1715-1715) not baptised but buried with sibling John at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 15th Sep 1715. It is likely these were twins that did not survive birth

(5) John Bartlett (1715-1715) see Ruben above buried 15th Sep 1715.

John ENSOR (d. 1740) He was buried at All Saints church Dorchester 28th Sep 1740 and left a Will dated 18 Jan 1736 which was Proved 01 Nov 1740. In his Will he is described as a clothier by trade and the Municipal Records of Dorchester refer to a John ENSOR being apprenticed to a Lawrence Shepherd a clothier for 7 years on 7th Jan 1713/14. On the face of it this John ENSOR would have been unusually old to take on a 7 year apprenticeship as he was by then already married with 2 children, but what is interesting is that Lawrence Sheppard had been baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 1st Nov 1649 the son of Lawrence Shepherd who died in Dorchester leaving a Will dated 14th Dec 1689 (proved 30th Apr 1690). His mother had also been buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 19th Apr 1678. Lawrence Shepherd Junior married at Frampton on 18 July 1699 to Elizabeth ENSOR from Melcombe Regis raising the question of whether this John ENSOR may originate from there as well.

Hannah Lock (1687-1772) was the daughter of Robert LOCK (1658-1721) a victualler by his wife Hannah WILLIAMS who married at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 07-Feb 1681. See Robert LOCK's Will Dated 19 Jul 1721, Proved 20 Nov 1721, which refers to his Son-in-Law John ENSOR having borrowed £12 of his wife Hannah nee Williams in 1713 and leaves it to their first 2 children Hannah and Robert Ensor and a similar bequest to any other of his children that survives until his death and reaches the age of 21. She is sole executrix of her husbands will in 1740.Hannah ENSOR was buried at All Saints Church on 23rd Feb 1772.

(1) Hannah Ensor (1710-?) baptised All Saints Church Dorchester 5th Oct 1710. Left £6 by her grandfather Robert Lock in 1721. She married at All Sts Church 19th July 1732 to Richard HOPKINS and she was left 20 shillings in her fathers will in 1740 and her husband 1 shilling -- which is slightly at odds with a Letter of Administration recorded in Dorset Archdeaconry Court for Richard HOPKINS late of the parish of All Saints in Dorchester who died intestate with administration being granted to his principal creditor Richard Craston 12th Aug 1734 of Southwark in London.There is no mention of Hannah.

(2) Robert Ensor (1712-1769) baptised All Saints Church Dorchester 28 Sep 1712. Left £6 by his grandfather Robert Lock in 1721 and £6 by his father in 1736. He married at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 13th Jan 1736/37 to Mary LILY. Follow link for more information about their marriage. Mary died and was buried at All Saints Church on 22 Mar 1747/8. I have not located any children from this marriage. Robert remarried to Martha HARMAN at Holy Trinity Church on 10th Sep 1753 and they had a daughter Martha baptised at Holy Trinity Church on 7th Jan 1758. Robert's name also appears on the list of people elibile to serve in the Militia for the parish of Holy Trinity in the year 1758 when he is described as a Clothier by trade. He was buried at All Saints 15th Oct 1769. Martha died a pauper and was buried at All Saints Church 5th April 1790.

(3) John Ensor (1714-bet 1750-1812) bap St George Church Fordington 4th March 1714/15. Left £6 in his fathers Will in 1736. He married Elizabeth DOWLL [DOWELL] at St Georges Church in Fordington on 11-Apr 1737. Follow link for more information about this family.

(4) William Ensor (1716-1720) bap St Georges Church Fordington 19th Nov 1716. Buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 9th June 1720

(5) Elizabeth Ensor (1718- aft 1748) bap St George Church Fordington 17th Nov 1718; Left £10 in his father's Will in 1736. She married George STICKLAND at St Georges Church in Fordington on 11th Sep 1748. Nothing else known.

(6) William Ensor (1720-1724) bap St Georges Church Fordington 26th Jan 1720/21 and buried at All Saints church in Dorchester on 07 Jun 1724

(7) Thomas Ensor bap (1723-1767) bap St Georges Church Fordington 3rd June 1723; Left £10 in his father's Will in 1736. Thomas's name also appears on the list of people elibile to serve in the Militia for the parish of St Peters in the year 1758 when he is described as a Woolcomber by trade. (8) George Ensor (1725- aft 1736) bap St Georges Church Fordington 1st July 1725; Left £10 in his father's Will in 1736. Nothing else known.

(9) William Ensor (1727-1788) bap St Georges Church Fordington 27th Nov 1727; Left £10 in his father's Will in 1736. William's name also appears on the list of people elibile to serve in the Militia for the parish of All Saints in the year 1758 when he is described as a Cordwainer by trade. William Married at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester to Sarah BUSHROD on 07-Nov 1753. Follow link for more information about this family.

[Note:- There are no children born in Wyke Regis following this marriage. Also although poor quality I later confirmed my translation was the same as that published in "Marriages" Volume V, edited by W P W Phillimore & Edmund Neville, published in 1910" and transcribed for OPC by Barbara Hunt. ]

John BARTLETT (1685-1753) was a Malster by trade and had been baptised at All Saints Church on 29th Mar 1685 the son of John BARTLETT the Elder by his wife Margaret. He was therefore the elder brother of George BARTLETT who had married Ebett FURMAGE at St Peters Church in Dorchester 26th Oct 1717. After marriage John and Lucy settled to live in All Saints Parish in Dorchester where a daughter Elizabeth BARTLETT (1710-1750) was baptised on 11th June 1710. Although we do not have a baptism we know of another son John Bartlett that was buried at All Saints, recorded as he was buried on 10th Feb 1717/18 as, 'John the son of John & Lucy BARTLETT'. John acted as surity for the Administration of George Bartlett's estate when he died intestate in 1731 and their daughter Elizabeth Bartlett (1710-1750) signed the Letter of Administration as a witness.

John BARTLETT Senior was buried at All Saints Church on 7th Jan 1753 and left a Will dated 10th Aug 1752 which was proved by the oath of 'the widow and Relict of the deceased Lucy BARTLETT' on 18th Jan 1709. He was clearly by standards of the day reasonably wealthy refering to 'houses' when he left everything to his wife.The only other bequest was an Item stating:- ' I leave to all my children a shilling each'. This was a common legal ploy used in Wills to prevent, and rule out, anyone who might be able to contest the Will. It's inclusion here however in 1752 does probably mean that they had other children we know nothing about.  Lucy was buried as Lucia BARTLETT Widow at All Saints Church Dorchester on 30th Jan 1772.

Their surviving daughter Elizabeth BARTLETT (1710-1750), described as being from Dorchester, married Henry EVOMY of Blandford Forum at Milton Abbas on 14th Aug 1732. They did not settle in Milton Abbas and I notice that a daughter named as Lucia is recorded in St Peters parish as being baptised there on 16th April 1734 to a Harry EVOMY. This child descibed as Lucia the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth EVOMY was later buried at All Saints Church on 3rd June 1744, Followed on 20th Aug 1750 by Elizabeth the wife of Henry EVOMY.

Note:- 1710-1721: Despite an extensive search I have not been able to locate Edward and Martha after their marriage here in 1710 for the next 11 years during which time they undoubtedly raised their family until , Edward moved them all to live in Dorchester and was appointed Keeper of the County Gaol there in 1721. On 12th July 1723 Edward was probably living in Fordington as he was a witness to a Bastardy Maintenance Bond signed there between William CHURCHILL a husbandman of Fordington and the Churchwardens of St Georges Church regarding the birth of a bastard child on the body of the widow Charity Churchill.

I only know of two, possibly three, children who are shown below, but there were probably others.

(1) James CHAFFEY Senior (c1711-1782). We pick up James at his marriage to Elizabeth BATT at Compton Valence in Dorset on 6th Feb 1736/7 when he is described as being from All Saints Parish in Dorchester which is where the Gaol was situated. Follow link for more information about his family and descendants. As was traditional James took over the roll of Keeper of Dorchesters Gaol from his father on his fathers death in 1728.

(2) Edward CHAFFEY Junior (c 1714-1778) As a young man he moved to live in Fordington where he learned the trade of being a currier. By 1838 he was well established as he was able to take on his first apprentice (Simon Jenkins). Annoyingly I cannot locate Edward's marriage to his wife Joan circa 1742, but they settled in Fordington and raised five children there (follow link provided for more information) . His children and wife all seem to have pre-deceased him but he left a Will dated 16th Sep 1778 leaving everything to his brother James which firmly links him as part of the same family. .

(3) Daniel CHAFEY (c1718--1756) He became a Cutler by trade and established his own business before he married Susannah JACKSON at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 10th April 1748. Follow link for more information about his family.

Note:- Edward CHAFFEY Senior (bur.1727/8) was appointed Keeper of the County Gaol in Dorchester in 1721 and his name appears in the Quarter Session Records each year from that date when he claimed his expenses from the Court for a variety of costs, not only in repairing the Gaol, but also transporting prisoners to the gaol for punishment such as being whipped through the streets or transportation to the West Indies etc. Link to some Quarter Session records (then scroll down for other entries)

The job of Keeper of the County Gaol had, with only a few short exceptions, been traditionally passed down in the same family. Thomas SPARROW (bur.1629) for example was Keeper from before 1614 until he tried to retire in 1626. It passed briefly to Thomas Devenish (c1589-aft 1638) who was dismissed in 1628, and Thomas SPARROW stepped back into the beach assisted by his son-in-law Renaldo Knapton Junior (1602-1666/7). Renaldo had married his only surviving daughter Cassandra SPARROW in 1627 and was made under sherriff of Dorset in 1629 the same year Thomas SPARROW died. Thomas Devenish appears to have been given another chance and Renaldo and his family moved to Fordington from All Saints in Dorchester. Irregularities continued however and by 1643 Renaldo KNAPTON was firmly back as Keeper of the Goal. On his death in 1666 the role of Keeper of the Gaol was passed to his son Thomas KNAPTON the elder (1628-1685) and from there to his son Thomas KNAPTON the Younger (1622-1725). He retired from the post in 1721 and the job passed across to Edward CHAFFEY (d.1727/8). Edward held the post until he died when his son James Chaffey (c.1711-1782) shown above took on the role who again held it until his own death in 1782 when it passed to his son Batt Chaffey in 1782.

His wife Martha CHAFFEY nee HERNE was later buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 9th Aug 1723 (Note:- specifically recorded as 'Martha ye wife of Mr. Edward Chafey' ). and she was joined at All Saints when Edward CHAFFEY Senior died and was buried there on 13th Feb 1727/8.

[Note:- William JACOB was the 1st child from the marriage of William JACOB (d.1724) & Elizabeth MARTIN (d.1733) at Charminster on 16th Oct 1683. He had been baptised at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 3rd Aug 1684 and married here to Elizabeth ANTRIM . He was left £150 in his fathers Will in 1724 and a bequest of £50 each to his children William and Elizabeth Jacob when they reach the age of 21. He was the main beneficiary under his mother's will in 1729 and joint executor with his daughter referred to as Elizabeth AMEY. ]

(1) Jane MEADER (1713-1722) bap HT 8th Feb 1713/14. Whilst still an infant she was a beneficiary under her grandmothers will in 1715 being left the best pair of doggs [i.e. firedogs] four pewter dishes & one kettle two pairs of sheets and one dozen of [damaged missing] napkins [rest of line damaged or missing] clothes & the low room on the south side of the house wherein I now live & a small garden plott according to the substance of the ground & the cork fewel house in case she pleases her father in matrimony. Unfortunately she died young being buried at HT Church on 26th March 1722.

(2) Samuel MEADER the Younger (1715/16-1756) bap HT 18th Jan 1715/16. He also like his forebears became a Millwright, and married Elizabeth [Betty] HUNT at at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 9th Apr 1738 who was also a beneficiary under Jane Guests will in 1748. Samuel died intestate and was buried at HT on 22 Dec 1756

(3) Catherine MEADER (b.1717) bap HT 1st Nov 1717 no other information located..

