Extracts from the Overseers Accounts for the parish of St George Fordington
1798 - 1802 transcribed by Michael Russell
Note: This is not a continuous record - only extracted pages
Overseers of the Poor Accounts - Parish officers were supposed to keep a careful account of the money that they spent ‘disbursed' on poor relief. In many cases the Overseer was very particular about detail and noted every pair of shoes, petticoat, or blanket supplied or paid for, naming the recipients as well.
Many paupers had their rent paid and some received weekly relief in money, food, medicine and fuel over many years. The overseer paid for nurses', midwives' and doctors' fees (naming the persons who offered this service and those who received it). He also paid for coffins to be made and other funeral costs.
He paid the costs of travel expenses for journeys undertaken on behalf of the parish, or for the transport of paupers in and out of the parish, and usually recorded the name of the person whose case was involved.
He made payments to unmarried mothers, wives of militia substitutes and poor strangers passing through the parish. Payments from the fathers of bastard children to the parish may also be recorded annually. References to a pauper family should be looked for in the overseers' accounts of the parish where they were legally settled, and not where they were living.
The Militia : The following extracts from the Overseers Accounts include Militia Payments. For some time there had been a fear of invasion from France and the Militia were mobilized across the country but based along the south coast. Each parish had to supply able bodied men and raise extra rates to support the war effort for as long as there was an emergency. The barracks for the Dorset Militia was based in Fordington and this led to many marriages of soldiers to locals girls both in Fordington, Dorchester and the surrounding area. In 1798 the danger of invasion from France led to an increase in the size of the Militia and reorganisation to increase its efficiency.
The Irish Rebellion of 1798 : On 22 August 1798 a force of 1,100 French soldiers landed in County Mayo to support a rebellion in Ireland by the United Irishmen. The Churchwarden accounts for Fordington show that the Dorset Militia were embarked for Ireland on 31 August 1798. They were still in transit when a decisive battle took place at Ballinamuck in County Longford and the French surrendered to become prisoners of war. Over 500 Irish were slain but another 1,000 escaped although there were reports of rebels being hanged in towns, which included Carrick on Shannon
Fortunately the diary of a James Ryan who was a land surveyor and present in Carrick in 1798 has survived and is held in the Waterford County Museum. This records that the Dorset Militia arrived on 12 th September 1798 and remained there until Michaelmas day [i.e. September 29 th ]. One of their tasks appears to have been to search Carrick for arms but they only appear to have located rusty old guns and swords. They were despatched to Fermoy and Kerrick, which are North of Cork, but were back in Carrick on Shannon by 22 nd October.
For some time there were local uprisings or disturbances but only one is recorded involving the Dorset Militia and that was at Coolnamuck where a number of prisoners had been taken. Intelligence having been received that there was going to be trouble a Mr Jephson preceded with a force of Yeomen [cavalry] assisted by the Dorset Militia to Coolnamuck and took into custody seven persons on 6 th September 1799. That night about 300 people assembled and during the ensuing disturbances another nine were taken into custody.
Things generally quietened down however and there was no longer a need for such large numbers [approx 100,000] so a lot of the Militia including the Devon and Dorset contingents returned to England in 1799. The Churchwarden accounts show that they returned to Fordington and were discharged from the Militia on 1 st November 1799

[Note original Overseer doing accounts again]
Note: Relief For Families Of Militia Men
Poor men often enrolled in the militia as substitutes in return for payment from those who were eligible for service, but who wished to avoid it. The wives and children of these militia substitutes were often left chargeable to the parish. They were eligible for payment of relief by the parish, and the parish was able to apply to the County Treasurer for reimbursement of the money that had been paid out. At this point in the Fordington Overseers Accounts a list is provided of substitutes serving with the Dorset Militia as follows
Wm BRIDLE* a Sergeant to be paid by Wm LAMBERT
John SYMES for Raymond HOLLOWAY of Watcombe
Wm BURT for Thos BROWN of Hilton
Thos BURT for Wm HAWKINS of Martinstown
Thos CHRISTOPHER for Robert HOSKINGS [HOSKINS] of Portland
Saml SYMONDS for Thos GUPPY Ashrim [Atrim?] Netherbury
Henry WHITE for John FARR of Cerne [Cerne Abbas]
Jos BISHOP Volunteer of the Holy Trinity Dorchester
William HORE for Jas FOY of St Peters Dorchester
