Rev John Anderson (1797-1866) with his wife Elizabeth

Background to the Congregationalist or Independent Churches :- (1)

This nonconformist denomination began as a movement within the Church of England, founded by Robert Browne. Its followers were at first called Separatists or Brownists, but were later known as Independents, and later still as Congregationalists. They were firmly suppressed, and in 1608 Browne's followers emigrated for a time to Amsterdam to escape persecution. But some returned, and in 1620 the church provided the London contingent of the passengers of the Mayflower when she sailed for America.

During the Commonwealth, Cromwell and several of his closest associates were Independents, though the official doctrine of the established church was then Presbyterian. When the monarchy was restored, the 1662 Act of Uniformity placed legal disabilities upon the sect, as it did upon other nonconformists. Although persecution was ended under William & Mary, by the 1689 Act of Toleration, meeting places were still subject to the granting of licences by either the county justices, the bishop or the archdeacon.
Background to the Independent Church in Dorchester :-

The first Independent church or chapel in Dorchester was founded in 1662 by the Revd William Benn, the Anglican minister at Holy Trinity, Dorchester, who had been ejected from his benefice. The church adopted Presbyterian doctrines. It met at The Priory, the home of Denzil Holles (1598-1679), and continued to do so after his death in 1680. In 1719 a meeting house was built in Pease Lane [Colliton Street]. (2) I have also provided this link to an account of The Old Dissenters Meeting House Pease Lane and their Register of Baptisms from 1750-1835.

In 1776 a group split away from the Presbyterian church to form a Huntingdon Connection Methodist church, in Durngate Street, under the leadership of (1) Rev. Thomas Molland a graduate of Trevecca College which was founded by Lady Huntington on her birthday (the 24th Aug 1768) to train her Ministers. After 3 years at the college he went to Upwey but did not settle moving to Dorchester in 1775.

John Hutchins (3) informs us that the old meeting-house of the Independents or Congregationalists in Dorchester stood in 'Durn Lane' and was erected in 1776. 'Durn Lane' also called 'Durngate Lane' (and later 'Durngate Street' ) can be seen on Hutchins map of 1771 and is identified in the index by the letter "E". As can be seen 'Durn' or 'Durgate Lane' runs parallel to High East Street in the Center of Dorchester not far from All Saints Church and connected 'Cornhill' to Fordington. On the 6th Nov 1797 (4) title to a messuage (used now and for many years past as a meeting house, with its garden, formerly part of Adminston burgage in the parish of All Saints, Dorchester) was conveyed to trustees. I think that it is important to appreciate that small sects like this drew together like thinking members and they would often travel much further than normal to attend chapel. Many were businessmen and likely to attend other Independent chapels to exchange views etc. As I live in Yorkshire I do not have access to the original documents held at the Dorset History Center and these need to be studied in due course but the DHC index to the records lists the following people as being named in the conveyance - most probably as trustees as the meeting-house was being conveyed into their care. One of the conditions set down for the conveyance was that that the building should continue to be used as a meeting house by the Independent congregation of Dorchester. If the meeting house was not used, or a Minister not appointed for 12 months, then the trustees had the power to sell. Another interesting condition was that the trustees must continue to attend and subscribe to the meeting house.

Ministers of the Independent Chapel were:-
    (1) Rev. Thomas Molland (1748-1808) (Minister 1776-1783) - (Research into this family kindly supplied by Patrick Mitchell)
He was the 2nd child of that name, and fourth child from the marriage of Thomas Molland Senior to Mary nee Stribing who married at High Bickington in Devon on 30 January 1739/40. He had a brother John Molland baptised at High Bickington in 1740 but was himself baptised at Winkleigh in Devon on 1st June 1748. After 3 years of study at Trevecca College he went to Upwey in Dorset but did not settle, moving to Dorchester. In 1776 a group split away from the Presbyterian church under his leadership to form a Huntingdon Connection Methodist church, in Durngate Street. He married twice, firstly to Ann Wellstead at West Knighton on 12 February 1778 and they had a son Thomas Molland junior baptised at St Georges Church in Fordington on 5th January 1783 after which he left Dorchester being replaced by the Rev Phillip Mills. No trace has so far been found of Ann's death but the Reverend Thomas Molland, recorded as a widower, married again at Shawbury in Shropshire on 10 July 1788 to Elizabeth Reddrop a spinster of Whitchurch in that County. She appears to have been the daughter of Richard & Elizabeth Redrope, baptised at Whitchurch on 27 September 1737 and their marriage childless.

