Tudor Subsidies

The Tudor Subsidies rolls of 1526-27 are, with a few exceptions one of the first lists to give the names of Dorset inhabitants since the 14th century. The subsidies are an early form of taxation, the ones from the 1520's being raised to subsidise the war with France. Everyone from the age of 16 and over was taxed on their land, goods or wages down to a lower limit of £1.00, although in later years the tax on wages was dropped these subsidies comprise one of the very attempts to determine the individual wealth of the inhabitants of the nation. Subsidies continued to be charged throughout the Tudor period although the lower limits sometimes varied. Married women are not mentioned as their property was vested in their husbands, but spinsters and widows were included. The subsidy rolls are in the PRO in London were been transcribed by T L Stoate and those for Dorset published in 1982. This small extracts comes from his book 'Dorset Tudor Subsidies 1523-1593'.
