The church of St John the Baptist is situated on the hillside. A church has existed here from the beginning of the 13th century, part of the north chancel wall dates from this period. The wrought iron gates which were made in memory of Captain Hugh Stapleton can be seen.

View up the nave to the chancel, the chancel is built out of true with the rest of the building and inclines to the south.

The octagonal font on a square base has carved quatrefoils on the sides. It is thought to be the work of John de Barwe from about 1321-1331

One of the Victorian stained glass windows

The south porch dates from the 13th century and due to subsidence has a 20% slope. The statuette in the niche outside is believed to be St John the Baptist, but it was much damaged by Puritans

In the north side of the chancel is the recumbent effigy of
Alexander Mowbray of Yorkshire who died here in 1410

Strangely, these paintings which may be medieval
and from a much larger screen, are not mentioned
in the small church guide. There are two sets on the
tower walls.

Just below the church is the school, which is now a private dwelling.

An additional burial ground is situated over the lane and behind the old school.

The view down the village from the church, with Vale of Blackmore in the distance. The right hand picture shows the Stapleton Arms inn.