(4) John MEADER (1719-1720) bap HT 4th Dec 1719 and buried HT 6th March 1719/20

[Note:- There is some evidence to suggest that after marriage they settled for a time in her home parish of Beaminster as two children are recorded as being baptised there:-
(1) Elizabeth HUNT bap 27th Nov 1719 and (3) Thomas HUNT bap 11th Mar 1725. The parish registers & transcripts are by no means complete and it is possible that he had another son named (2) James HUNT between these two children who is the James HUNT (1724-1774) who later married Mary ROGERS (d.1764) at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 6th May 1744. I note that another son Ebaston the son of James HUNT was buried at Beaminster 9th Nov 1725 after which the family seems to have moved out of the parish and may well therefore have come to live in Dorchester circa 1726. Another child (4) Jean HUNT was duly baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 10 Jun 1728. James HUNT Senior was buried on 11th Apr 1770 at FStG when his age was recorded as being 80 years]

[Note:- Rev. John Nelson (1682-1750) He was the 6th child of John & Joan NELSON of Dorchester and baptised at Holy Trinity church in Dorchester on 22nd Oct 1682. He was educated at the free school in Dorchester being one of those who benefited from the John HILL Exhibition. pleb of Balliol College Oxford where he matriculated 19 May 1701 aged 16; he obtained he BA there 1 Feb 1704/5 and MA at Trinity College Cambridge in 1709. He was Ordained deacon (Sarum) Sept. 22, 1706; priest, Sept. 21, 1707. R. of Winterbourne Germayne, Dorset,better known as Winterborne Farringdon 1707-50. Served his curacy at Woodsford appoined 8 Sep 1716; Chaplain to the Duchess of Shrewsbury; R. of Winterbourne Clenston, 1719-50. He died in 1750 and was buried at St Peters church in Dorchester on 30th Mar that year. He died intestate so a Letter of Administration was granted on 24th Sep 1750 to his eldest daughter Elizabeth (his widow having renounced the right to do so on 22nd Sep). Martha 10th jan 1756

[Note:- Zachery [Zacheria] NELSON (1673-1735) was the eldest of seven children of John & Joan NELSON of Dorchester and baptised at Holy Trinity church on 6th July 1673. Follow link provided for more information about his parents and siblings. His father died in April 1715 and for such an influencial man he seems to have omitted to regularise the position of his son and heir Zacheria within the Corporation and I can't even locate a Will or Letter of administration for his father's estate. We find for example that Zacheria is only formally admitted as a member of the Company of Freemen on 15th Sep 1715 when it says he was apprenticed to his father John Nelson for 7 years. Given that his father is already dead this can only be a case of regularising the bookkeeping and recording that he has now paid the admission fee. Now he's a member of the Company they then formally recognise him as a Capital Burgess of Dorchester on 23rd Sep 1715. He was Bailff the following year and re-elected in 1719; 1722 and 1731. He was twice Mayor of Dorchester first in 1717 and again on 12th Dec 1729 . When the existing Alderman Richard SAMWAYS died he was elected in his place as an Alderman of Dorchester on 6th Feb 1726/7. He was buried at HT Church on 04 Feb 1735/6 leaving a Will dated 27 Jan 1735 in which he names his brother John Nelson (1682-1750); his brother in law Joseph Hardy; his wife Mary and 4 surviving children. Mary NELSON (1685-1773) appears as Widow Nelson on page 691 of the Municipal records of Dorchester as paying the burgage rate in Holy Trinity Parish in the year 1737. She died at the age of 88 being buried at HT on 14 Jan 1773. She left a will dated 29 Aug 1768 naming her son Zachary :-

(1) John Nelson (1719-aft 1750?) bap All Saints Church Dorchester 5th Aug 1719; beneficiary under his fathers will written 27 Jan 1735 and listed as a freeholder of property in Dorchester as an heir of Zachary Nelson in 1749 and 1750 (Page 695 Municipal records of Dorchester)

He was buried at West Stafford in Dorset on March ye 8th 1772 (image 41) and administration of his estate granted to his widow on 12th March 1772. His daughter Rebecca was buried at West Stafford on 15th Nov 1765 and his widow Rebecca WINZER (i.e. nee BONNETT) was buried at West Stafford on 17th June 1779 (image 42). [Guide* for those not used to old documents :- Care needs to be exercised when reading this particular register [image 54]. John Watkins marriage is actualy under marriages for the year A.^no D^m 1719: [meaning Anno Domini - in the year of our Lord 1719] there being no separate heading for 1720, - clearly an omission. The scribe is entering dates down the left column stating the month and underneath the day, hence it starts with March 30 [1719] for Robt Carter etc: The right hand column states whether it is a baptism or a marriage [which is expressed as Nupt: a recognised abbreviation for ' nupti fuerunt' or were married]. Burials are elsewhere in the Registers. The year changes from 1719 to 1720 after the baptism of Elizabeth ye daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Maber on 19th Feb 1719 (which should be expressed in transcriptions as 1719/20).

The month entry for John Watkins Marriage is not very clear but is ( 7^ber ) which refers to the seventh month of the year, which is not July but September as the year did not start until 25th March.

[Note:- John JACOB The Elder (1686-1759) was the 2nd child from the marriage of William JACOB to Elizabeth MARTIN at Charminster on 16th Oct 1683. He had been baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 27th June 1686. Under the terms of his fathers Will written on 19th June 1723 he inherited his parents house, which stood on the north side of High West Street in Dorchester, but not until after his mother Elizabeth nee Martin died in 1733. His mother in her Will dated 27th Aug 1729 left him the bed she lies on and the benefit of £100 of her money for his life, and after his death to his 4 named children listed below. He left a Will dated 3rd Aug 1752 and was buried at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 16th Dec 1759. His will was proved on 3rd Sep 1760.

(1) John JACOB Junior (c1722-1797) was born about 1722 and became an important mercer in Dorchester. He married on 8th Nov 1750 to Rebecca SPARKS at St Michael's church in the parish of Stinsford just 2 miles from Dorchester. Rebecca came from another non-conformist family who attended the Presbyterian Chapel in Pease Lane in Dorchester. When his father died in 1759 he and his wife named as Rebecca were each left 1 guinea and John was made residual legatee of his fathers estate after his brother Samuel . Follow link for more information about her family, their children and John's burial. Rebecca died in 1766 and John remarried at St Mary's church in Wareham by licence to Mary CHISMAN.

(2) Thomas JACOB (c1724-1745) born circa 1724. Living on 27th Aug 1729 when his grandmother Elizabeth nee Martin wrote her will. Thought to be the Thomas JACOB buried at St Peters Church on 8th Sep 1745 as not in his fathers will written 3rd Aug 1752.

(3) William JACOB (c1726-1745) born circa 1726. Livingon 27th Aug 1729 when his grandmother Elizabeth nee Martin wrote her will. Thought to be the William JACOB buried at St Peters 18th Feb 1745/6 as not in his fathers will written 3rd Aug 1752.

(4) Samuel JACOB (c1728-aft 1762) born circa 1728. He married circa 1756 to a Mary as they had 3 children that I know of (1) Samuel bap Presbyterian Chapel 8th Dec 1757 (2) Richard Phillip bap P/Chapel 5th Aug 1760 (3) George bap P/Chapel 3rd May1763. When his father died in 1759 he and his wife named as Mary were each left 1 guinea but Samuel was the main beneficiary of his fathers estate ]

(1) Ann VALLENCE (1727/8 - aft.1766) bap St Peters Church Dorchester 5th Mar 1727/8. She had an illegitimate daughter named Ann VALANCE baptised at St Peters Church on 15th April 1757, she later married Stephen ABBOTT at All Saints church on 2nd Dec 1790 and they had a son John baptised at All Saints on 8th Jan 1792 and then moved to live in Fordington where another son Stephen was bap at FStG Church on 24th Aug 1794. Ann VALLENCE Senior had a second illegitimate daughter named Jane Farr VALENCE at St Peters on 24th Sep 1763. Ann later married John DAVIS from the parish of Poole by Licence at St Peters Church Dorchester on 28th Dec 1766.

(5) William VALLENS (1737-1775 ) bap St Peters 31st May 1737. Later aged 17 William enlisted into the 65th Regiment of Foot but became ill with an incurable ulcer and was discharged as medically unfit after serving for 19 years. He received a pension from the Royal Hospital Chelsea from 17th Sep 1773. He returned to live at Dorchester and married Rebecca PADDOCK at Holy Trinity Church on 17th April 1775. Note:- John BUCKLAND (1705-1782) John was a surgeon and highly respected in Dorchester.They settled in Holy Trinity Parish to live where he became the most active member of their Church Vestry, his signature consistently appearing upon vestry minutes from as early as 10th March 1734/5. During 1763/4 he was Overseer of the Poor and 1765/7 churchwarden for the parish. Either he or his one of his sons is recorded as being paid for bleeding Mr HOBB's wife on 1st April 1770 and the burial register for the parish of Wool in Dorset on 18th Nov 1770 records the burial of a John Wellsted who died at Dorchester under the care of Dr Buckland 'who cut off a cancer from his shoulder" John was buried at HT on 12th Dec 1782 having been predeceased by his wife Sarah on 16th Aug 1779

(1) John Buckland (c1737-?) bap 29 Jan 1738/9 . He was admitted as a member of the Freemen of Dorchester on 21st Sept 1772.

(2) Peter Buckland (1739-1824) bap 29 Jan 1738/9 He is became eligible to serve in the Militia when he reached the age of 18 and is listed as such in 1758 when his trade is recorded as being that of a barber. He is later also described as being a hair dresser and perukemaker and he took on a number of apprentices (Samuel Wills 4th Feb 1770) (Joseph Bennett on 13th Nov 1770) (Joseph Pearce 1st July 1775)(John Buckland 1st Oct 1777). He married Ann CLINES (d.1803) in All Saints Church in Dorchester on 19th May 1768. This has been incorrectly recorded on ancestry as the marriage of 'John Buckland' but Peter is a beneficiary under the will of his mother-in-law 'the widow Ann Clines' when she wrote her will on 12th May 1780. The Holy Trinity Church Veswtry Minutes for 6th May 1765 appoint him as one of two assessors for land and window taxes for the parish for the ensuing year. He appears on Land Tax Returns for the parish of Holy Trinity as a proprietor in 1784-1792 when his tenant was William Chick. Ann his wife died and was buried at All Saints Church on 24th June 1803. Peter retired to live at Weymouth but when he died his body was returned to All Saints Church in Dorchester to be buried on 12th Feb 1824 with his wife aged 85.

(3) James Buckland (1742-?)bap 14 Feb 1742/3. He also followed his father to become a surgeon being indentured to his father as an apprentice on 1st Sep 1761, his father paying tax on the indenture on 21st Sep 1761. The Vestry Minutes for HT dated 27th November 1774 state" That Mr James BUCKLAND do innoculate the poor of this parish at 5/3 each and a Dr Buckland again on 3rd June 1781" He appears to have married an Elizabeth and settled in st Georges Parish in Fordington as 3 children are baptised there:- (1) James bap 21 Sep 1780 (2) Elizabeth 21 Sep 1780 and (3) Elizabeth 19 Jan 1783

(4) Thomas Buckland (1744-aft 1793) bap 13 Mar 1744/5. He married Sarah WINZAR at St Georges Church in Fordington on 28th July 1793.

[Note:- Although Elizabeth's surname has been partly obscured I am sure this must be Elizabeth BATT the daughter of George and Ann BATT who was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 20th July 1712. Her father George BATT had died intestate in 1726 being buried at All Saints on 14th June and a Letter of Administration issued to his widow Ann BATT on 26th Aug 1726. Also James and Elizabeth named thier 8th child 'Batt' .

James CHAFFEY Senior (c.1711-1782) was one of the children of Edward CHAFFEY Senior (bur 1727/8) and Martha HERNE who married at Mapperton in Dorset on 4th April 1710 and were living with their family in Dorchester from at least 1721. James took over the roll as Keeper of the County Gaol at Dorchester from his father on his fathers death in 1728. (Follow link for more information about his parents and sibling).

After marriage they returned to his Parish of All Saints where his mother-in-law Ann BATT was buried on 23rd Feb 1746/7. James was formally admitted as a Freemen of Dorchester on 23rd June 1748 and had become Churchwarden of All Saints by 1751, the following year he was appointed a Capital Burgess of Dorchester . He was appointed Bailiff of Dorchester in each of the years 1754; 1757; 1764; 1767; 1773-7 and elected Mayor of Dorchester 3 times in 1755, 1765 and again in 1775. His name appears amongst those chosen as being eligible to serve in the Militia for All Saints Parish in 1758 and he was formally appointed as an Alderman of Dorchester on 9th Oct 1761 replacing Thomas Cooper who had died. He was also one of the tristees of Lands owned by All Saints Church signing indentures on 22nd Jan 1768 (image 202 of 580 within All saints Parish Registers). Elizabeth CHAFFEY nee BATT (1712-1777) was buried at All Saints Church on 4th Apr 1777. James CHAFFEY Senior according to Hutchins died on 10th August and was buried at All Saints Church Dorchester on 14th Aug 1782. He left a Will dated 16 July 1782. Children :-

On 2nd May 1777 his name was one of those chosen by lot to serve on behalf of All Saints Parish in the Militia and from that return we also know that he was already serviing as one of the Serjeants at Mace in Dorchester . Like many of the more well to do he paid a substitute (a Thomas Hutchings) to serve in his place. He was a witness along with his brother Batt at the wedding of Dinah CHAFFEY to Thomas JUSTINS at St Georges Church in Fordington on 21st Jan 1768. [Note:- Robert Lumley KINGSTON (1712-1774) He was the third child of Francis KINGSTON a Quarter Master. His elder brother Francis was baptised at Holy Trinity on 8th Dec 1701 followed by his sister Mary on 9th Oct 1704 and his own baptism took place there on 29th Oct 1712. He became an attorney and quickly assumed a position of trust within the ruling classes in Dorchester. He is recorded as a signatory in the Vestry Minutes of Holy Trinity church from 1735; churchwarden of Holy Trinity in 1739 and recorded as taking on an apprentice (Simon Butler) on 20th Aug 1742.

