CORSCOMBE, a village about 3 miles north-east from Beaminster. The church, St. Mary, is a truly venerable edifice, being erected in the time of Henry VII. Living a rectory. There is a school supported principally by the rector. The parish which is noted for a fine spring of water, comprises, with the hamlets of Benville and penny’s Toller, 5000 acres, and had in 1841, 810 inhabitants.

CORSCOMBE, with the hamlets of Benville and Penny Toller, is a large parish, 3 miles north-east from Beaminster, and 8 miles south-west from Yeovil, in the hundred and union of Beaminster and diocese of Salisbury. The living is a rectory, value. £590, with 62 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Rev. Thomas Boys Ferris, M.A., who is the present rector. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, a very ancient structure in the Tudor style, with Gothic tower, was built in the reign of Henry VII, and contains six bells. There is a school supported by the minister, and an endowment of £10 per annum, the gift of the late Dr. Troyte. In the neighbourhood is a spring which supplies the whole of the parish. There are two fairs held here in the year, on the 18th of May and the 7th of September. In 1851 the population was 772; the acreage, 5,000. Arthur Henry Dyke Troyte, Esq., of Huntsham Court, is lord of the manor, and owns a large portion of the parish. Cuthred the 1st, of Wessex, gave Corscomb to Sherborne in 754. Bricks and Tiles are made here.
Benville is 1 1/2 mile south-east; Rookery, 2 miles south-east; Farmers End, half a mile north; Loveland, half a mile north; Weston, half a mile north-west; Ford, quarter of a mile south; Catsley, half a mile south; Urles and Hoarstone, 1 mile south; Toller Down, 1 1/2 miles south; Pinnys or Penny Toller, 2 1/2 miles south. Merryland is a farm.

The church (St. Mary) is in the Tudor style of architecture, with Gothic tower, and contains six bells. There is a day school, with an endowment of £10 per annum, the gift of the late Dr. Troyte. CORSCOMBE (with the hamlets of Benville and Penny Toller) is a large parish, in the petty sessional division and county court district of Bridport, hundred and union of Beaminster, diocese of Salisbury, archdeaconry of Dorset, and rural deanery of Bridport, 3 miles north-east from Beaminster, and 8 miles south-west from Yeovil. The church of St. Mary, an ancient structure, was, together with the tower, rebuilt in the fifteenth century; it was again rebuilt and refitted in 1746 in barbarous taste, with the exception of the north porch, a very interesting feature, which was happily left intact. The church is now about to be restored and enlarged; it has a good peal of bells. The register dates from the year 1595; part is not legible. The living is a rectory, value £590, with 62 acres of glebe land and residence, in the gift of the Rev. William Locock, and C.J.T. Burt, esq., and held by the Rev. William Locook, B.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. There is a National school under Government inspection, to which a benefaction of £10 per annum, the gift of the late Dr. Troyte, is at present paid. Two fairs are held here in the year, on the 18th of May and the 7th of September. George Bullock, esq., is lord of the manor, and owns a large portion of the parish. The other landowners are Thomas Bishop, esq., the Earl of Sandwich and William Pope, esq. The soil varies, and the land is principally dairy land. The area is 5,003 acres; gross estimated rental £6,048; rateable value, £5,184; the population in 1871 was 755.

 

Benville is 1 1/2 mile south-east; Pinnys or Toller Whelme, 2 1/2 miles south.

CORSCOMBE, a a large parish, 5 miles south-west from Sutton Bingham station, on the main line of the London and south western railway, and 5 west from Evershot station on the Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway, 4 north-east from Beaminster, 8 south west from Yeovil and 10 north from Bridport, in the Western division of the county, hundred and union of Beaminster, petty sessional division of Bridport, county court district of Crewkerne, rural deanery of Bridport (Beaminster portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. A small branch of the river Yeo, rising in the parish near Benville, flows north and another stream, a tributary of the river Frome, flows south-east. The church of St. Mary. Rebuilt in the 15th century, and again rebuilt and refitted with the exception of the north porch, in 1746, was restored and enlarge in 1876 mainly at the expense of George Troyte-Chafyn-grove esq. And now consists of chancel, nave of five bays, south aisle, north porch, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: the carved pulpit of Caen stone and marble was given by the late George Bullock esq. In 1883: as a memorial to his wife, who died in 1866: the stained east window was placed to the memory of Edward Berkeley Troyte LL.D. and the west window is also stained: there are 226 sittings. The register dates from the year 1595; part of it is not legible. The living is a rectory, net income £400, with 56 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of F.R. Cope esq. Of Loughgall, Armagh, and held since 1914 by the Rev. Arthur Noel Coopland Storrs B.A. of Queens’ College, Cambridge. There is a charity of £8 8s left by Dr. Troyte for educational purposes. Col. Cecil John Troyte-Bullock is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is various: subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are oats, barley, wheat and roots, but the land is principally used for dairy purposes. The area is 5,008 acres; rateable value, £4,499; the population in 1911 was 437 in the civil parish, including 44 in Toller Whelme and 393 in the ecclesiastical parish.

TOLLER WHELME is an ecclesiastical parish, formed August 1, 1871, from Corscombe, from which it is 2 ½ miles south. The church of St. John, erected in 1870, at the expense of the late William Pope esq. Is a small edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel and nave and an embattled western tower, containing 4 small bells: the east and two other windows are stained, and there are sittings for about 60 persons. The register dates from the year 1871. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £38, in the gift of the trustees of the late Rev. W. J.P. Pope, and held since 1914 by the rev. Richard Thomas parker B.A. of St Mary Hall, Oxford, who is also vicar of and resides at Hook. Population in 1911, 44.
