[Note:- Thomas BEAVIS (1794-1867) was the 5th Child from the marriage of John BEAVIS (1757-1813) to Sarah Mathews at St Georges Church in Fordington on 5th Nov 1780. Jane BEAVIS nee WHITE (1796-1864) was the daughter of John & Sarah WHITE. Her father John WHITE had married her mother Sarah SPRIG at St Georges Church in Fordington on 5th Aug 1784. Jane WHITE was born c1796 but baptised with her elder sister Anne and brother William at FStG Church on 15th April 1798. After the birth of thier 1st child in 1820 Thomas and Jane moved to live at West Stafford in Dorset where Thomas worked as an agrcultural labourer. They raised a family of 9 children as shown below. The 1861 Census shows both Thomas and Jane Bevis [Beavis] living in a cottage next to the Rectory with their daughter Sarah unmarried aged 29 and a grandaughter Elizabeth (Beatrice) Beavis aged 4 years born at Fordington (she was the daughter of their son William). Jane Beavis nee WHITE then died recorded at the GRO as Jane BEVISS (Ref 5a/302) during the 1st qtr of 1864 in the Dorchester Registration District (This includes West1820 Stafford). Unfortunately the original burial registers for West Stafford have only been deposited at the DHC for up to the year 1812. They seem to indicate that Bishops Transcripts are available there from 1812-1880 but these have not been filmed for ancsetry.com or CLDS. A GRO Death Registration was also issued during the 1st qtr of 1867 in the district of Dorchester for Thomas BEAVIS when his age was given as being 74. They probably were both therefore buried at West Stafford.

      (1) William Beavis (1820-1876) bap St Georges Church Fordington on 27th Jan 1820. He grew up at West Stafford working locally with his father as an agrcultural labourer and appears in the 1851 Census there aged 31 and unmarried. He married on 5th June 1853 at West Stafford at the age of 33 to Sarah PITMAN from the parish of Hilton in Dorset (but a native of Binghams Melcome) . After marriage William worked as a gardener getting work where he could. They settled initially at Hinton Martel in Dorset where a son Henry Arthur Beavis was born in 1854 and William's occupation is given as 'Manservant' . They then moved to Fordington to live in Holloway Row where William gained a job as a servant (probably as a gardener) and two children were born in 1856:- Elizabeth Beatrice Beavis and Walter John Beavis. By 1861 William had temporary work at Wyke Regis his daughter Elizabeth staying with his parents at West Stafford. By 1871 the family was back together at West Stafford. William BEAVIS died at the age of 56 during the last qtr 1876. (GRO Dorchester district Ref 5a/211). He was probably buried at West Stafford where parish registers are not available. After her husbands death Sarah promptly moved her family back to live in Dorchester in Durngate Street working as a nurse for many years. Sarah BEAVIS nee PITMAN (1826-1893) was buried at the civic cemetery in Dorchester aged 69 on 1st Nov 1893 when she was described as the widow of William Beavis a gardener. . Children from this marriage:-

(1.1) Henry Arthur Beavis (1854-aft 1871) born at Hinton Martell in Dorset and baptised at St John the Evangelist's Church there on 3rd September 1854. By 1871 he was recorded as aged 16 and already an apprentice to an engine fitter.

(1.2) Elizabeth Beatrice Beavis (1856-aft 1901) bap St Georges Church Fordington on 28th Sep 1856 ; 1861C staying in West Stafford with her paternal grandparents aged 4; 1871C aged 14 a servant working in Winterborne Came as an under kitchen maid. She married at Preshute in Wiltshire on 19th April 1877 to George Farmer who was 22 years her senior, a labourer, the son of Isaac Farmer. By 1901 she was a widow with 3 daughters living at 8 St Peters Terrace in Marleborough Wiltshire

(1.3) Walter John Beavis (1856-1883) bap St Georges Church Fordington on 28th Sep 1856. Having been apprenticed to a tailor by the age of 14 he was living with his parents in 1871. After his fathers death he joined the Army enlisting at Weymouth on 9th Aug 1877 and serving as a Soldier in the Grenadier Guards Soldier No. 6162 . He rose to the rank of Corporal and was discharged as medically unfit on 28th June 1882. He returned to lived in Dorchester working as a porter but died at the young age of 26 years and was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 20th April 1883.Walter John BEAVIS died at the age of

(1.4) Catherine Ann Beavis (1860-1902) she was baptised in Osmington Dorset on 2nd Dec 1860. In 1881 she was aged 21 working as a dressmaker living with her mother in All Saints parish. She married David Douglas a Tailor by trade who was 28 years her senior but he had a Pension from 1st Battalion of the Dorset Regiment. They had a civil marriage during 2nd qtr 1889. By 1901 they were living in St Peters Parish at 24 Colliton St. catherine Ann died at the age of 40 and was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 28th Jan 1902.

