This index was prepared in 2008 by John Patrick. |
---|
It is an index of all the people mentioned in the Swanage Trade directories. Company names are only included if they use the name of the proprietor in the title of the company. Other companies and organisations are not included unless the name
of a person is mentioned in the directory entry and then it is indexed in the name of that person.
This index is a finding aid only and the original directory should be consulted as many entries give more information than can be included in the index. At the end of the index there is an extra list of organisations, companies and clubs etc and the positions held by the people named, but these personal names are also in the main index. Directory entries with no personal names are also indexed here.In many cases there are several entries for the same person and this is because there was a significant change in their directory entry from one year to the next or they had more than one entry per year. Some minor changes to their directory entry are absorbed into their main index entry. There are many obvious spelling and typographical errors in the directories and these have been indexed as printed in the directories. When searching for a particular name in the index and it cannot be found, it is advisable to search for alternative spellings of that name. Names marked * are those known to be wrongly spelt and there is a list of them at the end of the index. A blank space in the index means that no information was given in that part of the directory entry.Directory entries where no surname is given (ie: Madam Prunella) are indexed under "X" Names mentioned in the directory introductions are not included in the index. |