Thomas made his Will on 3rd August 1805 while living at Thaxted in Essex. He was buried at Whitchurch on 20 November 1808 aged 60. His will was proved at the PCC on 7 January 1809 by his son Thomas and his nephew John, and included legacies to his nephews and a cousin . Elizabeth died in 1816 and was also buried at Whitchurch on 31 October 1816 aged 79. Her Will was proved at PCC on 4 December1816 by a relative of hers.

Thomas Molland junior (1783-1851) who had been baptised at Fordington on 5th Jan 1783 also became an Independent Minister. He was made a residual legatee in the Will of Judith Teuxbury of East Lulworth in Dorset when she wrote her will on 13th Oct 1802 and left her entire estate to her daughter Sarah. Sarah survived her mother who was buried at East Lulworth 24 Jan 1803 and wrote her own will on 15th Feb 1803 making Thomas Molland Junior, after a series of legacies, the main beneficiary. This included leaving him her house and its contents in East Lulworth and naming him as her sole executor. He therefore took on administration of both wills. On the 3rd July 1832 he features in a case before the Court of Exchequer accused of not fulfilling one of these legacies which is featured on the OPC East Lulworth website accessed through the transcription there of Sarah's will. He was at East Lulworth when he married Sarah Fry Forster (1780-1858) on 14 April 1804 the marriage taking place in her parish church of St Andrews Holborn in London. He and his wife are recorded in the 1841 Census living at Pennywell Road in the parish of Barton Regis and Borough of Bristol. Ten years later in the 1851 Census they are still living in Bristol but in the civil parish of St Paul and Thomas Molland recorded as an Independent Minister is now aged 68 and of infirm health. He had written his will in 1845 whilst living at No.24 Wilson St in St Paul's parish leaving everything to Sarah, but it was not proved by his widow until 6th Dec 1851.

    (2) Rev. Philipp Mills (1762-1796) (Minister 1783-1793) - another graduate of Trevecca, he retained the position until 1793 when he moved to become the Minister at Lock Fields in Walworth Surrey.

[Note:- His name has been recorded variously as Philip; Phillip, Philipps; Miles, Mills but should be as shown above. ]

Philipps MILLS was born on 21st November 1762 and educated at Trevacca College being appointed Minister of the Independent Chapel in Dorchester in 1783. A position he held until he was appointed on 29th May 1793 as Minister of the Independent Chapel at Lock's Fields in Walworth which lies within the ecclesiastical in the Parish of St Marys Newington in Surrey . He married Rebecca BRIDLE . He died on 12th January 1796 being buried in the Protestant Dissenters Burial Ground in Lock's Fields on 20th January by the Revd W Stevens who spoke at the grave.

