KELLY'S DIRECTORY 1842
WAREHAM is a market town, and borough both corporate and parliamentary, having separate jurisdiction, locally in the division of South Blandford, and hundred of Winfrith; 117 miles s.w. by w. from London, and 18 e. from Dorchester; seated on a peninsula formed by the streams of the Frome and Piddle, near their conflux with the water of Poole harbour. An elegant stone bridge be-strides the Frome. The streets are spacious and airy, composed of houses in general neatly and well built; and the whole are surrounded (except on the south) by a high rampart of earth. The port of Wareham was formerly in some estimation; but, owing to the retreat of the sea and the shallowness of the shore, it has gradually become nearly choked up. The trade of the place is very inconsiderable, except in the export of pipe clay, of which vast quantities are obtained from the clay pits round the town; upwards of ten thousand tons are annually shipped at the quay (which lies south of the town) for various English ports, and thence forwarded to numerous potteries, including those of Staffordshire. In the 2nd year of Anne this town was incorporated, the style of the municipal body being “the mayor, and capital and assistant burgesses.” The corporation have a town clerk and recorder, with other officers, and the mayor for the time being is coroner of the town and of the isles of Purbeck and Brownsea. The corporation have a house of correction, and hold a court of pie-powdre and quarter sessions of the peace; a court of record is held on the first Monday of every month, for the recovery of debts under £40.; and a court baron,, under the lord of the manor, is held annually. Wareham sent two members to parliament from the time of Edward I until the reform bill restricted it to one representative; the gentleman at present sitting for the borough is John Samuel Wanley Sawbridge Erle Drax, of Charborough park, county of Dorset, Esquire.
Wareham has formerly eight churches, of which only three now remain, viz, St. Mary’s, the Holy Trinity and St. Martin’s – but it is only in the first-named that service is performed; this is a spacious lofty fabric, and one of the most ancient churches in Dorsetshire; the benefice is a vicarage. There are places of worship for Independents, Wesleyan, Methodists and Unitarians. An endowed free school and some almshouses are the chief charities. The market day is Saturday; fairs, April 18th and September 11th. Wareham borough (which includes the three parishes of the Holy Trinity, St. Mary and St. Martin, and the liberty of STOBOROUGH,) contained, in 1831, 2,325 inhabitants, and by the last census (1841) 2,652.
