Post Office Directory of Dorsetshire & Wiltshire 1849

 BROAD WINSOR or WINSOR, with the hamlets of LITTLE WINSOR, DRIMPTON, BLACKDOWN, BIRDSMORE GATE, and DIBBERFORD, is a parish and Liberty, distant 3 miles from Beaminster north-west, 9 miles north-east from Axminster,  1 north-east from Lyme Regis, and 6 miles from Crewkerne south, in the diocese of Salisbury and Beaminster Union. The living is a vicarage, value £750, with 7 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Bishop of Salisbury; the Rev. Solomon Caesar MALAN, M.A., is the present incumbent; the Rev. John Deane HILTON, curate.  The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is an ancient structure in the Gothic style, with square tower, 5 bells, and clock.  There is a large and  commodious Free school, also chapels fro Dissenters with school attached.  At BLACKDOWN there is a new church, built in the Gothic style.  There are charities of the annual value of £35.  A very extensive trade is carried on here in sail cloth.  In 1841, the population was 1680; the acreage, 5,799.  William PINNEY, Esq., M.P., and William TREVELYAN COX, Esq., are lords of the manor.  LEWESDON and PILLESDON hills are seamarks, under the name of the Cow and Calf.
