Monumental Inscriptions

Sacred to the memory of the Rev CHARLES BOWLE, for 40 years one of the ministers of this parish, died 25th Jan, 1841, aged 71 years.

Sacred to the memory of GEORGE MONTAGUE SEARES, M.D. who died April the 12th, 1817, aged 54.

Sacred to the memory of JOHN ROLLES of this town, gent, who died Nov 19th, 1778, aged 83 years; of MARY his wife, who died 10th May, 1780, aged 78 years; and MARY their daughter, who died Nov 17, 1748, aged 20 years.

To the memory of JOHN FRYER, of this town, gent, who died 29 Sept, 1810, aged 86 years; of ANN his wife, daughter of the above named JOHN and MARY ROLLES, who died 31st Oct, 1812, aged 82 years; and two of their sons, JOHN and THOMAS, who died infants; of HENRY their son, who died 16th May 1819, aged 54; and JANE their daughter, who died 11th August, 1827, aged 70; also of MARY FRYER, another daughter, who died August 17th, 1853, aged 86 years.

JAMES LOVELL, esq, a native of this town, died April 25th, 1814, aged 98 years.

Here lieth the body of JOHN, the son of JOHN and ELIZABETH EDWARDS, who died August the 11th, 1721, aged 3 years 9 months and 24 days. ELIZABETH, the wife of JOHN EDWARDS, junior, died the 9th January 1728, aged 39 years.

Sacred to the memory of WILLIAM GEORGE HAWTREY BANKES, V.C. cornet 7th Hussars, the 5th son of the late Right Honble. GEORGE BANKES, MP of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy, county of Dorset. He fell mortally wounded whilst charging a body of rebels near Lucknow on the 19th March, and died on the 6th April, 1858, aged 21 years. This tablet is erected by his brother officers as a token of personal regard and esteem.

Sacred to the memory of ISAAC GULLIVER of Long Critchell in this county, who died Nov 3, 1798, aged 24 years, and of EDWARD WAGG, only son of GEORGE WAGG of Burton, in the county of Hants, esq. who married ANN, daughter of the above JOHN GULLIVER, esq. Who died the 7th March, 1799, aged 24 years.

Memories of Mrs ELIZABETH REEKS, who lies interred in the family vault in this church. Died April 13, 1802, aged 37 years.

In memory of ELIZABETH, wife of JOHN LOADER of this town, who died Nov 5, 1777, aged 58 years; of the above Mr JOHN LOADER, who died April 17th, 1804, aged 95 years; and of ELIZABETH WHITE their only child, who died February 11th, 1823, aged 57 years.

In memory of ELIZABETH SNODGRASS, who died at Wimborne the 9th day of November, 1836, aged 64. Her mortal remains are laid in the ground on the west of end of this minster.

To the memory of MARGARET, widow of JOHN FORD, M.D. F.L.S. who died June 20, 1819, aged 67.

In memory of Mr ANTHONY SARGEANT, one of the Governors of Queen Elizabeth’s Free Grammar School in this town. He died on the 18th Nov, 1829, aged 80 years; of MARY his wife, who died Sept 8, 1803, aged 60 years; of JANE their daughter, wife of S R NEWELL, captain of his Majesty’s 4th Regiment of Foot, who died April 20, 1811, aged 35 years; of SOPHIA, who died unmarried, April 17, 1822, aged 35 years; and of JAMES, their eldest son, who died Oct 27, 1824, aged 55 years; of MARY SUTTON, widow, their daughter, who died Oct 11, 1840, aged 67 years; and of WILLIAM-ANTHONY, their son, who died at Hemel Hempstead, Herts, Dec 3, 1849, aged 70 years.

In a vault near this place are deposited the remains of JOHN BAYLES WARDELL of Arne, in the county of Dorset, who departed this life April 15, 1810, aged 8 years.

Sacred to the memory of GEORGE LECKIE, esq of London, who died here on Saturday 26th, 1812, aged 52 years, most deeply lamented by all who knew him.

In memory of Mr RICHARD LOVELL, of the Lovells, near Diss in Norfolk, who died Nov 10, 1773.

Also SARAH, wife of Mr RICHARD LOVELL, who died June 8th, 1773.

The above window was presented in this church by THOMAS BARNABAS HANHAM of Manston, in this county, youngest son of Sir JAMES HANHAM, Bart. of Deans Court. In memory of his father and brother, whose bodies lie in this aisle. Also of his first wife, interred at Chettle, Dorset.

Sir JAMES HANHAM, Bart. born 10th March, 1760, died 2nd April, 1849.

JAMES HANHAM, born 25th July, 1820, died 7th Oct, 1838.

EMILY-ANNE HANHAM, born 31st March, 1824, died 3rd Oct, 1853.

 

BRASS PLATES:

In memory of HENRY HILL of the H.E.I.C. Maritime Service, who died July the 28th, 1847, aged 66 years. Also HENRY-EDWARD HILL, solicitor, son of the above HENRY and HARRIET his wife. He died Feb 9th 1845, aged 28 years. Also FANNY, widow of the above HENRY-EDWARD. She died Sept 19th, 1855, aged 34 years. This window is erected by HARRIET, widow of the above HENRY and mother of the above HENRY-EDWARD, in memory of their worth and of her unceasing affection, 1858.

This window was given by EDWARD LEWER of Merley, one of the church committee, to commemorate the restoration and re-opening of this Minster on St Michael’s day, 1857.

Given in remembrance of his earliest education under a vicar of this minster by JAMES, Earl of Malmesbury, Sect. Of State to H M Victoria 1858.

This window is dedicated by ELIZA-FRANCES GREATHED to the honor and glory of God.  In memory of her beloved husband HERVEY-HARRIS GREATHED, born 31st August, 1817. Died 19th September, 1857, whilst serving his country as Political Agent with the Army before Delhi.

This west window is inserted to the memory of EMILY-LUCY, wife of GEORGE TROYTE BULLOCK, esq of North Coker, Co Somerset, and eldest and beloved daughter of HENRY-WILLIAM-BERKELEY PORTMAN esq and HARRIET-EMILY his wife, by her bereaved parents and other relatives and friends. She died at Geneva, 8th November, 1856 aged 19 years.