    (3) Rev. Gibbons, (Minister 1793-1796) He was a Congregationalist and the church adopted this doctrine. The Charles Surman card index of Dissenting Ministers suggests that he was still there in 1796

    (4) Rev. Stephen Joseph Underwood (Minister 1796-1801) another graduate of Trevecca said to be from Middlesex.
Note:- Stephen and his wife Mary are known to have had at least the following children (1) John who was born on 25th Oct 1788 in the parish of St Pancras, London, Middlesex (whilst they were living in Britannia Street, Bath Bridge) (2) James was born 8th Jan 1795 in the parish of St Martins in the Fields, London (whilst living in Orange Court Leicester Square) (3) Ebenezer who was baptised in Dorchester by his father on 21 Oct 1796 (4) Joseph who was born on 21st Oct 1796 in the parish of All Saints Dorchester (5) Maria Jane Willmot who was born on 6th Aug 1798 in All Saints Parish Dorchester and baptised by her father the same day. (6) Rev. Lemon Hall (1788-1863) (Minister 1813-1826) He was born at Gatesend near Fakenham Norfolk on 20th Feb 1788. He married (See IGI) to Ann Lentaff the daughter of John & Mary Lentaff at St Nicholas Church in Lynn Norfolk on 16th July 1813, shortly before moving to Dorchester. We know of eleven children born to his wife Ann in Dorchester:- (1) John Lentaff Hall born on 6th June 1814 whilst they were living in Holy Trinity Parish probably still in temporary accommodation after their arrival. He was baptised in the independent church on 31st July that year. This child appears to have been buried at All Saints (as the independent church had no burial ground of it's own) aged 4 years on 1st Sep 1818 as John Lemon Hall. (2) Lydia Hall was born after they moved to All Saints parish to live on 24th Sep 1815. She was baptised in the independent church on 9th November that year. (3) Robert Lemon Hall according to the register at Dr Williams Library was born on 21st Aug 1816 (The IGI incorrectly records birth place as Cripplegate which is where the library is!) . This registration gives maternal grandparents. He married and moved to live in Newington Surrey (4) Henry Hall born 2nd Nov 1817 was baptised in the independent church on 12th July 1818 but buried aged 11 months at All Saints on 18th Sep 1818. His wife Ann died there at the age of 37 being buried in the churchyard of the chapel on 30th Jan 1837. Lemon remarried in 1837 to Elizabeth the daughter of another nonconformist couple John and Ann Yockney who was born at Staines in Middlesex on 4th July 1793. Lemon remained at Stanwell until his death on 18th Jan 1863. Letters of Administration for his estate (under £450) were issued (with a will attached) to Samuel Hall of Eastbourne Sussex a Chemist one of his children.
NOTE:- In 1822 during the tenure of the Rev Lemon HALL a group left the church to form a Huntingdon Connexion church which met in the Lady Huntingdon Room in Grey House Yard South Street Dorchester and in 1825 at Fordington . There are 66 names on the membership roll. Nineteen baptisms took place there and these have been added to the following register from Durngate but identified as a Huntingdon Connection baptism. In 1826, following the appointment of a new minister at the Durngate Street chapel, they re-joined the Congregational church.

Note:- The following baptisms were originally taken in Nov 2010 from the IGI extraction file C074181 for "The Independent Church of Dorchester Durngate Street"; and film C074191 for the Huntingdon Connection Church; to allow cross referencing with other records on this site until a full transcription could be obtained which was completed in Aug 2013. Because it's a non conformist religion baptisms are often well after birth and where this is more than a year I have made a separate note in the index of the birth date to aid searching. It does not of course mean that they were in Dorchester at the date of birth only that it is recorded at baptism. In the original register baptisms are often not in date order but grouped by family but for ease of reference I have chosen to retain the original chronologcal order given in the IGI.

Marriages

Marriages clearly took place at the Chapel but I have no access or awareness of a marriage register.
If anybody is aware of a marriage in their family which was carried out at the Chapel I would appreciate details (my email address is on the parish page) so that we can build up a listing. The only one so far to come to light is given below:-

26 Dec 1841 - William MILLARD of full age a bachelor, a Cordwainer, resident at Saint Peters Dorchester, father Elias MILLER[D] a carpenter, was married at the Durngate Chapel of Dorchester and Cerne in the county of Dorset by Chas Thos Curtis Minister to
Mary Ann CROSS of full age, a spinster, resident at Fordington, father Thomas CROSS a bricklayer; both signed; witnesses Mary Ann Cross (her mark) and Jean HART

[Note:- William MILLARD (1819-1887) is shown in the 1841 Census just prior to his marriage as a Journeyman Shoemaker resident in Pease Lane Dorchester and born outside of the County between 1817 and 1821. He in fact originated from Westbury in Wiltshire.

