Notes:- The IGI currently only records female baptisms - These have been checked and I have commented on any differences between their record and my transcription below which has been taken from the Bishops Transcripts which were generally submitted every 3 years. In the late 1790's there was a large influx of Militia Men to the Fordington Barracks which led to many marriages to local girls. See my comments under “Overseers Accounts 1798-1802” regarding the Militia and the rebellion of 1798. Some however brought existing wives and families to the area. The vicar has often identified Militia families by annotating entries with the phrase “from the Barracks”. There are also a few baptisms for women in Dorchester Jail. Fordington High Street was a continuation of the lower end of Dorchester and many couples married in one and raised families in the other. Where new names appeared in the Register I checked for a marriage first in Fordington and then in the surrounding area and where one was located I have added a comment as this may prove useful to researchers. We have now been asked by the CLDS to add Film Image reference numbers to transcriptions and this enables us to quickly re-locate entries which are often very difficult to read. The films can be ordered via the CLDS to view but the image references given here come from discs sent to us by the CLDS for transcription and are not on the film themselves.
