Admons of Dorset Naval Personnel

Transcribed and donated to the Dorset OPC Project by Kim Parker

Kim Parker’s Notes:
While transcribing George FRY's list of Dorset PCC Grants of Administration (Admons), I was struck by the high proportion related to young men serving in the Navy from 1690 onwards. What happened? On July 10th, 1690, at the Battle of Beachy Head or, as the French would have it, Bévéziers, France inflicted a crushing defeat on the Anglo-Dutch fleet, which lost an estimated 11 ships and control of the English Channel. It was this humiliation that prompted the government to heavily invest in the Navy, creating the Bank of England in 1694 (along the lines proposed by the Scot, Sir William Paterson, in 1691) to finance it, fostering demand that would lead to the industrial revolution. A further consequence was that another great Scottish project - the creation of Great Britain through the union of England & Scotland, first mooted by King James VI of Scotland and I of England in 1603, finally came to fruition on May 1st, 1707. Now the pieces were in place for the country to become a global power.

The high incidence of Dorset PCC Admons related to Naval personnel prompted me to research Admons issued by Dorset jurisdictions in the same timeframe. They can be difficult to discover: most Admons are catalogued under the home parish of the deceased and any reference to the Navy might be buried in the Oath of Administration (where it survives) or confined to a note in the margin. I concentrated on the Archdeaconry of Dorset (including those Admons pertaining to the Archdeaconry of Dorset granted by the Bristol Consistory Court), the Peculiar of Corfe Castle and, to a lesser extent, the Peculiar of Poole & Canford, covering roughly 90% of Dorset's parishes. My focus was Admons, but when I came across Wills, I included them.  Since the Navy also made use of Privateers as support vessels, I included mariners who served aboard those too.

There are surely more Admons of Dorset Naval personnel yet to be discovered, but the records listed here bear witness to some of the most dramatic events in British history. 1707 was a particularly bad year. What happened? On October 22nd, 1707 the British Fleet, returning home to Portsmouth after engagements in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), hit bad weather off of the coast of the Scilly Isles and four ships went down - HMS "Association", HMS "Eagle", HMS "Romney" and HMS "Firebrand" - with the loss of all onboard, estimated at between 1,400 to 2,000 men. How terrible for Sarah BARRY, widow of Weymouth & Melcombe Regis, who lost her son, William BARRY, and a brother, Benjamin WILLSON, on board HMS "Romney" and would later lose another brother, Symon WILLSON, on board HMS "Montague" in 1710. The cause of the disaster - one of the worst in British maritime history - was the navigators' inability to accurately calculate their location. This lead to remarkable discoveries and the invention of implements to calculate longitude and latitude that became used the world over.

More Dorset lives were lost in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48) and the Seven Years War (1756-1763). Spare a thought for Esther (Hester) MUDFORD, who lost two sons in two years in 1742 and 1744; to William MANSFIELD, who lost two sons on board HMS "Dover" in 1747 and Edith MILLER of Burton Bradstock, who lost first her husband in 1743 on board HMS "Nassau" and then a son in 1757 on board HMS "Prince Edward". And poor Peter CAMELL of Swanage, who must have been so relieved when he discovered his brother Martin had not died on board HMS "Dragon" as initially thought, only to lose him for real three years later in 1745 on board HMS "Rochester" and have to grieve and go through the business of organising the administration of his estate a second time.

Please note that handwriting and idiosyncratic spelling is often difficult to interpret, so researchers should use this transcript as a guide only and consult the originals whenever possible.
