Description from the 1895 Kellys Directory
Langton Herring is a parish and small village on the Fleet, near the sea coast, 2½ miles southeast form Portisham station on the Abbotsbury branch of the Great Western Railway, and 5½ miles north west from Weymouth. In the Western division of the county, hundred of Uggescombe. Weymouth union and county court district Dorchester petty sessional division, rural deaconry of Bridport [Abbotsbury portion], archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St Peter is a small ancient Gothic building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and low square embattled western tower, containing 2 bells: there are two stained glass windows there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1682. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent charge £65, gross income £106, net £65, including 33 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of William Sparks esq. and held since 1860 by the Rev. Clement Hammond Gosset M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in fishing. Langton Herring Manor House is the residence of William Sparks esq. D.L., J.P., M.S.A. lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is light clay; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat and some land in pasture. The area is 1202 acres of land and 300 of water and foreshore; rateable value £980; the population in 1891 was 207.