He married at Nether Cerne in Dorset on 24th April 1774 to Mary WORSELY the 2nd daughter of Edward WORSLEY from the Isle of Wight and they went on to raise a family of 6 children in Dorchester :- (1) Mary bap HT 22 May 1747 (2) Francis Bap 13 Aug 1747. He went to Oxford matriculating at the age of 18 and awrded his BA at New College in 1770 and MA in 1774 (3) Jane bap HT 16th Jun 1749 (4) Edward bap HT 19 Nov 1750 (5) Robert Bap 7 Jun 1754 (6) John Bap HT 21 July 1755 and buried there on 23 Dec 1755.

He appears in the Militia listing for 1758 which confirms his profession of attorney but the height of his influence within the corporation came in 1769 when he was admitted Freeman of Dorchester on 29th October and a Capital Burgess on 2nd October. He was elected Mayor of Dorchester for 1771 and during his years service in that capacity commissioned the famous map of Dorchester that still survives and is displayed on this site (link) He was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 8 Oct 1773 leaving a will which was proved on the 3rd November.]

BACKGROUND Notes about this family:- [I am grateful to Mr Roy Bowden descendant for much of this background]

Edward CASHER (1740-1809) was born at Winterborne Monkton in Dorset, son of John and Ann CHASIER [i.e. CASHER]. He and his 4 siblings were all duly baptised in St Michael & St Jude's Church in the village. Vizt :- David Chashier bap 1st May 1732, John Chashier bap 13th April 1735, Elizabeth Casher bap 12th Apr 1738, Edward CASHER bap 15th Oct 1740, and Mary Casher bap 29th Nov 1744 [Ref CLDS Film 1239260].

The family were poor and like many others at this time struggled to find enough food to live on. As a consequence they came before the courts on a number of occasions. His brother John first appeared before the court with his father at the age of 13 in 1748 when they were both prosecuted for stealing by Henry Sherren a yeoman of Nether Cerne. John junior was next brought before the General Quarter Sessions held at Sherborne 25th April 1786 when he was described as being "John CASHER from the parish of Winterborne Monkton, aged 49 (born 1739?); unmarried; labourer with dark hair and complexion and grey eyes. He was found guilty of stealing two barton fowls and two ducks the property of William Thresher of Broadmayne a yeoman, valued at 10 shillings, for which it was "ordered that he be confined in the House of Correction of this County for three calendar months and to be publicly and severely whipped at Sherborne in this County on Saturday next in the public market place at noon and also to be publicly and severely whipped at Dorchester in this County at the market day there at noon previous to his being discharged. On the 14th May 1787 he was caught poaching and fined £20 or imprisoned for 3 months so was probably imprisoned. He was caught for a third time and found guilty of stealing fowl at the easter assizes in 1795 for which he spent two years in Dorchester Gaol (from 30th March 1795 to 14th April 1797)

Edward's elder brother David CASHER (1732-1795) married twice and by July 1767 was living at Fordington. Follow link for more information.

Edward CASHER (1740-1809) Described as being 21 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, single and from Winterbourne Monkton, volunteered as a Militia substitute and was accepted to serve for 3 years on 16th April 1762 for James Hellier from the parish of Buckland Newton who had been selected by ballot to serve for that parish. Completion of his service was confirmed at the meeting held at Dorchester on 29th March 1765 when he was described as Edward CASHER of Winterborne Monkton a carpenter by trade and substitute for James Hellier a blacksmith. [Note:- images available on ancestry.com] As shown above Edward married in Stratton when he was aged 23 to Mary nee DAVIS (1743-1817) and they moved to work and live in All Saints Parish in Dorchester around 1772/3. When they died however all members of the family appear to have been returned to Stratton for burial - possibly together in a family plot. Edward died at the age of 68 and was buried at Stratton on 2nd Jan 1809. Mary, who was then described as being from Bere Regis, died at the age of 74 being buried at Stratton on 3rd Dec 1817. They had the following children:-

Note:- Robert STICKLAND (1744-1804) was baptised at All Saints Church Dorchester on 29th June 1744 the eldest son of Nathaniel STICKLAND (d.1761) an attorney & Martha nee Small who married at All St's Church on 14 Nov 1742. He was apprenticed to his father at the age of 16 on 8th Jan 1760 and made a freeman of Dorchester on 18th March 1782 and 3 days later a Capital Burgess of the town. He was subsequently elected Bailiff of Dorchester 4 times, in 1783; 1789; 1790 and 1796 and Mayor 3 times in 1784; 1791 and 1799. On 22nd July 1794 when William Gundry died he was made an Alderman of Dorchester. Robert was buried at All Saints Church on 9 Feb 1804 and left a Will dated 2nd Jan 1804 which was proved in London on 07 March 1804. Jane STICKLAND nee MITCHEL (1744-1822) was buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 7th Jan 1822 at the age of 78. She also left a will dated 30 May 1817 which was proved by her son Nathaniel on 25 June 1822.

Children:- from the marriage:-
(1). Nathaniel Stickland (1770-1829) bap All St's Church 23rd Jan 1770. In 1797/8 the danger of invasion from France led to an increase in the size and organisation of the Militia. In May 1798 Nathaniel (with his fathers support) was made a Captain of the Dorset Militia and with 1,100 French soldiers landing in County Mayo in Ireland in August 1798 the Dorset & Devon Militia were ordered to Ireland. They embarked on the frigate HMS Arethusa on 1st Sep 1798 and arrived at Carrick on the 12th. Fortunately whilst they were in transit the French had already surrendered at the battle of Ballinamuck in the County Longford when 96 French officers and 748 men were taken prisoner. The Dorset Militia were then used to control local uprisings or disturbances and search for weapons before returning to Dorset in Oct 1799.

Nathaniel was made a Capital Burgess of Dorchester on 5th Oct 1801 and elected Bailiff of the town for the first time on 4th Oct 1802 (also Bailiff 5th Oct 1818 and 4th Oct 1819). The following year (1803) he was Mayor of Dorchester being elected again in 1810 and 1820. He was Executor and a beneficiary under his fathers will in 1804 and was elected Alderman of Dorchester on 2nd Oct 1809, and Town Clerk on 2nd Oct 1815. He remained a bachelor and died at Dorchester at the age of 59 and was buried at All Saints church on 15th May 1829. He left a Will dated 7th Aug 1828 which was Proved at London on 29 August leaving most of his estate to his siblings.

(2). Martha Stickland (1773-1781) bap All St's Church 20th May 1773 and buried there 16th July 1781

(3). Mary Suzanna Stickland (1773-1861) baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 20th May 1773. She married The Revd. George Edward COX LLB (1767-1822) at Spetisbury in Dorset on 6th January 1798. George Edward Cox was born in Aldersgate in London on 5th July and baptised as the son of William & Martha Cox at St Botolph's church on the 11th Oct 1767. As an adult he joined the church and had been appointed Rector of St Nicholas Church in Hinxworth Hertfordshire on 16th Nov 1797. He died there on 19th May 1822 being buried in the churchyard on 27th. He left a will dated 3rd July 1819 (PROB 11/1663) in which he leaves his estate to his wife Mary Susanna who, along with her brother Nathaniel Stickland a Gentleman of Dorchester, are named as joint executrix and executor. She had also been a beneficiary under her married name of Mary Suzanna COX in her mothers will dated in 1817 but proved in June 1822 when she was left £125 for her own use. They had 7 children together all born at Hinxworth in Hertfordshire:-


(3.1) George Cox (1799- 1878) bap Hinxworth 31 Jan 1799 - remained a bachelor granted probate of mothers will 1862, living 15 Southwick Crescent Hyde Park London in April 1871 aged 72. Died there 2nd March 1878 with his will proved by Henry Symonds of Dorchester Gent on 26th April 1878 - estate under £14,000
(3.2) Emily Ann Cox (1801-1874) born c1801 remained a spinster living with brother George aged 70 in April 1871 but then moved with her sister Charlotte to live at Cottered Buntingford Hertfordshire where she died 11th Oct 1874 leaving an estate of under £3,000
(3.3) Mary Ann Susannah Cox (1803-1899) (also recorded as Margaret) Born c1803, Bap Hinxworth with siblings 1 Jun 1818, remained a spinster, living with brother George April 1871 aged 68 at 15 Southwick Crescent Hyde Park in London Proved her sister Charlotte Will 24 Mar 1883.
(3.4) John Albion Cox (1806-1842) Born 1806 at Hinxworth he married on 12th Jan 1832 at Holy Trinity church in Dorchester to Dorcas Knight Sayers
(3.5) Charlotte Frances Cox (1808-1882) born c 1808; Bap Hinxworth 1 Jun 1818; remained a spinster; living with brother George at 15 Southwick Crescent Hyde Park in London in April 1871 aged 63, but then moved to live at 4 Cottered Street Buntingford Hertfordshire by April 1881 when age given as 73 with sister Emily. Died there 31st Oct 1882 leaving an estate of £11,120 proved by her sister Mary 24 March 1883.
(3.6) Jane Cox (1809-1882) Born Hinxworth 18 Jan 1809 Bap St Nicholas 1st June 1818; married Charles Charnock Nelson (1808-1878) 11 Dec 1845 St Johns church Paddington. He died 10 Sep 1878 leaving her a widow. Jane died 19 Mar 1882 at 30 Hyde Park Gardens leaving as estate of £45,980
(3.7) Henrietta Cox (1818 -1818 ) Bap St Nicholas church Hinxworth 1st June 1818 (may have been buried at St Mary's church Gloucestershire aged 7 months 3rd Aug 1818?)
(3,8) Martha Cox (1818 -1818) Bap 26th July 1818 and buried 1st Aug 1818 at Hinxworth.


By April 1851 Mary Susanna was recorded as living at 15 Southwick Crescent in the district of Paddington in London where she is described as a 'land holder'. With her are 4 of her unmarried children, George aged 52, Emily aged 50, Mary Ann aged 48 and Charlotte aged 42 with 3 servants also living in. By this date she had also adopted the use of an additional 3rd Christian name of 'Michel' which appears on the registration of her death at the GRO in 2nd quarter of 1861 and her burial record at Hinxworth which the Church of Latter Day Saints has recorded (Film xxx) as being on the 19th May 1861. She left a will however and an estate of just under £1,500 with probate granted to her son George on 24th March 1862. This states that she actually died on 24th May 1861 at Southwick Crescent Hyde Park London so it would be necessary to get the death certificate to confirm the true date of death

(4). John Parry Stickland (1774- 1776) baptised at the age of 18 months at All St's Church in Dorchester on 15th May 1776.

(5). Charles Stickland (1776-1845) bap All St's 29th Jan 1776. No mention in fathers Will of 1804 probably because he had already been set up in business. He married Maria COSENS at Longburton on 9 May 1815 and was left £250 in his mothers will in 1822.

(6). Henrietta Stickland (1777-1862) bap All St's 2nd Aug 1779 remained a spinster and was a beneficiary under her fathers will in 1804 and mothers will in 1822. Described as a landed proprietor, an annuitant, and of independent means all the census returns for 1841; 1851 and 1861 show here living at 6 South street (with her spinster sister Frances until she died in 1858) supported by a house servant Hannah Gibbs. She died on 26th April 1862 at Wrackleford House in the parish of Stratton (her widowed sister Jane's house) and was probably buried at Dorchester Cemetery. She left a Will which was proved on 4th June 1862 and an estate of under £5,000

(7). Jane Stickland (1780-1875) Not baptised until 1st Jan 1800 at All St's with her younger sister Frances; still a spinster she was a beneficiary under her fathers will in 1804. She married Robert PATTISON (1764-1845) on 4th Nov 1812 at Hinxworth in Hertfordshire and was a beneficiary under her brother Nathaniuel's will in 1829. They lived at Wrackleford House in Stratton where Robert died at the age of 81 being buried at Stratton on 11th Aug 1845. Jane died at her house on 11th April 1875. Her age at burial was given as 91? [GRO under Pattinson also records her age at death as 91] and she was buried with her husband on 20th April 1875 leaving a Will with 2 codicils and an estate of under £16,000..

