Sherborne Town Criers

1851 - 1865 William SIMMONDS born at Sherborne in December 1798 son of William and Jane Simmonds. Married Ann Biggs at Sherborne in April 1825, and described as a post boy and ostler in the baptism records for their children. Ann died in May 1840, and in the 1841 census William is a shoemaker, then the Town Crier in 1851 and 1861. He died at Sherborne in November 1865, and was the Uncle of his successor Robert Simmonds below.

1870 - 1901 Robert SIMMONDS born at Sherborne 1843 son of Robert a wheelwright and Hannah Simmonds. Married Sarah Ann TETT at Sherborne in 1863, and listed as a mason's labourer on the 1861 census, then as a factory hand on baptism records in 1866 and 1868, but then Town Crier in October 1870. Sarah died in 1892 he married Eliza POLLARD in 1893. Continued as Town Crier until he died at Sherborne in January 1902. He was the nephew of William Simmonds above.

1903 - 1904 Enos DENNIS born at East Orchard, Dorset in 1841 son of James a farm labourer and Charlotte Dennis. Married Sophia Ann PERCY at Sherborne in 1868 when he was a police constable, then worked as a gardener and game keeper. In 1902 he married Sarah E HANBURY, was briefly the Town Crier but died at Sherborne in October 1905.

1907 - 1915 Alexander TUTT born at Winfield, Sussex in 1856 son of George a miller and corn dealer and his wife Ann. Married Sarah L COOPER at Haydon, Dorset in 1889 and worked as a corn dealer, then a licensed victualler before becoming the Town Crier in 1907. He died at Sherborne in 1948 aged 92.
