CLUETT Herbert Leonard Gunner No. 1618667 309 Battery 28th Searchlight Battalion, Royal Artillery.

Birth registered at Sherborne, Dorset on 9th March 1913 son of Arthur George Cluett, a bricklayer and small holder, and his wife Bertha Mowlem.
Herbert married Alice Rose Toms at Stourpaine, Dorset on 9th March 1937 and he died at Sturminster Newton on 7th March 1944 aged 31, but I found no
Army record giving details of his death. He was buried in grave H. 11. Later Alice remarried registered at Poole, Dorset on 11th February 1946 to
Gordon Wells.


JUPE Michael Horace Aircraftman No. 1866873 2nd Class Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve

Born at Sturminster Newton in December 1924 son of Robert Horace Jupe a furniture salesman in 1911, and his wife Dorothy Mary Marsh. On 21st June
1943 the 18-year-old Michael was tasked with clearing out a paint store at RAF Ibsley, Hampshire which contained aircraft dope. The store caught fire
killing Michael, and he was buried in grave F. 13.


ROSE Albert William (K/ as William) Private No. 3/7725 3rd Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment, previously No. 385875 Labour Corps.

Born at Okeford Fitzpayne, Dorset about July 1876 son of Thomas Rose, a labourer, and his wife Amelia Howe. William married Alice Kate Douche at
Okeford Fitzpayne on 22nd December 1910, and in 1911 they were living in the village where William worked as a butter blender at a butter factory.
On 11th January 1919 he was discharged from Herne Bay Military Hospital, Sussex as no longer fit for Military Duties owing to artero-sclerosis. He
died on 6th June 1919, aged 42, and was buried in grave No. 976. His parents lived at Broad Oak, Sturminster Newton.


SHORT Frederick Corporal No. 230288 Dorset Yeomanry (Queen's Own) and labour Corps No. 639983

Born at Bagber, Dorset about April 1894 son of John Short, cemetery caretaker at Sturminster Newton, and his wife Martha Bessie Stanier. In
1911 aged 17 is boarding at Stone Allerton, Axminster, Devon working as a groom. In January 1919 he had married Mabel Ellen Heritage at Wincanton,
Somerset, and in 1921 they were staying at Cemetery Lodge with John's parents - he noted as "Unfit for Work previously a Groom". He had been
discharged from the Army on 15th April 1919 (was he wounded or been gassed?) and he died on 28th June 1921 aged 27 at Sturminster Newton, being
buried in grave No. 1023. He had been Mentioned in Dispatches during his war service (per CWGC) .


WATTS John William Farrier Corporal No. TS/ 9263 Royal Army Service Corps.

Born at Hazelbury Bryan, Dorset on 19th April 1869 son of Reuben Watts, a farm labourer and sawyer who died in 1899, and his wife Maria Durant who
died in 1894. John married Elizabeth Hallett at Lyme Regis, Dorset on 11th November 1894 whilst working there as a police constable then, after she
died in January 1912, he married Rose Kate Yeatman (a widow nee Bleathman) at Sturminster Newton on 3rd August 1914. In 1921 they were living in
Church Street, Sturminster Newton. John died at Sturminster Newton on 9th August 1921, cause not found, and was buried in grave No. 1024.