(8). Ann Stickland (1783-1870) No trace of baptism. Still a spinster she was a beneficiary under her fathers will in 1804 and married the wealthy John McMahon (alias CREE) (1780-1853) of Thornhill House at All Saints Church on 25 July 1805. Ann was also a beneficiary under her mothers will in 1822 receiving £425 and her son Rev James Cree was execuor of her sister Henrietta's will in 1862. Ann was buried at Owermoigne at the age of 80 on 30th July 1870.

(9). Frances Stickalnd (1785-1858) Not baptised until 1st Jan 1800 at All St's with her elder sister Jane ; still a spinster she was a beneficiary under her fathers will in 1804 and mothers will (£250) in 1822. In 1841 she is living in South street with her spinster sister Henrietta. She died at Dorchester on 9th January 1858 leaving a Will which was proved by her sister Henrietta on 27th April 1858 and left an estate of under £3,000

[Note:- John SLADE (bur.1797) After marriage John and Elizabeth settled in her parish of Charminster where he became a Yeoman and raised a family there. John was buried at Charminster on 29th Oct 1797 In his Will he grants to his father Thomas SLADE for and during his life the weekly sum of four shillings. Also according to his Will Elizabeth was the daughter of John HARDY and at the time of his marriage there was a principle sum of money for £360 due on two mortgages on the freehold tenement which was her late fathers which he had long since paid off. This property was left to his wife and only son Josiah Slade in Trust with Giles MEECH of Dorchester and other provision made for his four suviving daughters Mary, Ann, Rebecca and Catherine.]

Robert GEORGE of Dorchester & Sarah LOCKE lic. married 4th July 1771 [Note:- Sarah LOCK was baptised 6th July 1749 at Charminster the 4th child of George LOCK (1709-1758)from the marriage of George LOCK (1709-1758) to Elizabeth THORNE (1714-1785) who married at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 30th Dec 1739 - see her sisters marriage 2nd Apr 1772 below.]

Note:- William NORMAN Junior (1750-1817) was born on 12th April and baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 11 May 1750 the son of William NORMAN Senior (1724-1805) by his wife Mary HELARD. Like his father he also became a hosier by trade and in 1781 helped his father run Holy Trinity parish, his name appearing on various vestry minutes of that time. When his father died in 1805 he was only left a sum of £10 which probably means that he had already had most of his inheritance, possibly when he married Jane Fore.

(4) John Symes Norman bap 14 Mar 1787 a "John son of William & Jane Norman" was buried at HT 27 Apr 1791

About the year 1800/1 he married to Ann HEWSTINS [also HEWSTENS & HUSTENS] the daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth HUSTINS who had been baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 10th April 1782. She had 3 siblings who along with her father all died by 1785. Her mother Elizabeth remarried to Henry MOWLAM at All Saints church on 5th Nov 1786 so from the age of 4 Ann adopted the surname of MOWLAM. (2) Esther Besant (1779 - Aft 1801 ?) Bap Holy Trinity Church Dorchester 26 May 1779. Inherited £20 under her fathers will in 1791 and the WHITE HART INN in All Saints Parish when her mother died.in 1795. She then appears to have sold her interest in the WHITE HART to her brother Thomas and moved to Weymouth to live on the proceeds. She marries Thomas HEWITT of Melcombe Regis in his parish on 5th May 1800. They had a son they named Thomas baptised at Melcombe Regis on 11th Aug 1801 who may have been buried at Wyke Regis 27th Sep 1801.

(3) James Miller Besant Junior (1781- bet. 1791-1795) Bap Holy Trinity Church Dorchester 03 Oct 1781. Inherited £20 under his fathers will in 1791. Must have died between his inclusion in his fathers will written on 13th May 1791 (when he inherited £20) and his absentce in his mother's Will written 18th May 1795.

(4) Sarah Besant (1784-1808) Bap St Peter's Church Dorchester 06 Jan 1784. Inherited £20 under her fathers will in 1791. Died unmarried buried at St Peters Church 29 Apr 1808

(5) John James Besant Sn (1787-1819) Bap St Peter's Church Dorchester 10 Jan 1787. Inherited £20 under his fathers will in 1791 and a house in the Butter Market in St Peters Parish when his mother died in 1795.He was buried at St Peters Church on 31 Jan 1819. The only possible record so far located in the 1851 Census:- nresident at High St Kentford Suffolk for a William AMOR aged 48 [he would be 51/52 ?] a Police Officer [who are likely to be posted anywhere?] born Trinity Dorset [Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester has the same recter as St Peters but other Holy Trinity Churches in Dorset eg Weymouth?] married to Mary AMOR aged 49 born Bedford Bedfordshire England. ]

[Note:- Richard LAKE (1756-1840) was bap at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 2nd Nov 1756 the son of Charles LAKE and Mary nee OLIVER. On 23rd July 1782 . After marriage here Richard and Elizabeth settled in Holy Trinity Parish where the children listed below were baptised. Elizabeth LAKE nee QUIVER (1747-1834) was buried at St Peters Church (but recorded as being from Holy Trinity Parish) on 30th Nov 1834 when her age was given as being 87 (i.e. born 1747) Richard LAKE was also buried at St Peters also recorded as being from Holy Trinity on 5th April 1840 when aged 82]

(1) Mary Lake (1793-1801) bap HT 28 Apr 1793 and buried HT 23rd Aug 1801

(2) Lucy Lake (c1801-1890) Probably born just after the turn of the century but bap HT 29 July 1808 with her 2 younger sisters Mary and Elizabeth. Her age of 98 at death in 1890 (i.e. born 1792) is unlikely to be correct as estimated after her decease and her parents 1st child was baptised in 1793. Census returns give her birth year as :- 1841 (1797-1801); 1851 (1801); 1861 (1802); 1871 72 (1799) ; 1881 83 (1798). Earlier returns are more likely to be correct and I have chosen 1801 above. She married to a school Master William Wallis NEEDELL at Melcombe Regis on 5th May 1828 and raised a family of 5 children there before her husband died and was buried at Melcombe Regis on 6th Sep 1849. Lucy had moved to live in Portsea with her unmarried daughter Elizabeth by 1871 and was living with her grandson and his family in 1881.She died within the 4th qtr of 1890 at Portsea.

Sarah died 8th & buried 15th Feb 1825 at HT and William followed her aged 82 on 1st Apr 1842. They had the following children:-
(1). William Lewis HENNING (1794-1876) born 27th May 1794 he was baptised at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester 8th Dec 1795. He married 23rd June 1825 to Ann Rose Shurlock at Bramley Surrey by whom he had six children.
(2). Eliza bap HT 4th March 1796, she married Captain Kellaway
(3) Charles Burt HENNING (1798-1871) bap privately on 13th Jan & received into HT church on 22nd Jan 1798. He married at Burton Bradstock to Charlotte Way on 2nd Dec 1822. A solicitor he died 25 Feb 1871 at Grove House Dorchester leaving an estate of under £2,000 to his widow Charlotte
(4) Jane HENNING (b.1803) bap HT 10th Jan 1803. She married William BRIDGE (1795-1858) at HT 16th Sep 1835]

[Note:- To understand this family it is first necessary to have an understanding of the area where they lived which is not straightforward. Charminster sits just 1.7 miles north of Dorchester but the boundary of Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester also extends some way north over the river to embrace the tiny hamlet of Frome Whitfield. Most of its inhabitants were farm labourers and with Frome Whitfield lying a bit eastwards but basically between Charminster and Dorchester births, marriages and deaths can be in in either, often depending on which fields they were employed on or where relatives lived. The hamlet like many others in the area takes it name from the River Frome which runs between Frome Whitfield and Dorchester itself. As a consequence it was often just referred to, even in Census Returns, as 'Whitfield' or 'Whitefield'. To complete the picture Stinsford lies under 2 miles east of the center of Dorchester and has a direct road running through Frome Whitfield to Charminster]

James BARTLETT (1770-1822) We known that James BARTLETT was born about 1770 from his burial at Charminster on 23rd Jan 1822 when he is recorded as being 52 years old. This of itself seems about right as he would be aged about 24, not far off the average age of 27 at which men married . At marriage both James and Lucy had Settlement at Charminster and it is clear that Lucy CLARK (1775-1855) was baptised at Charminster on 19th Feb 1775 the daughter of Stephen and Alice CLARK. but we know for certain that James was not born there as there were no Bartlett baptisms in the parish for at least a decade either side of 1770.

James, like the majority, was an agricultural labourer and died before Census returns became available but the birth of his children suggests to me that he was being hired annually, probably at the annual hiring fair in Dorchester. Employment usually meant working for the landlord for at least a year and he would provide a small cottage for the family which would have a small strip of land on which he could grow crops to feed them when not working in the Landlords fields. When their 1st child James Bartlett junior was born in 1795 they were living of Frome Whitfield. so had him baptised in the parish church of Holy Trinity in Dorchester. Their next child Jane Bartlett was baptised at St Michael's church in Stinsford in 1798. 5 of the remaining 6 children were all baptised at Charminster where they stayed until James died there at the age of 52 and was buried at St Mary's church on 23rd Jan 1822. Lucy is in the 1841 Census aged 70/74 and of independent means. Also the 1851 Census, Lucy Bartlett a widow aged 77; Pauper formerly Servant born Charminster. She lived to be 80 (ancestry.com image 44 of 154 - GRO 2nd qtr 1855 Dorchester Dist Ref5a/57) and was buried at St Mary's on 22nd May 1855. Children from this marriage:-

(1) James Bartlett (1795-1878) As explained above born at Frome Whitfield. and baptised in the parish church of Holy Trinity in Dorchester on 3rd May 1795. As a young man he worked as an agricultural labourer and by 1816 had made his way to Hilton where he was living when he married Charlotte COATES on 4th Jan 1816 in her parish of Dewlish Dorset. (2) Jane Bartlett (1798-1843) Bap St Michael's Church Stinsford 5th Aug 1798; Jane BARTLETT died aged 44 at Winterborne St Martin (Martinstown) but was buried at Charminster on 29th July 1843.

(3) Ralph Bartlett (1801-1848) Bap St Mary's Church Charminster Born on 25th Aug 1801 Privately Bap St Mary's Church Charminster 29th Aug 1801 Received into the church 27th Sep 1801; Witness at the wedding of his younger sister Ann in 1833. Married a Jane : Child George Bartlett bap Charminster 1836 [day and month blank] Ralph Bartlett was buried at Charminster on 12th Feb 1848. George Bartlett is living with his grandmother Lucy Bartlett in 1851 aged 15 a Cordwainers apprentice born Charminster.

(4) Deborah Bartlett (1804-aft 1871) Born on 22nd Aug 1804 Privately Bap St Mary's Church Charminster 30th Aug 1804, Received into the church 21st Oct 1804; C1851 Piddletrenthide Deborah Bartlett Servant unmarried aged 39? House Servant born Charminster. Deborah is still unmarried aged 60? born Charminster and visiting her sisters in the 1871 Census in Upwey staying with her married sister Martha MUSSELL and her husband Daniel who have living with them her sister Lucy aged 53.

(5) Ann Bartlett (1808-1889) Born on 14th May 1808 and baptised in St Mary's Church Charminster on 19th June 1808. She married by licence at Wyke Regis in Dorset on 8th April 1833 to a carpenter Daniel DAWE of Weymouth a bachelor, witnessed by her brother Ralph. She had 5 children by 1843 at Sherborne, Charminster and the youngest George Hamilton Dawe was baptised at St Georges Church in Fordington on 11th Jan 1844. The family emigrated to Australia and George married to an Elizabeth Chapman in Victoria in 1864. Ann DAWE nee BARTLETT (1808-1889) died at Yambuk Australia aged 85 in Aug 1889.

(6) Martha Bartlett (1811-aft1881) Bap Sydling St Nicholas 5th May 1811; She married a builder Daniel MUSSELL a native of Upwey and is in 1881 Census at Upwey aged 68 born Sydling [St Nicholas].

(7) Lucia [Lucy] Bartlett (1814-aft 1881) Bap St Mary's Charminster 27th Feb 1814 father a Labourer: C1841 Charminster, Lucy Bartlett aged 25/29 born in Dorset with her mother : C1851 Charminster with her mother Lucy, a widow aged 77 and a pauper; Lucy daughter unmarried aged 37 a farm servant born Charminster: C1871 Living with her brother-in- law and sister Martha Mussell at Upwey, Lucy aged 53 unmarried general domestic servant. born Charminster. C1881 still living with her sister Martha MUSSELL nee Bartlett , Lucy aged 64 Unmarried born Charminster:

(8) William Bartlett (1820- ) Bap St Mary's Charminster 9th Jan 1820 father a Labourer ; not traced any other records assume died no 'William Bartlett's in 1851 or later Census born at Charminster.

