47. Samuel SLADE of the parish of St Peters [in Dorchester] & Edith TUCKER otp were married by licence 4 Mar 1763 by me Rev. Seth Bancks Rector (their signatures) witnesses Thomas Meech and Samuel Hobbs (PR)

[Note:- Samuel SLADE (1735-1776) Gentleman was the eldest son of Samuel and Ann SLADE and baptised at Langport in Somerset on 14th January 1735. He had two younger brothers John SLADE baptised at Langport on 5th Feb 1737 and Thomas SLADE baptised at Langport 17th April 1743. Both his brothers and his mother Ann are mentioned in his Will written in 1774 as was property he owned in Langport and Crewkerne.

Edith TUCKER (1728-1815) was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 9th Sep 1728 the daughter of Daniel and Ann Tucker. She appears to have owned property in Dorchester in her own right prior to her marriage as the Municipal Records of Dorchester for the year 1780 refer to Mrs Edith Tucker being in possession of a lease in her name (now Mrs Edith Slade) dated in 1751 with the Corporation of Dorchester (page 702) for the 16th (page 496 ref C37a & 499 ref C42a) of 17 butchers shops located in the Shambles in the centre of Dorchester which were to be pulled down or exchanged for other properties. Samuel and Edith had only one daughter they named Edith SLADE (1768-1832) after her mother and she was baptised at All Saints church in Dorchester on 1st April 1768. Their daughter remained a spinster and died aged 64 being buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 12th Aug 1832. She left a Will dated 1st Oct 1821 which was proved on 10th Oct 1832

Samuel SLADE was buried at All Saints church in Dorchester on 19th April 1776 leaving a Will dated 20th Dec 1774 which was proved on 31st May 1776. Edith SLADE nee TUCKER died aged 86 and was buried at All Saints Church on 16th Jan 1815.

48. George BLANDEMOUR [BLANDAMER] otp & Elizabeth HARBIN otp were married by Banns 17 April 1763 by me Rev. Seth Bancks Rector (their marks) witnesses Thomas Paul and Samuel Hobbs (PR)
[Note:- George BLANDAMER (1717-1806) the Elder of All Saints Parish was found fit to serve in the Militia in 1758 when the listing shows that he was deaf. He married here when he was aged 46 to Elizabeth HARBIN (1741-1798) the daughter of Henry HARBIN by his wife Ann TREVIS. Elizabeth was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 21st July 1741, so she was only 22 years old. Elizabeth was buried at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 4th April 1798 and was joined by her husband on 18th Dec 1806. He seems to have prospered after marriage as he is assessed for land tax, first appearing in 1781 in All Saints Parish as being the occupant of property owned by the Rev Mr Bryer and paying each year up to 1785. He appears again in 1804 and the following year in a property now owned by T.G.Read. The family appear to have remained in the house after his death and paid the tax as entries refer to the 'late Mr George Blandemore the last return being dated in the year 1818.
The following is a listing of children known to have resulted from the marriage but between Elizabeth their 1st child and John their 2nd I think they had another son named George BLANDAMER (1765/6-1847) after his father as would have been traditional. I have not however been able to locate his baptism. Follow link for more information. We know that this George was born late 1765 or early 1766 from his age at death, but perhaps more importantly from the 1891 Census we know that his son also called George Blandamer (1809-1891) was deaf, as his grandfather had been and his son Joseph (1836-1894) was deaf, and Joseph had two deaf children Fanny born 1853 and Joseph born 1866. Joseph's brother Isaac is recorded in the 1901 census as being partially deaf and he also married a woman, Hannah Gawler who had been deaf from early childhood. I think this points to a genetic disorder called osclerosis which I believe George (1717-1806) passed through his son George (1765/6-1847) to his son George (1809-1891) and onto Joseph (1836-1894)
Other children from this marriage:- (1) Elizabeth (b.1764) Bap ASt 29th Dec 1764, she married Thomas PAUL at ASt's 31st May 1792 (2) John (1769-1780) bap ASt 24th Jan 1769 buried at St Peters Church Dorchester on 24th Dec 1780 (3)Tomazen [Tomasine] (1771-1834) bap ASt 23 May 1771 remained a spinster and buried at St Georges Church Fordington on 27th July 1834 aged 63 (4) Robert (1774-1792) bap ASt 26th Dec 1774 and buried St Peters Church Dorchester on 25 Mar 1792 (5) Ann (b.1777) bap ASt 26th Dec 1777. John MORGAN of the parish of Fordington & Dorothy SPRATT otp were married by Licence 10 July 1777 by me Rev Thomas Bryer Rector (their signatures) witnesses John Randall & Ann Spratt (PR)

