Donated by Brenda Todd

John Carter was born in 1788 in Hazelbury Bryan. His parents were Richard and Elizabeth Carter. He married Sarah Chaffy (born about 1791) on 24th January 1814 in Hazelbury Bryan.
In the 1841 census they were living in Hazelbury Bryan with their children – Joseph (born 1826), Mary (born 1829) and Elizabeth (born 1833). John was an agricultural labourer.
Sarah died in 1848.
In 1851 Sarah, another daughter (born 1823), was living with her father as head of the household. Also listed are four of John’s grandchildren – Emily and Sidney (twins), Edward and Jane. They were all Sarah’s (who had been a servant) illegitimate children. Mary Carter was a servant in Hazelbury Bryan.
In the 1861 census John Carter was listed as a lodger with his daughter, Sarah who was now the head of the household. Sarah had during the past 10 years had two more illegitimate children – Thomas and Susan. All of her children were born in Hazelbury Bryan. Mary Carter was back in the house and was also listed as a lodger: she was with her two illegitimate children – Julia Mary (who married Henry Robbins) – baptised in 1851 and Fanny, baptised in 1861.
Mary married John Alfred Pavitt in the June quarter of 1867.
John Carter died in 1870 in Hazelbury Bryan.
In the 1871 census Mary and Alfred Pavitt (a cordwainer – shoemaker) were still in Hazelbury Bryan and 10 year old Fanny, a scholar, was with them and had now taken the surname of Pavitt. Fanny reverted to the surname of Carter and married Herbert Robbins in 1878. So the two sisters, Julia Mary and Fanny, married the two brothers Henry and Herbert.