      (2) Thomas BEAVIS (1822-1896 ) bap West Stafford in 1822 but omitted in error see note inserted in the West Stafford Parish Register Signed W. Bedford, Curate in 1841. He is in the June 1841 Census living with his parents at West Stafford working as an agricultural labourer aged 18. He married Mary WHITE at Portesham in Dorset on 3rd Sep 1846 Follow link for more information about them.

      (3) Jane BEAVIS (1821-1880) bap at West Stafford as Jane BAVIS on 21st Oct 1821; A female Servant living in High West Street Dorchester in June 1841. She married a house servant called John BELBEN a native of Pulham in Dorset but living in Fordington on 26th Jan 1851 at West Stafford. They settled after marriage to live in Fordington residing at 'Stanton's Facory' but by 1861 were living in Broadway where John was working as a gardener and groom. By 1871 they were living in Winterborne St Martin but they returned to Fordington living in King Street. Jane died there on 26th Nov 1880 and was buried at St Georges Church on 1st Dec 1880. A memorial inscription on her grave states " In memory of Jane BELBEN who died Nov 26th 1880 aged 59 years . Also Ann BEVIS [BEAVIS] sister to the above who died Nov 30th 1873 aged 46 years". After her death and shortly before he died John BELBEN moved to live in North Square in Dorchester. His body was buried at St Georges Church on 6th Feb 1886 aged 56.

      (4) Ann Beavis (1825-1873) Baptised West Stafford as Ann Bavis dau of Thomas and Jane 29th May 1825. I have not been able to locate her in any census return. She remained a spinster and died on 30th Nov 1873 and was buried in the churchyard at St Georges Church on 5th December 1873 where there is/was a tombstone inscription to her and her married sister Jane BELBEN - see above (her death is recorded at the GRO Deaths 4th qtr 1873 aged 46 Ref 5a/211). Her burial record gives her abode as 'Back South Street' but this became Trinity Street between the 1841 and 1851 Census returns, so strange to see it used in 1873.

Mary Ann was baptised at Stratton on 24th June 1796 and was still a spinster aged 24 at the time of this marriage. . She later had an illegitimate daughter Elia White Lake bap Stratton 28th Dec 1823. She had many relatives living in Dorchester where her grandparents Richard LAKE (1733-1810) and Sarah LAKE nee JONES had many grandchildren.]

Note:- Charles HONEYBUN Senior (1791-1860) was 27 when he married Jane JENKINS (1786-1871) aged 32 who was the daughter of Henry JENKINS and had been baptised at the age of 2 at Wimborne Minster on 5th January 1788: After marriage they lived near Fordington Cross which is situated further on from St Georges Church at the bottom of Fordington Hill where the road is met by several others one of which is King Street. Here Charles operated a dairy farm selling milk to the surrounding poplace. Children from this marriage all baptised at St Georges Church were:- (1) Henry bap 5th Jan 1819 who must have died pre 1828 (2) John Bap 18 Feb 1822, became a yeoman farmer (dairyheard) who married by licence to Sarah Squire COX at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 25th Nov 1841. They lived at King Street Fordington (3) Emily (1824-1824) bap 26th March and buried aged 1 month on 19th April 1824 (4) Charles (1825-1860) bap 23rd Sep 1825 See comments below (5) Henry bap 13th July 1828: By 1841 Charles is being described as a Yeoman and his wife Jane as being of Independant means and they are living at Fordington Hill. They have sufficient wealth to send their youngest son Henry (then aged 12) to the boarding school run by the headmaster William WATSON in High West Street, whilst Charles is teaching both his sons John & Charles his business at home. In 1851 Charles is recorded as a dairyman Milk Seller resident near 'The Cross'. As far as I can tell they seem to have always run the farm there and used accommodation at Fordington Hill as a dairy shop from which they sold milk]

Their son Charles HONEYBUN Junior (1825-1880) married a Sarah Ann ( I have not been able to locate a marriage but she was born in Fordington) and had 8 children (1860-1876) and lived initially at the Cross Fordington moving to Fordington Hill about the middle of 1863 and then King Street ten years later. Children bap St Georges were:- (1) Tom bap 12 Jan 1860 (2) Walter (1861-1896) bap 25 Aug 1861 a dairyman who married Sarah and left her a meager estate of £42-18-1d when he died on 1st jan 1896 (3) Harry bap 4th Feb 1863 (4) Fred bap 8th Dec 1864 (5) Alice bap 11th Jan 1871 worked in Dorchester as a parlourmaid in 1891 (6) James George bap 10th July 1872 (7) John bap 14th may 1874 (8) William Sidney bap 13th Dec 1876