Mary Ann CROSS (b.1819) was the daughter of Thomas CROSS a bricklayer (7) by trade and Sophia MACKIN (8) who had married on 23 March 1818 at Fisherton Anger in Wiltshire. Mary Ann was the eldest of ten children and born on 5th February 1819 and baptised at St Edmund's church in Salisbury Wiltshire on 21st of the same month. By 1825 Thomas and Sophia had joined the nearby Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Salisbury situated in St Edmund's Church Street (established 1759 it was rebuilt in 1810 to provide 280 free and another 780 paying seats for it's expanding congregation). As a result her siblings Elijah who had been born on 19th Dec 1820 and Sophia born 17th Dec 1824 were baptised together in the chapel on 9th January 1825 as were her later siblings. Mary Ann therefore came from a strong Non-Conformist background. She seems to have moved to live in Fordington, possibly being related to John CROSS who was already living there and a member of the Independent Chapel.

The Minister Charles Thomas CURTIS was the 5th of at least 8 children of Thomas CURTIS and Susannah SAUNDERS and born in Dorchester circa 1803 being baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 3rd April 1804. There may be a vague reference to him in the Surman Index of non-conformist Ministers and it's possible that he served at the Hope Chapel in Weymouth from 1821 to 1828. He married prior to 1835 (he had a daughter Clara then see 1861 Census) to a schoolmistress named Eliza (b.1797) a native of Taunton in Somerset and they settled in Chard Somerset where he was a employed as a Schoolmaster. The 1841 Census refers to him as Charles CURTIS a Minister and Schoolmaster. He appears not to have continued with his Ministry as he is only referred to as a schoolteacher living in Chard in the 1851 and 1861 Census returns.

After marriage William and Mary Ann had a daughter Emma Millard born at Dorchester circa 1843. She was presumably baptised at the Independent Church in Durngate St where we do not have baptisms after 1837(9). They moved almost immediately to live in Exeter Devonshire where their next child Ann Millard was born in the 2nd quarter of 1844. There next 5 children (William Millard b.4th qtr 1846, Henry Millard b.1st qtr 1848, Maria Millard b.3rd qtr 1849, Samuel Millard b. abt July 1850 and Charles Elias b. 1853) were all born at Ipswich in Suffolk where William continued to ply his trade as a journeyman boot maker. Mary Ann died and William moved prior to 1871 to live at 31 Cross Street in Islington in London where he lived with his son Samuel. They had moved to 59 Norfolk Street Islington before the next census was taken in 1881 when it shows that Samuel was now unemployed as he suffered from fits. Samuel died at the age of 32 being buried at Ishmael's Ward in Islington on 25th June 1882. William passed away on 29th November 1887 whilst living at 1 Regent Terrace Road Stamford Hill in Middlesex leaving a Will and a personal estate of £282. Probate describes him as being a boot and shoe maker and was granted to the Sole Executor John Edwin Hughes of 59 Norfolk Road in Islington a French Polisher by trade. John was the son of a neighbour of William Millard's called John Hughes, a photographer, who had been living at 61 Norfolk Road in 1881]

(8) Sophia's surname has also been spelt as MACKLIN

(9). Emma MILLARD (b.1843) I could not locate a suitable GRO registration for her birth but Emma appears living with her parents in Ipswich in the 1851 Census as their eldest child aged 8 i.e. born circa 1843. Her place of birth is only recorded as Dorsetshire Dorset but she is still in Ipswich in 1861, single and working as a servant aged 18 when her place of birth is more correctly recorded as Dorchester in Dorset.
