The following are transcriptions of documents relating to the 1849 Removal & Settlement of Sarah Courtney from the Parish of Cerne Abbas to the Parish of Stratton.

Dorset To Wit  -  The complaint of James Bragg one of the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Cerne Abbas in the said County of Dorset made on behalf of the ChurchWardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Cerne Abbas and with their assent, unto us the undersigned, two of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said County at Cerne Abbas in the said County, this 30th Day of April in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty nine who saith: That Sarah Courtney has lately come to inhabit and is now inhabiting in the said Parish endeavouring to settle there contrary to Law, not having resided in the said Parish  for Five Years next before the Application and Complaint, and not having gained a legal Settlement there, nor having produced any Certificate acknowledging her to be settled elsewhere, and that on the 14th Day of March in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty nine the said Sarah Courtney became chargeable to, and from thence hitherto has been relieved by, and is now receiving Relief from the said Parish of Cerne Abbas. The said James Bragg therefore prays that the said Sarah Courtney may be duly examined as to the place of her legal Settlement, and further dealt with according to Law.

Parish of Cerne Abbas in the County of Dorset.
As to the Removal of Sarah Courtney.

To the ChurchWardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Stratton in the County of Dorset.

Take notice, That the above named Sarah Courtney now residing in this Parish has become chargeable to the said Parish of Cerne Abbas and is now receiving Relief from the said Parish, and that an Order of Justices has been obtained for her Removal to your Parish of Stratton as her last place of legal Settlement ( a duplicate of which Order, and a statement in writing of the grounds of such removal as well as the particulars of full ----?---- on which the same was made, are herein sent). And take notice, That unless Notice of Appeal against the said Order be received by us within Twenty-one Days from the sending hereof, the said Pauper, will be removed to your said Parish of Stratton in pursuance of the said Order. Dated this 14th Day of May in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty nine.

Removal Order 1849  -  Sarah Courtney

To the ChurchWardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Cerne Abbas in the County of Dorset and to the ChurchWardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Stratton in the County of Dorset and to each and every of them.

Dorset to wit – Whereas Complaint hath been made unto us, whose Names are hereby set and Seals affixed, being Two of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said County of Dorset (one whereof being of the Quorum) by the ChurchWardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Cerne Abbas That Sarah Courtney has come to inhabit, and is now inhabiting in the said Parish of Cerne Abbas not having resided in the said Parish for Five Years next before the Application of this Warrant, and not having gained a legal Settlement there, nor having produced any Certificate acknowledging her to be settled elsewhere, and that she is now actually chargeable to the same Parish and now receiving Relief therefrom; and that the Parish of Stratton is the place of her legal Settlement: We, the said Justices, upon due proof thereof as well by Examination of Witnesses, to wit, of Sarah Courtney and William Cave upon Oath, as otherwise, and upon due consideration of the Premises, do adjudge the same to be true, and that the Place of the last legal Settlement of the said Sarah Courtney is in the said Parish of Stratton in the said County of Dorset. These are therefore, in Her Majesty’s name, to require and Order that if with Twenty-one Days after you, the said ChurchWardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Cerne Abbas shall have sent, by post or otherwise, unto the ChurchWardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Stratton,  a Notice in Writing of the said Sarah Courtney being so chargeable as aforesaid, together with a Copy or Counterpart of this Order, and a Statement in Writing of the Grounds of Removal as well as the particulars of the Settlement on which this Order is made, no Notice of Appeal against this Order shall be given by the ChurchWardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Stratton, or if Notice of Appeal shall be given within Twenty-one Days aforesaid, then forthwith after this time for prosecuting such Appeal shall have expired (if the same be not duly prosecuted), or in case the same ChurchWardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Cerne Abbas or some or one of you, or some proper person or persons to be employed by you, do remove and convey the said Sarah Courtney from and out of your said Parish of Cerne Abbas to the said Parish of Stratton and her deliver, together with this our Order or a Duplicate or true Copy thereof, unto the Overseers of the Poor there, or one of them, who are hereby required to receive and provide for her according to Law.

Given under our Hands and Seals, at Cerne Abbas in the said County of Dorset, the 30th Day of April in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty nine.