150. 1829 February 10th William BARTLETT otp & Susannah SWYER otp
Banns by J Morton Colson; Witnesses: James WINZOR & Mary BISHOP [CLDS Image 4002461-00412]

[Note:- William BARTLETT (1805-1895) was born in 1805 the son of William and Ann Bartlett and baptised in the parish church of All Saints in Dorchester aged 2 years on March 1807. Susannah SWYER (1806-1850) had been baptised at St Georges Church in Fordington on 13th March 1806 the daughter of John SWYER and Honor Vincent who had married in the parish on 30th May 1803. William and Susannah were Wesleyan Methodists and had their first child William baptised in the Wesleyan Chapel in Conyger Road in Weymouth as the The Chapel in North Square in Dorchester did not open until 1831. Unfortunately we only have the baptisms of their other children up to June 1837 as later registers have yet to be deposited at the DHC. His name appears in the 1839 Roberts Street Directory of Dorchester where he is listed as a shopkeeper of Fordington. William was described as a Tea dealer living in Fordington High Street in 1841, but had moved to live in South Street in the parish of St Giles in Colchester in Essex by 1850 when his wife Susannah died there (GRO Deaths 4th qtr 1850 Ref 12/46). William BARTLETT was described in the 1851 Census for Colchester as a widower and a Town Missionary. He then had a Civil Marriage to Harriett Sarah MANN a native of Colchester during the 4th qtr 1852 (GRO Ref 4a/429) and was living with her in Magdelain Street in Colchester in the 1861 Census still described as a town Missionary and with him is his son Joseph from his first marriage and 2 children by his 2nd wife. He was still there in 1871 but by 1881 had moved into one of the towns 'Gift Houses' (i.e. Alms Houses) William BARTLETT died there on 11th May 1895 still described as a Town Missionary of Colchester leaving a modest estate of £60.14s.0d. Children from this marriage:-

    (1) William (1829- aft 1881) was born in Fordington on 22nd Dec 1829 and baptised in the Wesleyan Chapel at Conygar Lane, Weymouth on 10th January 1830. With his parents aged 11 in Fordington in June 1841. He learned a trade to become a plaisterer and was already living in lodgings in Oxford Road, Aylesbury unmarried aged 21 in the April 1851 Census. He had a civil marriage in Birmingham during the 1st qtr 1852 (GRO Birm Ref 6d/186) to Mary KELLY who already had a young daughter Mary Ann who was born, as she was, in Ireland. By 1861 they were living in Yardley Worcestershire by which time they had 2 daughters of their own, both born in Aston Birmingham, Susanna named after his mother aged 8 and Jane (1857-1898) aged 5 who later married Alfred Price in 1876. They were still in Aston in the 1871 and 1881 Census returns.

    (2) Mary Ann Bartlett (1831-1835) was born August 3rd 1831 and baptised in the Wesleyan Chapel in North Square Dorchester on 24th of the same month. She was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington (The Chapel had no burial Ground) aged 4 years on 11th Nov 1835.

    (3) John Bartlett (1833-1834) born 25th Jan 1833 and baptised in the Wesleyan Chapel in North Square Dorchester on 24th Feb 1833. He was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington aged 1 year on 13th July 1834.

    (4) Susannah Maria Bartlett (1834-1919) born on 17th Dec 1834 she was baptised in the Wesleyan Chapel in North Square Dorchester on 25th Jan 1835. She moved to Colchester with the family but trained to be a nurse in London and was unmarried living in Chelsea in 1861. She had a Civil Marriage in Colchester Essex to a labourer Henry FIELD (1836-1908) during 4th qtr of 1867 (Ref 4a/551)and settled initially to live in Colchester in Harwich Road where they had 2 children. In the 1881 Census Henry Field is described as a lunitic and he is absent in 1891 by which time she is being supported by her spinster sister Mary Ann living at 8 8 Newton Road in Colchester. By 1901 they had both moved to 4 Queens Road in Walton East Suffolk where they were both lodging house keepers. For a Reason I am unaware of (possibly as a Missionary) she seems to have moved to live at 36 North Stand Limerick in Southern Ireland where she is recorded in the 1911 Census aged 76 born in England circs 1835 and a Methodist. She died during the 4th quarter 1919 in Limerick aged 85 in 1834 (Ref Vol 5 page 219 CLDS Film 0101607).

