Sturminster Union Workhouse
Hammoon, Hinton St Mary, Manston and Marnhull all lay within the Sturminster Union and any homeless persons from those parishes were sent to the Sturminster Newton Workhouse. Information on the workhouse and photographs of the existing buildings can be found on the excellent History of Workhouses site. Prior to the Act which created the Poor Law Unions, Marnhull had it's own workhouse and a list of inmates exists in the Rates Book, this will be transcribed in time.
The lists below are from the census and indicate all the residents of the workhouse that were present on census night but came from the parishes of Hammoon, Hinton St Mary, Manston or Marnhull.
