Wimborne Minster Town Criers

1867 - 1877 ? was it Joseph DAY born at Martock, Somerset in 1819 son of William, a farm carrier, and his wife Elizabeth Day. He was living at home as a farm labourer until he married Mary Ann LLOYD at Mulcheney, Somerset in 1846. In 1851 he was a toll collector at Charminster, then in 1861 and 1871 he was doing that job at Walsford, Wimborne Toll House. He died at Wimborne in March 1877.

1907 - 1920 George PEARCE born at Wimborne in 1843 son of James a gardener and his wife Hannah. Married Martha G. LEGG at Wimborne Minster in 1896. In 1881 he was serving in the Royal Artillery at Portsmouth, but from the 1891 census on he worked as a labourer or gardener. He died at Charminster in 1924.

1921 - 1931 ? George P. PEARCE born at Wimborne in 1898 son of George and Martha above. He married Elsie May FRIPP at Iwerne Minster in 1926, when he is listed as an engineer. The City Directory of 1931 lists him as Town Crier and in the pre war 1939 census he is listed as an iron foundry worker. He died at Wimborne in 1963.

1981 - 1984 Mike ANDREWS - personal details not known.

1984 - 1991 Willium CHAPMAN

Left Wimborne for Newent, Glos. in 1991 where he was a popular Town Crier until he died there in 2007.

1991 - 1998 Mike ANDREWS re-appointed before he then moved to Town Crier at Ferndown.

Wimborne Minster Bill Posters

1891 - 1911 George BARNS born at Christchurch in July 1850 son of John and Ann Barns. Married Sarah Augusta Hall at Hampreston in February 1880, and in 1880/81 was working as a bailiff for the County Court. The census returns from 1891 to 1911 confirm he was then a Bill Poster, but he died at Wimborne in April 1916.

1891 - 1895 Walter J CUSTARD born at Wimborne in April 1859, son of Thomas a cabinet maker and his wife Sophia. Married Annie Bacon at Leigh in February 1881 when he too was working as a cabinet maker. The census of 1891 and the City and County Directory of 1895 have him listed as Bill Poster. By 1901 they had moved to Winton where he resumed cabinet making, and he died there in 1928.