    (5) Jane Matilda Bartlett (1835-1837) was born on 17th Dec 1834 and baptised in the Wesleyan Chapel in North Square Dorchester on 25th Jan 1837. She was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington aged 2 years on 19th June 1837

    (6) Mary Ann Bartlett (1837-aft 1911) She would have been baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel in North Square Dorchester sometime after June 1837 when the existing register of Baptisms ends. She is aged 14 in the 1851 Census living with her family in St Giles parish in Colchester in Essex. By 1861 she had moved to live in Chelsea London working for a Draper along with her younger sister Jane. By 1871 aged 35 and still unmarried, she was working as a schoolmistress. She never married but supported her sister Susannah Field, living with her initally in Colchester after her husband went into Hospital and later at 4 Queens Rd in Walton East Suffolk where they were both working as lodging house keepers. Her sister went to Limerick in Ireland so by 1911 Mary Ann was staying with her step Sister Ellen Godbold nee Bartlett in Ipswich aged 74.

    (7) John Swyer Bartlett (1839-1843) born 1839 (GRO births Dorchester District 2nd qtr Ref 8/47) ; Buried St Georges Church Fordington aged 4 years 6 months on 14th Oct 1843

    (8) Jane Bartlett (1840-aft 1861) GRO Births 3rd qtr 1844 probably the 1st child baptised at the New Wesleyan Chapel in Durngate Street Dorchester. Moved with the family to Essex and aged 10 in the 1851 Census. She moved to London with her elder sister Mary Ann and in 1861 they were working as a servants to a Draper living in Chelsea.

    (9) John Joseph Bartlett (1844-1903) GRO births 1st qtr 1844 Ref 8/54; aged 17 a printer by trade in Colchester in 1851; He married Georgina Susan TURNER a native of Marylebone in London, at St Judes Church in Chelsea on 27th Feb 1869. Thry were living in Bedford Street St Pauls Covent Garden in London in 1871 where he worked as a printer compositor. By 1881 they were living at 8 Carlise Street in the Parish of St Annes Soho and in 1891 St Pancras Westminster. They do not appeare to have any children. John Joseph Bartlett died aged 58 at 25 Fitzroy Street and was buried at St Pancras Parish Chapel in London on 30th Oct 1903.

[Note:- Henry James BOWRING is in the 1861 Census living at Miller's Close Fordington (Dist 9) aged 51 a Cordwainer (Master employing 5 men) born at Osmington Dorset with his wife Mary aged 55 born Stouton Caundle also with a daughter Jemima Bowring aged 6 (c1855) born at Dorchester. The only suitable baptism record that I can locate is at Christchurch in West Fordington. Christchurch was a chapel of St Georges Church in East Fordington built in 1846 by Rev Henry Moule to serve the soldiers stationed at the barracks in West Fordington. The baptism was held on 29th Aug 1855  for a Jemima the daughter of a Mary MILLER a servant resident at Grove Buildings in West Fordington . I think because of later events and records that this suggests that Mary Ann, Henry's wife had Jemima outside of her marriage with a soldier from the barracks and left home for a while living under the name of Mary MILLER. Her daughter Jemima much later also had an illegitimate son baptised at Christchurch on 26th Nov 1878 whom she named Willian Henry James the son of Jemima MILLER BOWRING. The father was William HAILS a shoeing smith serving at Fordington Barracks and Jemima married him on 3rd Sep 1879 at the Dorchester Registry Office. Follow link for more information about Jemima and William Hails. Mary Ann BOWRING recorded as of West Fordington and aged 69 was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington as Christchurch had no burial ground.]

[Note:- David Ironside PITMAN (1774-1852 ) Both his military records and the 1851 Census record his birth as being in All Saints Parish Dorchester in 1774. His baptism however was held 5 years later at St Martin's Church in Wareham on 8th August 1779 when he was recorded as David Ironside the son of Thomas & Jane PITMAN. His father was probably a soujourner as I can find no other records that relate to his time there. David later became a cordwainer by trade and in 1798 enlisted as David PITMAN into the 9th Regiment of Foot where he served as a private for over 21 years; on discharge becoming a Chelsea Pensioner. From his pension record we know he was 5 feet 7 inches tall and that he was discharged in March 1819 when aged 45.

David returned to Dorset and appears to have settled in Chaldon Herring as he married Mary MORMANS (1788-1835) there 4 months later on 20th July 1819. From there they went to live in Mill Street in Fordington where Mary died aged 47 and was buried in St Georges Churchyard on 2nd July 1835. David's second marriage was to the widow Jane ORCHARD (1789-1867) at St Georges church in Fordington on 23rd May 1836. He continued his trade as a shoemaker and appears in both the 1841 (aged 60 to 64) and 1851 Census returns for the parish. The 1851 Census correctly records him as being a Chelsea Pensioner and Shoemaker by trade and aged 77 years. He died there at the age of 78 being buried under his full name of David Ironside PITMAN on 30th April 1852. His wife Jane died at the age of 78 on and was buried with him on 1st Aug 1867]
