THE CHURCH VESTRY

Compiled from www.ancestry.co.uk file : "Dorset, England, Poor Law and Church of England Parish Records, 1511-1997" Search for Fordington St George Parish then select Churchwarden Records and then Churchwarden Accounts

The Vestry was the governing body of the parish, its name being derived from the room within the church in which it held meetings. It was made up of respected householders of the parish and elected the churchwardens and overseers of the poor as well as constables and way wardens subject to the approval of the justices of the peace. Minutes were kept of their meetings and many of those relating to Fordington have survived from 1731. The table below simply lists their meetings and identifies when churchwardens and overseers of the poor were elected but also identifies who attended the meetings.

One of the Churchwarden functions was to agree the church rates to be levied from householders for repair of the church etc. The lists are too long to transcribe so for my own purposes I have simply extracted a few names of current interest to me. The full lists are on www.ancestry.co.uk but have not been indexed so are not searchable. I have therefore included image numbers against each meeting so that records can be quickly located.
