School Log Book 1875-1902
Extracts transcribed by Caryl Parsons
Notes from ‘Holwell Village School 1778-1987’ by Annette Sandison:
Holwell School began in 1846 with 26 boys and 14 girls who attended on weekdays
and Sundays, and 15 boys and 8 girls who came only on Sundays. They met in a
building attached to the Rectory, taught by a master and mistress and 2 paid
monitors. The school was still going in 1870 when Foster’s Education Act
recognised the Government’s responsibility to provide schools for all children
up to the age of 13 yrs. In 1871 the then Rector, the Rev H.H. WOOD (1858-1882)
proposed the building of a new school and teacher’s residence to meet the new
requirements. The new school was a brick built building with a porch containing
a bell to summon pupils to work. Inside there was a large classroom 28’x18’ for
a ‘mixed department’ and a classroom 12’x18’ for the Infants. This last was
built instead of the teacher’s residence originally planned, and was fitted with
a gallery. [These were a series of steps or tiers holding the children’s desks.
They were introduces in the 1840s to make possible oral lessons for a large
number of children at the same time. The galleries at Holwell were removed in
1907.] Outside there were 2 playgrounds, one for the boys and one for the girls,
and 2 sheds with earth closets [the Offices]. The first head-teacher was Sarah
BARTER who had held the post previously at the Rectory School, salary £20 per
year. Sarah BARTER, aged 31, married Matthew Henry WALDEN, aged 36, on 29th
January 1880, and continued to work at the school until January 1884. She was
assisted by a paid monitor, Sarah CROMBIE, who was probably aged at least 13
yrs, and paid £12 per year. The pupil teacher/monitor system allowed boys and
girls aged 13 or over to enter a 5 year apprenticeship. Head-teachers were paid
to instruct them daily for 1 ½ hours, with 1 pupil teacher for 25 children. The
pupil teachers then competed to enter training college for a further 3 years
before becoming certificated. The new National School opened in March 1874 with
64 pupils, 33 boys and 31 girls. They paid either 1d or 2d per week. All
education became free in 1891. The Rector usually visited 2 or 3 times a week to
teach Scripture and sometimes Arithmetic. In 1902 an Education Act decreed that
the School Boards should be abolished and Local Education Authorities took over
management of schools.

The School was formally closed in July 1981 after having served the village for
107 years. It re-opened as a co-operative with a new Board of Governors
appointed by Deed of Trust. The building now [2011] functions as a
pre-school/nursery.
Holwell School Log Books: 1875-1902; 1903-1921; 1922-1944; 1945-1955 missing; 1956-1981 when the school closed. The Log Books are currently in the care of the group using the school buildings as a nursery/pre-school, and I have been given kind permission by the present Committee to work on this material. Some entries are repetitive, for example visits by the Rector, and not all will be transcribed.

Next entry:
Oct 20th 1882 - Visit without notice.
1. I find that summary and admission registers have been procured; but, although it is more than ten months since the beginning of the school year, no entries have yet been made in them.
2. In the class registers no weekly totals for boys and girls have yet been made up. There are mistakes (apparently numerous) in the weekly totals of individual children; and these, in consequence, have remained undiscovered.
3. The classes to which the children belong are not shown.
4. There are two children of the name Annie JEANS, without any mark to distinguish between them. Both were marked present this morning, but only one of them was at school.
5. The approaches to the offices [lavatories] are in a very wet condition; so that it is impossible for the children to get to them without wetting their feet.

Copy of Inspector’s Report for 1882:
The results of the Examination are on the whole fairly satisfactory. The singing needs further improvement. The Arithmetic and the Needlework of the Infants are poor. The Children show a disposition to copy from one another which requires to be firmly checked. The Registers have not been properly kept. The warming of the Schoolroom is not good.
The Registers must be kept strictly in accordance with the Official Regularations [sic]. A continued disregard of them will entail a reduction of the Grant.

Too much has been attempted for the teaching power at command, and good results in Elementary Work are consequently out of the question. As to Class Subjects, Geography is quite worthless, and the English is only just worthy of any Grant. I would suggest that the new Mistress should, for this year, devote herself to Reading, Writing and Arithmetic only, and strive to develop the intelligence of the Children. The Infant Class is backward and will require special attention.
