Banns can be a useful source of information as they can point to where the marriage of a person from a particular parish took place, if not in that parish, by showing the name of the parish where the future spouse lived and therefore possibly giving a lead to that line of ancestors. However, the parish of origin of some spouses is not always strictly truthful. It was a common occurrence for (usually) the groom to move into the parish of the bride for the required period before the date of the wedding, or to at least leave some belongings there, so that his residence could be given as the same parish as the bride, and thus save the expense of having the banns read in two parishes
According to a case, brought before the Bishop of Exeter – April 4th 1843 – notice must be given to the Clergyman seven days before the first publication of Banns; during which time he is to make enquiry as to the residence of the parties. Residence in a parish from and after the time of giving notice appears to be the residence required by law.