[Note:- Edward ENSOR (1748-1832) Gentleman was baptised on 8th Mar 1748 at Dorchester the son of John ENSOR (1714-1753) and Elizabeth DOWLE (1715-1781). He married first to Rebecca BARTLETT at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 23rd July 1770 but as far as I know they had no children before Rebecca died and was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington on 30th Jan 1795. Edward appears to be a butcher by trade as there is a record of him taking on apprentices, Richard Galpin on 12th Jan 1773 and George Pople 2nd Dec 1774. Also his elder brother William Ensor was a butcher as was their father.

Only 2 months later on 30th March 1795 Edward remarried at St John Church in Yeovil to Ruth STEPHENS (1767-1837). After marriage they had one child in All Saints Parish and 3 more in St Peters before moving to Fordington about the year 1803. In 1809 Edward is recorded as Churchwarden of St Georges Church in Fordington where they had several more children as shown below. Edward wrote his Will on Dated 20 Oct 1828 (follow link for transcription) making his sons Edward and John Ensor joint exectors but also provisions for his wife and other children. He is listed among the Gentry of Dorchester in the first ever Street Directory issued by Pigot's in 1830 and was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington on 19th Mar 1832 aged 83 Years. Ruth ENSOR nee STEPHENS was buried at St Georges Church Fordington on 3rd Feb 1837 aged 70 years. Children from this marriage :-

(1) Jane Ensor (1796-1877) We know for certain that Jane was a child of theirs as she is a beneficary under her fathers Will which he wrote on 28th Oct 1828. Her baptism however is recorded at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 2nd June 1796 but recorded as Jane the daughter of Edward and Mary ENSOR. As far as I can see this is an original error by the Parish Clerk as there is no such family and Jane's conception fits precisely Edward's marriage to Ruth. Jane moved with her family to Fordington circa 1803 and married there at St Georges Church on 17th April 1833 to a Chemist named John DAVIS, a bachelor form the parish of Holy Trinity in Dorchester. (2) Edward Ensor (1798-1884) bap St Peters Church Dorchester 19 Dec 1798; Beneficiary & joint executor under his fathers Will in 1828 which refers to him as being of Milborne Port in the County of Somerset a glove manufacturer. According to the British History On Line website the Ensor family started production of gloves at Milborne Port in 1820 and it appears that Edward was initially the main driving force behind this although his youngest brother Thomas Ensor seems to have suceeded him by 1841. Edward married Sarah LOADER (1801-1835) at Poynington Somerset by licence 23rd May 1821 and they had 3 children before she died at Milborne Port on 27th Jan 1835. Edward remarried to Ann STANTON on 30th July 1835 at Saint Sidwell's church in Exeter Devon. In 1841 they were living in Lyme Regis and in 1851 Ashby de la Zouch Leicestershire and finally Church Greasley Burton on Trent where Edward died 9th July 1884.

(3) John Ensor (1800-1870) bap St Peters Church 6th Feb 1800. He married Frances Elizabeth BESANT at Honiton-on-Otter, Devon on 5th Dec 1825. Follow link for more information about this family.

(4) William Ensor (1802-1804) bap St Peters Church 27th Jan 1802 and buried at St Georges Church Fordington on 18th April 1804

(5) Eliza Ensor (1804-1827) bap St Georges Church Fordington on 5th Jan 1804 Died aged 23 & buried at St Georges Church 26th Sep 1827 reported in Salisbury & Winchester Journal

(6) Thomas Ensor (1807-1875) bap St Georges Church Fordington 12th Nov 1807; Beneficiary under his fathers Will in 1828 he became a Wesleyan Methodist and had already moved to live in Milborne Port with his elder brother Edward manufacturing gloves by the time he married Harriet AVERY (1802-1869) the daughter of John & Mary Avery who had been baptised at Barnstaple in Devon on 22nd Oct 1802. They probably married at the Wesleyan Chapel in Milborne Port the year before their first child ie 1828. The British History Online website states "There were three facories in Milborne Port by 1851, by far the largest that of Thomas Ensor in North Street which processed the work of over 2,000 employees from the parish and beyond". In fact the April 1851 Census shows that he was employing 140 men, 70 boys and 1,800 women & girls. By 1861 Thomas is also stated to be a Wesleyan local preacher. They raised a family and 1871 they had moved to West Hill and employed 2,519 people. They raised a large family of children at Milborne Port circa 1829-1846 some of their baptisms can be found in the non-conformist registers on ancestry.com submitted by the Sherborne circuit Wesleyan Chapel. Thomas Ensor died on 10th June 1875 having retired to live in the Parish of St Leonard in Devon leaving an estate of just under £25,000.

[Note:- Although Ann HOOPER was clearly a resident spinster in Dewlish in 1795 she was not born there and I have not so far located her ancestry. Also still need to clearly identify which James BARTLETT (a bachelor) he is . Average age of marriage was 27 (i.e. born circa 1768) not so far located any children or their deaths or occupation?]

[Note:- Susannah Churchill (1774-1818) was baptised at Upwey on 18th Dec 1774 the daughter of William & Mary STANTON. After marriage they settled in his parish of Holy Trinity in Dorchester and raised a family of 8 children as shown below. Susannah died at Dorchester but her body was returned to Upwey for burial on 24 May 1818 when she was described as being aged 42 years.
(1) John Stanton Churchill (1797-1841) bap HT 5th Nov 1797. He moved to the parish of St Cuthbert in the City of Wells and married on 29th Dec 1817 at Shepton Mallett in Somerset to Mary Luff. They had at least 2 children. He died in the union workhouse at Wells in 1841 aged 44 and was buried at St Cuthbert's 2nd March 1841.
(2) William Churchill (1799-1845) bap HT 10th Feb 1799 he married a Susannah (surname unknown) and raised a family of 4 children at All Saints Parish in Dorchester

[Note:- Tracing James and Jane's Family and background has been particularly difficult. Both their children Elizabeth and Susan later had links to the Wesleyan movement so their parents may also have had non-conformist tendancies as I cannot locate baptisms for 4 of their chidren. I have therefore tried to stick as much as possible to proveable facts in establishing who their children were and these are listed below. Because we do not have consistent records it means that I cannot be sure of the order of birth and later research may add other children. ]

Note:- Thomas Gatehouse BESANT (1778-1808) he was baptised at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester 22nd Mar 1778 the son of James Miller Besant (1741-1792) to Sarah Gatehouse at St John the Baptist Church in North Cheriton Somerset in 1777. He inherited £20 under his fathers will in 1791 and the QUEENS ARMS in Holy Trinity Parish when his mother died in 1795. His sister Esther then appears to have moved to live in Weymouth. Thomas must have sold his interest in the Queens Arms and purchased that of the WHITE HART also in Holy Trinity Parish from his sister.

About the year 1800 he married to an Ann HEWSTINS / MOWLAM (1781-1858) and settled in Dorchester and had four children shown below. Ann HEWSTINS [also HEWSTENS & HUSTENS] was the daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth HUSTINS who had been baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 10th April 1782. She had 3 siblings who along with her father all died by 1785. Her mother Elizabeth remarried to Henry MOWLAM at All Saints church on 5th Nov 1786 so from the age of four Ann adopted the surname of MOWLAM. Her step sister Susannah MOWLAM married her husbands youngest brother John James BEASANT. Thomas Gatehouse Besant was buried at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 4th Mar 1808. Ann Besant was living with her son Thomas in 1851 in High East Street and states she was born in Dorchester. She died on 3rd July 1858 leaving an estate of just under £1,000 and was buried at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 7th July 1858 aged 77 years.


(1) Sarah Gatehouse Besant (1802-1802) bap Holy Trinity Church Dorchester 18th Jan 1802 and buried All Saints Church in Dorchester 15 Oct 1802

(2) Frances Elizabeth Besant (1803-1882) She was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 18th July 1803 and married on 5th Dec 1825 by licence to John Ensor (1800-1870) from the Parish of St Peters in Dorchester but at Honiton-on-Otter in Devon which was given as her parish. (3) Mary Mowlam Besant (1805-1876) Born on 12th May 1805 she was baptised at All Saints Church Dorchester on 28th June 1812 with her younger brother Thomas. She married at St Mary-Le-Bone in Westminster London on 7th Feb 1824 to Bennett HARVEY an ironmonger of Dorchester. Mary outlived her husband (who died in 1838) and she died on 31st Jan 1876 leaving a Will and estate of just under £600. [Follow link for more information about this family].

(4) Thomas Henry Gatehouse Besant (1806-1874) Born on 19th Nov 1806 he was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester with his elder sister Mary on 28th June 1812. He married Sarah Elizabeth BESANT (1816-1879) on 7th May 1849 at All Saints Church in Dorchester. As sole executor of her Will, administration of his mothers estate was granted to him on 8th Oct 1858 when he is referred to as a Major in the employ of the East India Company. He died at Dorchester on 16 Feb 1874 by which time he was a Colonel leaving an estate of just under £800 and was buried at the Civic Cemetery on the 20th Feb 1874 aged 68. Sarah Elizabeth Besant was also buried at the Civic cemetery on 12th Sep 1879 aged 63 years.

George STICKLAND the younger [signed as George Stickland Junior] of Dorchester a Gentleman and bachelor above the age of 21 years & Fanny APPLIN of the Parish of Saint Leonard Shoreditch in the County of Middlesex a widow entered into a marriage bond 22nd Dec 1802 with John Doe.

Note:- George STICKLAND Junior (1762-1824) was the 2nd child from the marriage of George STICKLAND (1735-1805) an Attorney in Dorchester by his wife Eleanor GUNDRY (1727-1815) who married at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 1st June 1760. George junior was baptised at Holy Triniy church on 13th Jan 1763. He did not attend university but was apprenticed on 30th June 1779 to Robert Kenning another Attorney in Dorchester to learn his fathers trade. He took over as Governor of the Company of Freemen in Dorchester from his father on 5th October 1801 and was one of the witnesses at his younger sister Sarah's wedding to Thomas Garland in the same church on 19th Nov 1801. He was elected Alderman of Dorchester on 3rd Oct 1814 to replace Charles White who had died the year before and was also elected Mayor of Dorchester on the same day (Salisbury & Winchester Journal Mon 10th Oct 1824). Pressure of work meant that he ceded his role as Governor of the Company of Freemen to Nathaniel Stickland on 3rd Oct 1814 but he was re-elected Governor on 30th Sep 1814 a position he held until his death in 1824. He became a magistrate and was appointed Town Clerk of Dorchester on 30th Sep 1816, a position he also held until his death. His position as Alderman of Dorchester was then taken by Charles Stickland (1776-1845). Children from this marriage:-

(1) Eleanor Jane Stickland (1804-1885) baptised at HT church in Dorchester as Eleanor Stickland. She married James CRISWICK at Andover in Hampshire on 10th Oct 1825. She was granted administration under her married name of her fathers estate on 8th Dec 1825 as her mother Fanny, his widow and relict, sole executrix and universal legatee for life, had failed to administer his estate as she was not well and subsequently also died being buried at HT with her husband on 5th Aug 1825. Eleanor had 4 children all born at Sherborne before she died at Queen's House Royal Hospital School Greenwich in Kent on 22nd Oct 1885 leaving an estate of £10,085.
(2) Louisa Stickland (1806-1806) bap HT Church in Dorchester 12th Mar 1806 and buried there 8th April 1806
(3) George John Stickland BA (1809-1876) baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 13th Jan 1809 he was the main beneficiary under his fathers will together with his sister Eleanor in 1825. George was admitted to Queens college Cambridge on 13th Jan 1836 but migrated to Trinity Hall 3rd Jan 1839 obtaining a BA degree in 1840. He was called to the bar Middle Temple on 26th May 1848. A Barrister at Law he lived initially at Westbury Sherborne and died on 5th May 1876 at 22 Circus Street Greenwich in Kent where he lived with his widowed sister Eleanor who as executrix was granted administration of his estate of £9,000 on 20th July 1876.

[Note:- Joseph AMOR (1787 - ) had been baptised on 9th Aug 1787 at Chardstock as the 2nd of six children from the marriage of John AMOR to Mary SUMMERS (1761-1839) who had married at Chardstock in Dorset on 3rd April 1781. His mother Mary had been baptised at Chardstock on Christmas day 1761 the daughter of Samuel & Joan SUMMERS. Joseph had an older brother Richard Amor bap at Chardstock 11th Nov 1781 and a younger sister Mary AMOR baptised there on 23rd Aug 1789 before the family moved to live in Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester where 3 more children wer born (Follow link for more information about his parents and siblings. .

