A common practice of the time was to preserve cowpox from a cowpox lesion on a cow. This was in the form of dried cowpox infection on a silk thread. This thread was then cut into short lengths. A length of thread was inserted under the skin of the arm of the child, andthe insertion bound up. The child would develop a cowpox lesion. Recovery from this usually mild illness would lead to resistance to smallpox. Benjamin JESTY, of Yetminster, is believed to have been the first person to use vaccination against smallpox by cowpox in 1774.]
