During this period the Top 10 most frequently occurring surnames were as follows:

Interesting that in the period from 1841 to 1901 the most numerous family names in 1841 almost disappeared from the parish by 1901 reflecting largely the decline of the agricultural labourer

Strays

Of the 1934 entries in the censuses of 1841-1901, 1767 of the entries recorded place of birth as Dorset. The remaining origins of newcomers to the area came primarily from the neighbouring counties of Somerset (102), Hampshire (18) and Devon (9). The other origins recorded were: London (6), Oxford (5), Wiltshire (4), Middlesex (3), Sussex (3), Kent, Herts, E Indies and India (2 each) and Bucks, Cornwall, Cumberland, Essex, Hereford, Lancs and Lincoln (1 each).

Of those recorded as born in Dorset, unsurprisingly the majority were from Glanvilles Wootton (813). The rest originated in many Dorset parishes but the nearby parishes of Hazelbury Bryan (54), Buckland Newton (45), Holnest (42), Holwell (42) and Pulham (35) were most numerous.