Sarah was the daughter of John HIRON [IRON] of Winterborne Steepleton who married her mother Mary LANGTHORNE of Winterborne Whitchurch at Whitchurch Canonicorum on 26th Oct 1780. Their first known child Rebecca Hiron was baptised at Winterborne Steepleton on 9th Jan 1785 but by 1790 they were liviung in Frampton where Robert and the above Sarah IRON were baptised together on 23rd Mat 1790.

John and Sarah went on to have 10 children as listed below and from baptism and burial registers we know this family were living in Pease Lane Dorchester from 1829 to at least 1833. Joseph and Sarah appear to still be there in the June 1841 Census and at her burial in 1843. although Joseph's name appears to have been incorrectly entered as John Amor. By 1841 I think Joseph and Sarah were both in trouble as none of their 10 children are with them. Their daughter Sarah Amor (1817-1854) however had married a stone mason Thomas Hounsell (1818-1897) at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 4th June 1838 and they are in the 1841 census living in Shirehall Lane with a 2 year old son and twin daughters who are only 7 months old. Sarah however has also taken on her 3 youngest siblings being William aged 11, Edwin aged 9 and Charlotte aged 7. All we then know is that Joseph's wife Sarah AMOR nee HIRON (1790- 1843) died in the lunatic asylum and was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 12th Nov 1843 aged 53 years. I have not so far located what happened to Joseph. [Note:- The burial of a Joseph Amor at Crewkerne in Somerset aged 76 on 8th June 1855 is not him as he was in the Crewkerne 1841 Census a Draper by trade married to a Susanna] Children from this marriage :-

(1) Mary Ann Amor (1813-1883) bap 28th Feb 1813 at St Peters Church Dorchester ; She married Thomas Hogben on 30th May 1868 at St Lukes Church in St Marylebone London, Died Elhan Kent Dec 1883

(2) Charles Amor (1814-1851) born 10th May 1814 and baptised at St Mary's Church Frampton on the 19th June; He married Elizabeth House (1817-aft 1841) at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 17th July 1837 (Follow link for more information). Charles & Elizabeth are living at Greyhound Yard in St Peters Parish in June 1841. He is an outpatient of the Dorset County Hospital in 1847. Both Charles and his wife Elizabeth were among a group of 18 people who all appeared before the Epiphany Quarter Sessions held at Dorchester from 28th Sep 1848 to 6th Jan 1849 and were all aquitted of having committed a misdemeanor (Ancestry.com image 209 of 377). Charles died at Pease Lane and was buried at Holy Trinity on 26th Feb 1851 aged 36 years. His widow Elizabeth is living with their 2 children at Pease Lane in the 1851 Census.

(3) Sarah Amor (1816-1817) bap 11th Feb 1816 at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester; abode South Street in St Peters Parish; occupation of father tin plate worker; buried at St Peters Church Dorchester 16th Mar 1817; aged 14 months abode South Street.

Sarah Hounsell was buried at Upway 12th Jan 1854 aged 36

(5) Rebecca Amor (1819-1890) bap 7th Nov 1819 at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester; abode South Street in St Peters Parish; occupation of father a tinman; Rebecca married whilst still a minor to Jesse Lodge at Holy Trinity Church on 20th May 1839. Rebecca Lodge was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington on 22nd Dec1890.

(6) Joseph Amor (1822-1853) born on 6th May 1822 bap St Mary's Church Frampton Dorset 7th July. He married at St Georges Church in  Fordington  on 7th July 1845 to Mary Walters. Joseph's brother-in-law Thomas Hounsell was one of the witnesses. Joseph was described as a schoolmaster and they moved to live in Upway where they had 3 children (6.1) George Frederick bap Upwey 31 May 1846 (6.2) John bap Upwey 21 May 1848 and buried there 17th Jan 1866 aged 17. (6.3) Sarah Jane bap Upwey 20 Oct 1850. Joseph was buried at Upwey 11th June 1853 and his wife Mary at Upwey 6th Jan 1859

(7) George Amor (1826-1832) bap 19th Sep 1826 St Georges Church Fordington, abode Fordington; occupation of father a tinman; Buried Holy Trinity Church 19th Apr 1832 abode Pease Lane; aged 5 years 6 months

(8) William Amor (1829-1914) bap 15th Nov 1829 at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester; abode Pease Lane ; occupation of father a tinman; aged 11 in 1841 Census with his married sister Sarah Hounsell living in Shirehall Lane also with his 2 younger siblings Edwin and Charlotte. William became a Schoolmaster and married Eliza Stranwich Banns being read at Christ Church St Marylebone in Westminster London March/April 1857 and their marriage is registered in the district of Canterbury Kent during 2nd qtr 1857 [Ref 2a/779] His family appear in the 1911 Census living in Hampstead and showing that they had 10 children and had been married for 53 years William aged 81 and Eliza 77. William's death at the age of 86? is recorded during 3rd qtr 1828 in Hampstead.

(9) Edwin Amor (1831-1913) bap 25th Nov 1831 at St Peters Church Dorchester; abode Pease Lane ; occupation of father tinman. Strangely both Edwin and his younger sister Charlotte were both baptised for a second time together on 5th Jan 1840 in Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester when they were again described as children of John and Sarah Amor of Pease Lane and their fathers occupation given as that of a tin man. Aged 9 in 1841 Census with his married sister Sarah Hounsell living in Shirehall Lane. He married Fanny Childs at Holy Trinity on 25th Nov 1856. They raised a family of 10 children 1857-1876. - Follow link for more information about their family. Edwin lived to the age of 83 and was buried in the district of Weymouth Dorset during 3rd qtr 1913 Ref 5a/297.

(10) Charlotte Amor (1833-aft 1852) bap 12 Sep 1833 at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester; abode Pease Lane; occupation of father tinman; Baptised for a second time with her elder brother Edwin at Holy Trinity Church on 5th Jan 1840. Aged 7 in June 1841 Census with her married sister Sarah Hounsell living in Shirehall Lane. Charlotte was 1st admitted to the Dorset County Hospital as an outpatient from Upwey in 1850; Then from St Peters Parish in April 1851. In the 1851 Census she is living with her sister-in-law Elizabeth the widow of her brother Charles in Dorchester. She was admitted again in Jan 1852 from Holy Trinity Parish and discharged in March to Upway.Not located a marriage, death or burial.

[Note:- Elizabeth Batt STIMBRIDGE nee CHAFFEY (1768-1826) was the 3rd child from the marriage of James CHAFFEY the Younger (1740-1775) to Ann H|YDON at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 1st April 1764]

[Note:- James TARR (1787-1862) was a carpenter by trade and born at Skilgate in Somerset. Eleanor WHITE (1794-1866) was the daughter of Herbert and Ann WHITE and baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 21st April 1794. After marriage they settled in her parish of All Saints but moved to Fordington by 1819. In 1841 they lived in Bell st All Saints Parish; in 1851 Gallows Hill All Saints; in 1861 they are back in Bell Street James TARR was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 8th Aug 1862 aged 75. Eleanor joined him on the 18th May 1866 aged 72. Children from this marriage:-


(1) Mary Ann Tarr (1817-1866) bap All Saints Church Dorchester 29th June 1817; She married Thomas DEWLAND at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 8th June 1840 her siblings Thomas and Eleanor acting as witnesses. Mary Ann Dewland was buried at All Saints church on 9th April 1866 aged 48

(2) Thomas Herbert Tarr (1819-1890) bap St Georges Church Fordington [FStG] on 21st Oct 1819; He followed his fathers trade and was a Journeyman Carpenter by 1851 still unmarried and living with his family aged 32. (3) Eleanor Tarr (1822-1902) bap FStG 17th Apr 1822; She married William SOPER (1821-1905) a cabinet maker on 18th Feb 1849 at All Saints church in Dorchester. Eleanor SOPER nee TARR died aged 79 and was buried at Melcombe Regis on 6th March 1902.

(4) Jane Tarr (1824-1866) bap FStG 18th Nov 1824 ; She had an illegitimate daughter Louisa Eliza Tarr bap All Saints church Dorchester 17th Apr 1848. She remained with her family and was unmarried aged 35 in 1861 with her daughter aged 13. She married on 25th Jan 1863 in Holy Trinity Church in Weymouth to Thomas WILLIS aged 37. Jane Willis died during the 3rd qtr of 1866

(5) Emma Tarr (1827-1899) bap FStG 20 Aug 1827 ;She married a builder Stephen DENNIS (1826-1868) at Holy Trinity Church in Weymouth on 14th July 1862. Stephen died in in High East Street Dorchester and was buried at All Saints Church on 11th Dec 1868 aged 47. In 1891 his widow Emma Dennis was living at Wollaston Road in All Saints Parish Dorchester aged 62. Emma died aged 68 and was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 27th March 1899.

(6) Charlotte Tarr (1830-1911?) bap FStG 14th Apr 1830 she remained a spinster living with her married sister Emma Dennis in North Square in Dorchester in 1871 aged 38. She is probably the Charlotte Tarr single woman living at 2 Salisbury Terrace aged 59 born in Dorchester - and living in 1901 at 14 Victoria Road although she gives her birthplace as Charminster where the family lived and her youngest sister was baptised in 1838. Thought to have died 1st qtr 1911 Dorchester District aged 78.

(7) James Tarr (1832- aft.1864) bap FStG 18th Nov 1832 ; C51 unmarried aged 18 Plumber & Glazier; On Dec 28th 1863 James was arrested for vagrancy for the 8th time for lodging under a straw rick and sentenced to 7 days and discharged on 8th Jan 1864.

(8) Eliza Tarr (1838-aft. 1881 ) Baptised at Charminister 6th May 1838. With the family aged 3 in 1851. in 1861 she is a Dressmaker and in lodgings with Mary Robinson another older Dressmaker in Bell Street All Saints Parish Dorchester, just down the same street from her parents. She married Frederick John HURDEN at Weymouth in 1st qtr 1863. They had 3 children moving to Spettisbury (1871) and Christchurch in Hampshire (1881) Note:- There is a burial at Godmanstone for an Eliza Hurden aged 48 which might be her?.

[Note:- Charles STICKLAND (1776-1845) was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 29th January 1776 with his 18 month old brother John Parry Stickland and was the 5th child from the marriage of Mr Robert STICKLAND (1744-1804) and Jane MITCHELL (1748-1822) who had married at St James Church Westminster on 27th Dec 1767. a Lieutenant-Colonel of Her Majesty's 35th Regiment and elected a Capital Burgess of Dorchester on 8th May 1809 and Alderman on 20th Feb 1824. He was a Magistrate and Mayor of Dorchester 4 times in 1815; 1823; 1831; and 1836. Charles & Maria lived in South street St Peters Parish in Dorchester and Charles appears on a number of Jury lists as being from South Street between 1825 and 1840. He is also refered to as 'Colonel Charles Stickland of South Street' in the 1830 & and 1842 Pigot's Street Directories of Dorchester under the section listing 'Nobility, Gentry and Clergy'. As we might expect for such a prominent person he also features in surviving Electoral Registers, the 1841 Census and other street directories. Charles died on the 6th July 1845 and was buried at St Peters on the 12th leaving a will dated 6th June 1845. Maria STICKLAND nee COSENS (1792-1872) died on 30th Oct 1872 at Southampton aged 80 years but was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 6th November. Administration of her estate of under £600 was granted to her son Charles Edward Stickland on 24th Nov 1873. They has 7 children:-

(1). Jane Stickland (1816-1877) born on 6th Aug 1816 but not baptised at St Peters Church in Dorchester until 9th April 1824 with her siblings. Richard AMOR (1781-1857) the son of John Amor and Mary Summers and was baptised on 11th Nov 1781 at Saint Andrews Church in Chardstock which at that time was in Dorset (It was not transferred to Devon until 1896). His bride Hannah [Anna] CASE [nee RENDELL] (1793-1858) had been born on the 29th January 1796 into a family of non-conformits and was baptised as Mary the daughter of Joseph and Mary RENDELL at the Barrack Street Meeting House in Bridport on 26th October 1799. Her first marriage had been to Job CASE a widower of Sherborne at Bridport by Licence on 7th March 1814. Job had previously married Elizabeth SPENCER at Litton Cheney (which lies just odver 6 miles from Bridport) on 22nd Jan 1810 but Elizabeth was buried at Litton Cheney on 11th Nov 1813 aged 33 whilst they were living at the Sherborne Turnpike Gate .

