‘Mr Alfred G. Ayles, son of Mr Henry AYLES, was born at Sturminster Marshall. He was appointed in 1878 Head Master of ? Warehousemen and Clerks Schools at Russell Hill. He resigned in 1896. In 1908 his portrait was painted and hung in the Governors Room. This reproduction was issued with The Drapers record 12 Sept 1908. Died 1916.’ James CROSS

Illustration of a memorial to Alfred STEVENS, born at Blandford Forum 30th December 1817. Died 1st May 1875. Handwritten note by James CROSS: The greatest of English sculptors. The Wellington Memorial in St Paul’s Cathedral is his work.
Reprint of information written by J. CROSS for Somerset and Dorset notes and Queries, May 1919 concerning Thomas MERKES, vicar of Sturminster Marsall, and picture. 14th century.
On board, black and white illustration of memorial brass: ‘The vycare some time of this towne a friend and father of ye poore And founder of Baylye howse bye death to lyffeys gone before So heare not dead but layd to sleepe he Henrye HELME his corps doth rest Gods word ys true let no man doubt, the faythfull are for ever blest Of hys decease recorded heare Behold ye may the day and yeare 16 ?Maii Ao Dni 1581.’ The effigy is shown with moustache and double pointed beard, habited in long gown, turned out with fur, his hands raised and joined in prayer. The Dorset Natural History and Antiquarian Field Club lent the block for reproduction here. There is another Brass in Old English Characters about the year 1500: ‘Here lyeth Wyllya BENETT on Wosle Sowle gode have merci.’ Among the eleven persons of Sturminster Marshal fined in connection with Perkin Warbecks rebellion in 1497 is William BENET lxs.