[Note:- John MORGAN (c1753-1816) was Churchwarden of St Georges church in Fordington (recorded in the parish registers during the years 1782; 1788; 1797; and 1799) He is almost certainly the son of Mr John MORGAN of Fordington by his wife Jane who was buried at Stinsford on 30th May 1776. See Transcription of his Will which leaves everything to his son John. John lived with his wife Dorothy in his home parish of Fordington and they had the following 9? children baptised in St Georges Church:- (1) John bap 5th Nov 1778, it is assumed that he died an infant prior to 1781 although I have not been able to locate a burial. (2) Mary Ann bap 3rd Oct 1781 & buried at Stinsford 16th May 1795 (3) John bap 3rd Oct 1781. He married twice the first time to Sarah SAMWAYS from Mucleford on 25th Feb 1811 at St Georges church in Fordington. See marriage for more information about him. (4) Harriet bap 5th Oct 1784 (5) Elizabeth bap 12th Dec 1788 and buried unmarried at Stinsford 13th Sep 1813 aged 27 so born circa 1786 (6) William bap 12th Dec 1788 (7) Susannah bap 10th Nov 1797 and buried at Stinsford 21st April 1824 aged 33 so born circa 1791 (8) Henry bap 10th Nov 1797 - Although several children were baptised together it is clear that some were born several years earlier. (9) There is also a burial recorded at Stinsford for an "Ann daughter of John & Dorothy Morgan of Fordington" on 3rd August 1790 so they may well have had at least 9 children - John MORGAN Senior was also buried at Stinsford on 29th Feb 1816 when his age was given as being 63 followed by his widow Dorothy MORGAN nee SPRATT (1753-1834) on 1st May 1834 when she was 81. As Stinford burial registers constantly refer to members of the family as being from Fordington it seems likely that burials were in a family plot at Stinsford]

Batt was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 11 May 1749 the 8th child from the marriage of James CHAFFEY to Elizabeth BATT on the 6th Feb 1736/7 at the Parish Church in Compton Valence in Dorset. He was a witness at the wedding of Richard Foster to Elizabeth Hood at All Saints Church on 20th Jan 1769 and also a witness at the wedding of John Hewer to Ann Gibbs there on 20th Nov 1755. Batt Chaffey described as a Gentleman was chosen to serve in the Dorset Regiment of Militia in the ballot held at the Kings Arms in Dorchester on 6th May 1773 but provided a substitute called Joseph Churchill to serve in his place. He was made a Freeman of Dorchester on 21st Mar 1782. Batt along with his brother George and sister Martha were the 3 main beneficiaries and executors/executrix under their fathers Will written 16 July 1782 which is when he formally took over the role as Keeper of the County Gaol at Dorchester. He seems to have retained this role until 1793 when George Andrews became Keeper and Batt Chaffey became the Corn Inspector of the Court. According to an entry in the Salisbury and Winchester Herald issued on Monday 2nd March 1812 Batt CHAFFEY formerly of Dorchester Prison and for many years Clerk of the markets in Dorchester died on 22nd Feb 1812. Follow link for more information about his family, siblings and life prior to marriage. He was a beneficiary under his fathers Will written 16 July 1782 and joint executor with his sister Martha and brother Batt. Described as a Gentleman George appears to have worked for the Corporation and County Court as one of his tasks was the recording each week of the price of corn and submitting it to the Court. (as evidenced by the following extract from the Quarter Sessions held at Sherborne on 5th April 1785 -- "This Court doth order that the Western Treasurer of the County Stock of this County do pay unto George CHAFFEY of Dorchester in this County Gentleman the sum of One Pound and Ten Shillings as his fee for the Order of Court for making the weekly returns of the prices of Corn for the markets of the Borough of Dorchester commencing from the first day of January last past to the second day of April instant as Certified under the hamd of John James Catherwood Esq the Officer appointed agreeable to the Act of the Tenth of George the Third entitled "An Act for registering the prices at which corn is sold in the several Counties of Great Britain and the quantities exported and imported " and the same shall be allowed the said Treasurer on passing his accounts."