Richard & Hannah initially settled to live in her parish of Bridport where Richard worked as a Cooper and attended the Non-Conformist Meeting house in Barrack Street. Their first child Ann was born and baptised there as shown below in 1817. I have not located a baptism for Charles (circa 1818) but their next son Joseph Rendell Amor was also baptised at Barrack St in 1821. By 1823 however they had moved to live in Dorchester and had their next son Alfred Amor baptised at the Independent Presbyterian Chapel in Pease Lane. By 1828 they had moved again to live in Fordington with their son Frederick being buried St Georges Church in Sep that year.

I think they must have asked for parochial support at this point as a Removal Order was issued to return them to Chardstock in Dorset which is where Richard was born. Removal Orders were issued, not only for Richard, Hannah his wife, Joseph aged 16; Alfred aged 14; Frederick aged 8 and Emily aged 6 on the 27th Oct 1838, but another against their son Charles Amor and his wife Charlotte on 14th Nov 1838. In the June 1841 Census however Richard and Hannah are back living in Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester at South Back Street with their children Joseph age 18 and Frederick aged 7. Ricahrd AMOR was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington on 13th Feb 1857 when aged 77 years and Hannah joined him on 12th March 1858 aged 66. Children:-

(1) Ann Edwards Amor (1817- ) the daughter of Richard Amor & Hannah his wife was born April 8th and baptised at the Barrack St Meeting House in Bridport on Oct 29th 1817. The Baptism entry actualy states that the Father is a Cooper & lives in Bridport.

(2) Charles Amor (1818-1896) Not located a baptism. He married Charlotte BARTLETT at St Georges Church in Fordington on 4th Sep 1838. Follow link for more information. In the June 1841 Census he is living with Charlotte in Wareham St East Fordington and in the Mar 1851 Census at Grove Buildings in West Fordington described as a stone cutter

by trade. He was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 15th May 1896 aged 80 years.

(3) Joseph Rendell Amor (1821-1904) born 7th Aug 1821 and baptised at the Barrack St Independent Meeting House in Bridport on 5th Nov 1821 When he was 18 years old his name appears on the Dorchester Prison Admission Register (on 12th Jan 1840) when his abode is given as Grove Buildings and his trade as that of a cooper.He was discharged on 14th Jan 1840. In the June 1841 Census age 18 with parents HT Dorchester. Appears to have married Lucy Hallet at Christchurch West Fordington on 14th Aug 1854

(4) Alfred Amor (1823-1891) son of Richard and Anna Amor born 26th June 1823 baptised Presbyterian Chapel Pease Lane Dorchester 24th Oct 1823; He married to Mary BARTLETT at Winterborne St Martin Dorset on 17th Nov 1845 and was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington on 3rd Nov 1891 aged 72

(5) Frederick Amor (1827-1828) Frederick was baptised at St Georges Church in Fordington  on the 22nd Sep 1828 and buried there on 28th Sep 1828 aged 1 year.

(6) Frederick Amor (1829-1907) Frederick was baptised at St Georges Church in Fordington on the 29th Aug 1829 [Note:- Surname incorrectly recorded as AYMER] In the June 1841 Census his age 7? with parents HT. He married at Christchurch West Fordington on 7th Sep 1852 to Matilda Jane Latley and they are living in Grove Buildings West Fordington in 1861 aged 32, a cooper like his father with his wife Matilda who was born in Devon and two Children Isaac aged 7 and Richard William aged 3

Note:- John WRIGHT Junior (1785-1861), according to the 1851 and 1861 Census returns for Fordington, was born in the Parish of Nether Exe in Devon. A small parish situated 5 miles north by east of Exeter and bounded on the west by the river Exe. The church is often referred to as St John the Baptist, but the 'British History Listed Buildings' website states that it's dedication is unknown. John Wright, who I have labled 'Junior' for the sake of clarity, was the eldest of 8 children of John Wright Senior by his wife Mary nee Darby who had married on 24th Jan 1785 in her parish of Bickleigh in Devon (just 5 miles north on the river Exe) [FHL Film Number:916811].

John Wright Senior and Mary's 8 children are listed below. I have not attempted further research on his siblings myself but there is much speculation on line that John's father and younger brother Gideon Darby Wright went to Canada and that he is the Gideon Wright who marries in Quebec Canada in 1818 to Marguerite Craig, settles there to live, and appears to name their son 'Gideon Darby Wright' in Drummonville Quebec on 3rd Oct 1847.

A farm labourer he married Mary the daughter of Thomas Rewe a nursery labourer in her parish church at Broadclyst in Devon on 9th Apr 1842 and raised a family in Broadclyst and later Kenton where he died 3rd Oct 1866. Mary Wright his widow also died at Kenton aged 53 on 30th Sep 1872.

As shown here I have not so far been able to locate John WRIGHT Junior's marriage and information about his bride so far is confined to 6 offical records. After marriage they settled in All Saints Parish Dorchester where they raised a family between 1821 and 1830 as detailed below. We have baptisms between 1821 and 1830 for 3 of their 4 children which all record her name as 'Elizabeth'. Two later Census returns (which confirm it is the same family) and her burial however all record her name as 'Ellen' . They also name a daughter Ellen but annoyingly we cannot trace her baptism which according to the 1841 Census occurred between 1823 and 1826, or anything else about her.

By June 1841 they had moved to live at South Back Street and although John's occupation is given as that of a labourer I think this is misleading as they already have some status and are a cut above the general labouring class. They are living with Mary Morton who, like his wife Ellen and their daughter also named Ellen aged 15 -19 are all regarded as being of independant means. Their eldest son Gideon has also already qualified as a journeyman shoemaker.

Their lives however undoubtedly took a marked change for the better when John and Ellen secured employment in 1851 as house servants working for George Evans Moule and his younger brother Frederick John Moule. They were both sons of Rev. Henry Moule vicar of St Georges Church in Fordington. George had just completed his education at Cambridge and been ordained a priest and returned home to serve as curate of St Georges Church (1851-1855) and help tutor his father's students. His brother Frederick had matriculated at Caius College in Cambridge on 26 June 1850 and came home regulary between university terms. As can be seem from the 1851 Census their father had used their rooms at the vicarage to board 6 students that he was preparing for univerisity so they had to rent a house to live in on Cuckold's Row (within their father's parish of Fordington). The whole family were Victorian pioneers of John White's vision of a godly community, and would have assisted any employees to better themselves and their family. George Evans Moule later became one of the first missionaries to China and he and his brother Arthur Evans Moule did much to introduce Christianity there.

John's wife Elizabeth alias Ellen WRIGHT (1793-1861) died aged 68 in Holloway (previously called Cuckold's Row) being buried at St Georges church in Fordington on 23rd January 1861 by Frederick John Moule. Three months later in the April 1861 Census John Wright is now recorded as a widower, and deceptively his occupation given as that of a gardener. In fact I think he was supplying their grocery business now being run by his unmarried daughter Sarah. John WRIGHT (1785-1861) was also buried at St Georges Church aged 78 on 29th October 1861 by the Rev Henry Moule. Their known children:-

(1) Gideon (Darby) WRIGHT (1821-1900 ) He was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester as Gideon WRIGHT on 8th June 1821 and also married under that name to Elizabeth SHEW at Durngate Chapel on 28th Dec 1841 and is referred to as such in his probate record in 1900. At various other times in his life however he also went by the name of Gideon Darby WRIGHT (See 1871 and 1891 Census returns, his death certificate and burial record). Darby was of course his great grandmothers maiden name. Follow initial link for the story of his life written by his great great grandson, Robert Douglas John Wright.

(2) Ellen WRIGHT (c1822-1826 - aft June 1841) Not located a baptism, aged 15 to 19 in 1841 Census born in Dorset with John, Ellen and Gideon. No other trace.

(3) George WRIGHT (bap 1828) Baptised All Saints Church Dorchester 30th Nov 1828. No other trace and not with the family in 1841 when he would have been only 13.

(4) Sarah WRIGHT (1830-aft 1901) Baptised at All Saints Church 22nd Aug 1830. In the June 1841 Census she is aged between 10 and 14 (actually 11) working as a servant in Millers Close in Fordington to Elizabeth SHAW who later that year became her brother Gideon's wife. In 1851 aged 20 she is living with her parents. Sarah, recorded as the daughter of John Wright a gardener, married 9 months after her fathers death to Thomas SHEPARD [SHEPHERD] (1838-1898) at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 13th July 1862. Thomas Shepherd a native of Buckhorn Weston in Dorset was a coach maker by trade and in April 1861 was a boarder in Fordington staying with Brownlow Westbrook who is described as being a Journeyman Coachmaker primitive methodist and local preacher. Aged 23 he almost certainly was completing an apprenticeship and able to strike out on his own. After marriage they moved to live in Kensington London where a son Frederick Thomas Shepherd was born in 1868. By 1871 they are in Paddington with Thomas working as a railway carriage maker and Sarah is described as a china and glass dealer. Here a daughter Helena (known as Nelly) is born. By 1881 they had moved to live in Croydon Surrey, Thomas still a carriage maker and Sarah has taken in a couple of boarders. Still at Drayton in 1891 their son Frederick has become a bookseller and stationer and Helena a music teacher. Thomas died at Croydon during 2nd qtr 1898 (GRO 2a/129) and Sarah moved in with her son in Norwood Lambeth where she is aged 69 in the 1901 Census.

Note:- John WELLSPING (1801-1875) was born at Castle Cary in Somerset, initally a carpenter by trade he became a succesful builder and by 1861 was manufacturing bricks, tiles and whiting employing 100 mechanics, labourers and boys : Children from his marriage were:- (1) Sarah bap Puncknowle 2nd May 1825 she married at Christchurch West Fordington on 9th May 1854 to Jesse PHELPS a widower from St Peters parish in Dorchester where he worked as a turnkey at the gaol. (2) John bap and buried StP 10th Feb 1830 (3) Jane bap StP 1st May 1831, she married at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 28th Jan 1856 to Charles WHITE a schoolmastetr. (4) James bap StP 10th Nov 1833 buried aged 10 at fordington 17th Dec 1843. (5) Ann bap St Georges Church Fordington 12th July 1836 and buried there aged 7 on 28th Nov 1843. (6) John WELLMAN (1840-1916) bap F StG 29th Mar 1840 he followed in his fathers business living pre 1881 at Swiss Cottage on the Great western Road west Fordington. He married Frances Devenish WIGHTMAN a spinster born at Sydling St Nicholas in Dorset but then of Chard in Somerset banns having been read at West Fordington by 17th Dec they probably married at Chard shortly thereafter. Frances died 3rd July 1913. John died 22nd Dec 1916 at 2 Cornwall Road Dorchester leaving an estate of £2,899.

Rebecca died in the 3rd qtr of 1871 and would have been buried at the Civic Cemetery. John having seen both his daughters succesfully married he passed on his business to his son John, and died at the age of 75 being buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 10th March 1875. He left a Will which was not proved until 1st July 1881 leaving a meagre estate of £283. 7s

[Note:- William RICKARD (1785-1841) was the second of eleven children of Thomas RICKARD (1758-1848) by his wife Elizabeth nee HICKS (1761-1852) who had married at Withiel in Cornwall on 16th Oct 1782.William RICKARD was baptised at Withiel on 27th Feb 1785. His younger brother Nicholas was Thomas & Elizabeth's 8th child and baptised at Withiel on 25th Nov 1799. Both brothers migrated to live in Dorset William marrying Elizabeth here at Bradpole in 1824 and settling in Dorchester to raise their family as indicated below. William and Elizabeth had their children all baptised in the Wesleyan Chapel in Weymouth until Dorchester was granted a circuit of it's own in 1831 from which time they were all baptised in the Wesleyan Chapel in North Square and after 1840 in the new Chapel in Durngate Street. Unfortunately we only have baptisms up to July 1837 so are denied details for their last 3 children. From the baptisms we know that his wife Elizabeth BARTLETT (c.1801-1865) was the daughter of James and Jane BARTLET Also that William and Elizabeth were living in Holy Trinity Parish in Miller's Passage off the High Street until at least January 1830 when their daughter Elizabeth was buried at Holy Trinity Church. From there they moved to Fordington to live and when Thomas their 4th child was baptised in Weymouth on 28th Feb 1830 William was said to be of Hamilton Row in Fordington .

They were still in Fordington in 1837 but by the time of the June 1841 Census they were all back in All Saints Parish in Dorchester in High East street. This Census is confusing as it gives Williams age as being in the 50 age band [i.e. aged 50 to 54] and Elizabeth's as 30 [aged 30 to 34]. William RICKARD died soon after the Census and he was buried in St Georges Church in Fordington but described as being from All Saints Parish but aged 40. This seems more likely to be correct to me so I have assumed for now that he was born about 1801. By 1851 Elizabeth, now a widow aged 48 (1803), was residing at 2 Salisbury Villas in Fordington working for Terrance Francis Nicholls and his wife Susan as a servant and nurse looking after their large family. Elizabeth was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington on 26th Aug 1865 aged 64 (1801). Children from this marriage:-

(1) William Rickard (1826-1827) born 18th Jan 1826 and baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel Weymouth 12th Feb 1826 and buried at Holy Trinity Church 9th May 1827 aged 15 months.

