Wraxall is a civil parish consisting of the two hamlets Higher Wraxall and Lower Wraxall. It is situated in a valley in the chalk hills of the Dorset Downs, about 11 miles north-west of Dorchester. The origin of the name Wraxall is thought to be "a nook of land frequented by buzzards".

The small Parish Church of St. Mary is in the east of the parish at Lower Wraxall.

Higher Wraxall is set in a valley of its own up in the hills; there are a few cottages, a farm and Wraxall Manor House. This fine house was built in the early 17th century, probably by William Lawrence.