(2) Edward Rickard (1826-1911) born 13th Dec 1826 and baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel Weymouth 14th Jan 1827. Aged 15 to 19 in June 1841 Census. He married at Christchurch in West Fordington on 1st May 1848 to Caroline STANLEY the daughter of Henry STANLEY a chimney sweep. 2nd marriage to  Jane HIBBS  4th Mar 1866 FStG. (3) Elizabeth Rickard (1829-1830) born 2nd Jan 1829 baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel Weymouth 1st Feb 1829 and buried at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester 4th Jan 1830. She was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 4th Jan 1830 aged 8 months.

(4) Thomas Rickard (1830-1904) was born on 8th Feb 1830 and baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel Weymouth 28th Feb 1830. Aged 21 in April 1851 Census, unmarried living with his younger siblings at Millers Close in West Fordington. He had a Civil Marriage during the 3rd qtr 1852 when he married Emma GREEN. They had at least 2 children, Thomas William Rickard and Annie Rickard in Dorchester. In March 1858 Thomas the father was admitted to the outpatient register for the Dorset Count Hospital recorded as being aged 28 a Painter by trade from Fordington .His son Thomas William Rickard was also admitted to the outpatient register for the Dorset County Hospital in Dec 1861. Thomas had moved to live in Mile End Old Town in London with his daughter Annie by 1891 and died there aged 74 during 3rd qtr 1904.

(5) Jane Rickard (1831-aft 1901) born 12th Dec 1831 baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel in Dorchester 1st Jan 1832 Aged 9 in June 1841 Census. In 1851 Census visitor to Winterborne Houghton Dorset Jane aged 19 staying with Nicholas Rickard and Susan (who had married Holy Trinity Dorchester 19th July 1836) and their family.In June 1851 Jane was admitted to the Dorset County Hospital aged 20 years a discharged servant from Fordington under the care of Dr Cowdell. She appears in all registers 1851 to 1853 inc. She moved to London and married at St Mary's Finchley on Christmas day 1855 to a Labourer Thomas STEVENS the certificate (ancestry.com image 39 of 125) correctly recording her father as William RICKARD a gardener and the marriage witnessed by her younger sister Mary Ann RICKARD. She is in the 1901 Census living at Mile End Old Town in London, by then a widower aged 65 taking in washing as a business working for her own account

(6) Frederick Rickard (1834-1837) born 25th May 1834 baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel in Dorchester on 15th June 1834; Buried St Georges Church Fordington aged 2 years 3rd March 1837

(7) Mary Ann Rickard (1836- aft 1891) born 28th July 1836 baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel in Dorchester on 17th Aug 1836. Aged 14 in April 1851 Census living at Millers Close in West Fordington with her elder brother Thomas, a1838nd younger siblings Isaac and John. Mary Ann was admitted to the Dorset Count Hospital outpatient register in Apr 1858 described as being aged 21 a dressmaker from Fordington and again the following November. Mary Ann married at Christchurch West Fordington on 1st June 1868 to Walter James MILLS a Millwright. After marriage they settled in Beaminster where a son William Frederick was bap 15 Nov 1869. They moved to Winchester in Hampshire where 2 more children were born (Samuel Walter and Alfred Ernest). By 1891 Mary Ann was a widow residing at 2 Mossbury Rd Battersea with her 3 children

(8) Frederick Rickard (1838- ) [Note:- Not located at GRO] born 1838 aged 3 in June/1841 Census [No other trace - possibly an error in origianl census return for Isaac?]

(9) Isaac Rickard (1838/9-aft 1861?) Not located in 1841 Census? He joined the Royal Navy - Service No.30515 - ADM139/306/30515 has his service record and states date of Volunteering 6th July 1857. This gives his date of birth as 6th July 1839 although his birth is recorded at the GRO in the 3rd qtr 1838 Dorchester district Ref 8/49? born 1839. He is aged 12 in the 1851 Census with his siblings in Millers Close Fordington and in 1861 at Sea as an ordinary seaman unmarried aged 21 on board HMS Calypso.

(10) John Rickard (1841-aft 1851) Recorded at GRO as a male child unnamed 1st qtr 1841 Dorchester District Ref 8/506; born Jan 1841 as aged 3 months in June 1841 Census and 10 in 1851 at Millers Close in West Fordington In Dec 1854 he was admitted to the Dorset County Hospital recorded as being aged 14 an errand boy from Fordington.

[Note:- William Lewis HENNING (1794-1876) of Frome Whitfield Dorset J.P. was born on 27th May 1794 and baptised at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 8th Dec 1795 the son of William HENNING (1760-1842) by his wife Sarah LEWIS. He was Mayor of Dorchester in 1840 and married Ann Rose only daughter and heiress of Robert SHURLOCK of Snowdenham Bramley in Surrey. Ann died Feb 1866. See Burkes Family Records page 313: William died on 30th June 1876 at Weymouth leaving a will with a codicil. Described as formerly of Froome Whitfield in Dorchester but late of Weymouth his will was proved at the Principal Registry by Shurlock Henning his son of Froome Whitfield Colonel Commanding Her Majestys 38th Regt leaving an estate of under £2,000. [Note:- Philip TREVES (1800-1831) was the eldest son of William TREVES and Elizabeth nee GREENING a cabinet maker and upholsterer by trade who lived at Cornhill. Rebecca POLES (1807-?) was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth ROLES and was baptised at Melcombe Horsey on 24th May 1807. After marriage Philip operated as an Ironmonger at Cornhill and Rebecca gave birth to 2 children there, Eliza Jane bap at StP 24 Feb 1829 and Edwin bap at StP July 1830. Philip however died at the young age of 31 being buried at StP on 10th June 1831. After his death Rebecca continued to run the Ironmongers living with her brother-in-law William Treves at Cornhill until he married in 1842 when she moved to live in High East Street next to the Phoenix Inn where she ran a Stationers and Booksellers business. She was still there in 1851.

[Note:- James CHAFFEY (1800-1850) was the base born child of Ann CHAFFEY (1766-1805) and was baptised All Saints Church 31 Mar 1800. He married at Longburton Dorset to Anne BRETT (1800-1875), who gave her place of birth as Charminster in 1851 and 1871 but Piddletown in 1861. They are living in the June 1841 Census in Back South Street, James a Hosier by trade. Jury Lists for St Peters Parish for the years 1847 to 1850 inclusive also show that he was still a Hosier but living in South Street, a more prominent business location. James was buried St Peters Church Dorchester 1st Dec 1850 aged 50 years. Ann remained in South Street continuing her husbands hosiery business and was employing 4 women there in the 1861 Census. Ann CHAFFEY Nee BRETT stated to be from St Peters Parish in Dorchester was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 10th Aug 1875 when her age was given as being 78: Children from this marriage:-

(1) William James CHAFFEY (1828-1838) bap St Peters Church Dorchester as William James Chaffey on 11th July 1828 ; and buried St Peters Church as William Chaffey 16th Sep 1838 aged 10 years

[Note:-His full name was John Acres CURME (1804-1863) and he was the 3rd child of Thomas CURME by his wife Jane Fouracres. He was an upholsterer and cabinet maker by trade. Edna CURME (1799-1837) described as the wife of John Acres CURME of High Street Dorchester was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 05 Apr 1837 aged 38 years: John Acres CURME then remarried 20 Dec 1838 to Mary FEARNHEAD by Licence at Radipole in Dorset.Follow Link for more information. (1) John Thomas Curme (1828-1843) bap HT 2nd July 1828 and buried there 16th May 1843 aged 14 years.

(2) Edna Ann Curme (1830-1885) bap HT 16th June 1830 She married by licence the widower Revd. William Thomas McCormick (c.1838-1905) on 13th May 1869 by her uncle Revd. Thomas Curme in his church of St Martin's at Sandford in Oxfordshire when his daughter Alicia Edna Curme was a witness.

(3) Priscilla Jane Curme (1831-1833) bap HT 14th Dec 1831 and buried there 20 Jan 1833 aged 1 year.

[Note:- George SLADE (1800-1865) was the 3rd child from the marriage of Thomas SLADE (1767-1840), a Stone Mason by trade, to Mary LOCK (1770-1842) who married at Upwey in Dorset on 27th May 1792. His first marriage was to Elizabeth BISHOP at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 30th April 1823 by whom he had 2 children. He and his brother William are in Pigots Street Directory for Dorchester shown as stonemasons resident in High East Street. The following notice appeared in the Dorset County Chronicle on Thursday 20th Jan 1848:-

NOTICE- All Persons remaining indebted to the late firm of GEORGE and WILLIAM SLADE Builders of Dorchester are requested to pay the amount of their respective bills to Mr T.SLADE of No.2 Gloucester Square Southampton, who is duly authorised to institute legal proceedings for the recovery of such debts. Signed George SLADE and William SLADE Dated January 17 1848.

After collapse of their partnership George traded as a Surveyor and moved initially to live in Upway with his his 2nd wife Mary.By 1861 they were living at Radipole where George is recorded as being a Surveyor and Bank Share Holder along with his wife and unmarried daughter Elizabeth by his first marriage. George died on 9th June 1865 at Radipole leaving a Will and just under £6,000 which was proved by his brother William on 22nd June. George was buried on 13 June 1865 in Dorchesters Civic Cemetery]

(4) George SLADE (1830-1856) Born 28th July 1830 and baptised at the Presbyterian Chapel on 22nd Aug 1830. with his parents South Back St St Peters 1841 aged 11.He worked for the Great Western Railway employee 80660 as a Railway Clerk but died at the age of 25 being buried at Dorchesters Civic Cemetery on 25th April 1856.

[Note:- Charles HODGES (1806-1876) was the 3rd child from the marriage of Isaac HODGES to Mary TRIPP at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 5th Nov 1801. Sarah GROVES (1808-1852) was a native of Portesham but living in Dorchester when they married. Charles was a tailor by trade and after marriage they initially lived with his parents at Colliton Row, but had moved to Pease Lane by 1834. By June 1841 he was recorded as a Publican in charge of 'The Canteen' Public House West Fordington which basically served the soldiers stationed in Fordington Barracks. By 1851 they were living on Glyde Path Hill next door to his elder brother Isaac and Charles working as a master tailor employing 1 boy & his wife Sarah recorded as a milliner. Sarah died at the age of 44 whilst they were resident in Fordington and was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 19th April 1852. (1) John Hodges (1829-1830) born on 29 Jun 1829 at Colliton Row in Dorchester he was baptised at The Presbyterian Chapel, Pease Lane, Dorchester on 19 Jul 1829. He died aged 7 months and was buried at HT 25th Feb 1830.
(2) Sarah Hodges (1831- ) born on 1 Jan 1831, baptised at The Presbyterian Chapel, Pease Lane, Dorchester on 6 Feb 1831; aged 20, unmarried, working as a milliner & living with parents aged 20 in 1851 Census; By 1861 she is a schoolmistress living with her father and stepmother at the White Horse Inn.
(3) Mary Hodges (1832-1834) born on 31 Jan 1832, baptised at The Presbyterian Chapel, Pease Lane, Dorchester on 22 April 1832 and buried at HT on 22 Jun 1834; age 2 years 6 months
(4) Charles James Hodges (1833 -1835) born on 23 Dec 1833, baptised at The Presbyterian Chapel, Pease Lane, Dorchester on 1 Jan 1835; buried at HT on 30 Jan 1835; age 1 year;
(5) James Hodges (1835 - ) born on 6 Nov 1835, baptised at The Presbyterian Chapel, Pease Lane, Dorchester on 13 Dec 1835; aged 15 in 1851 Census apprentice tailor to his father
(6) Charles Hodges (1837-1838) born 3rd qtr 1837 [GRO8/41) and buried at HT on 24 May 1838 an infant
(7) Charles Hodges (1838- ) born 4th qtr 1839 (GRO 8/49) - aged 2 in 1841 Census ; aged 12 in 1851 Census
(8) Benjamin Hodges (1839 -) born 4th qtr 1839 (GRO 8/54) - aged 1 in 1841 Census; aged 11 1851 Census
(9) John Hodges (1842- ) born 2nd qtr 1842 (GRO 8/56) - aged 17 in the 1861 Census living with his father and stepmother but working as a whitesmith.
(10) Isaac Hodges (1844-1844) born 1st qtr 1844 (GRO 8/55) - Buried HT as Isaac the son of Charles & Sarah Hodges The Canteen in the Barracks at Fordington 26th Apr 1844 an infant.
